But the nuclear plant’s disclosure implies that Kim is eager to cement his country’s status as a nuclear power and has no intentions of placing his bomb program on a negotiating table. After visiting the site on Wednesday, Kim said he and other top officials “confirmed the order of priority for implementing the ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate,” …

For the first time, scientists in the Tarheel State have documented the presence of Prionus imbricornus eating blueberry bushes. This longhorn beetle and its larvae can chomp their way through the state’s valuable blueberry fields. The findings are described in a study published this week in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management.  Blueberries are native to North Carolina, but were not cultivated until 1935. The state is the sixth largest blueberry producer in the United States, and the blueberry industry is valued at roughly $70 million. Protecting the plants from pests is crucial, as blueberries are considered one of North Carolina’s most valuable and desirable crops.  Several species including the blueberry maggot (Rhagoletis mendax), plum …

North London woman asked council for help when family kicked her out – they put her in male hostel

A North London council has been criticised for failing to help a young woman who had been made homeless following a family dispute. At one stage the woman was housed in a male-only hostel where she claimed she was “unable to secure the door for several days”, according to an Ombudsman report. The woman – referred to in the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) report as Miss B – complained about the way Brent Council dealt with her case when she presented as homeless in September 2024. An investigation into the case by the Ombudsman found the local authority “did not deal with her application properly”, causing Miss B “distress and uncertainty”. Miss B, who has health problems, complained that the council failed to ensure the emergency accommodation provided was suitable and ignored her when she said the hostel was inappropriate. The LGO suggested that it could be argued the male-only hostel “was not suitable for a potentially vulnerable young woman”. North Korean POWs: Political pawns in Russia’s war on Ukraine? | Kim Jong Un

101 East investigates the plight of two North Korean POWs in Ukraine and the campaign to transfer them to South Korea. In January 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced to the world the capture of two North Korean soldiers. It was the first hard evidence that Kim Jong Un had secretly deployed some 15,000 special forces troops to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine in exchange for billions of dollars worth of military technology and cash for Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme. But posting the POWs’ images online and opening their prison doors to media caused alarm, with international human rights organisations arguing that such exposure breaches the Geneva Convention and puts the soldiers and their families in North Korea in grave danger. As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues, 101 East investigates whether North Korean POWs are being used as political pawns and the challenges of bringing them to safety in South Korea.
