Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo cemented his place Saturday as the winningest athlete in the history of the winter Games, claiming an unprecedented sixth straight gold medal in Italy — this time in the 50-kilometer marathon. Going into Saturday’s event, Klæbo’s five medals at this Olympics left him tied with American speedskater Eric Heiden for the most golds in a single Games. With 11 golds in his career after Saturday, Klæbo now trails only American swimmer Michael Phelps for overall Olympic titles — though he still has some work to do to catch up with Phelps’ 23 victories. In Saturday’s race, Klæbo used his trademark …

Epstein Allegations, Drugs, and Sex-Crimes Trial Plague Norway’s Royal Family

Epstein Allegations, Drugs, and Sex-Crimes Trial Plague Norway’s Royal Family

In Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy wrote that “each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Yet somehow it feels like even the titan of Russian literature might find the Norwegian royal family too problematic for his liking. Two of its high-profile members—Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of the Norwegian heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, and her 29-year-old son, Marius Borg Høiby—are currently weathering two separate, spectacular scandals whose fronts have collided into each other to create a disastrous storm that seems like it may blow down the House of Glücksburg altogether. Let’s begin with the latter. On February 3, a highly publicized trial began for Høiby in Oslo. Høiby faces 38 counts, including four counts of rape, as well as domestic abuse and assault charges, which he denies. He did, however, plead guilty to lesser charges including transporting drugs and violating a restraining order. In court, he spoke of being followed by the press since he was a young child and his lack of personal identity outside of his family. “I am …

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit Claims She Didn’t Know About “the Seriousness” of Epstein’s Crimes—but the Emails Say She Googled Him

When the Department of Justice released a new series of Jeffrey Epstein files last week, royal watchers were initially drawn to the revelations about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his appearance in photographs from the late sex criminal’s collection. But now, Epstein’s link to another set of European royals is causing controversy. On Monday, Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit released an apology after a series of emails revealed the extent of her communication and travel with Epstein. Mette-Marit, whose husband Crown Prince Haakon is heir apparent to the country’s constitutional monarchy, apologized for the emails and expressed concern for Epstein’s victims. “I must take responsibility for not having investigated Epstein’s background more thoroughly, and for not realizing sooner what kind of person he was. I deeply regret this, and it is a responsibility I must bear. I showed poor judgment and regret having had any contact with Epstein at all. It is simply embarrassing,” she said in a statement. “I wish to express my deep sympathy and solidarity with the victims of the abuse committed by Jeffrey Epstein.” …

‘We had Norway’s glacial lakes to ourselves’: readers’ favourite breaks in Scandinavia and Finland | Scandinavia holidays

‘We had Norway’s glacial lakes to ourselves’: readers’ favourite breaks in Scandinavia and Finland | Scandinavia holidays

Glorious summer hiking in Norway A week’s hiking in Jotunheimen national park (230 miles north of Oslo) last summer brought me tranquillity and peace. During four days of challenging hiking and wild camping through the area we saw hardly anyone else, having entire lush green valleys and still glacial lakes to ourselves. We were fortunate to have stunning weather throughout and, despite it being July, still had a reasonable amount of snow to traverse. Norway has a fantastic network of signposted trails and huts which can be found on the Norwegian Trekking Association website.Ben An arty cabin break near Aarhus The Kunstmuseum’s walkway. Photograph: Wirestock/Alamy We had an amazing family holiday on the Jutland coast neat Aarhus, Denmark’s second city. We stayed in a cabin among pine trees and swam every day. We found helpful swimming jetties, making it simple to get into the sea – they even have hooks for towels. The beaches were wild and so quiet we often had them to ourselves. For an urban fix, Aarhus was a joy to visit. …

Son of Norway’s Crown Prince Has Narcotics Charges Added to Sexual Assault Trial

Son of Norway’s Crown Prince Has Narcotics Charges Added to Sexual Assault Trial

In less than two weeks, Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, will head to court to face charges including the alleged sexual assault of four different women. Initially indicted in August by the Norwegian Public Prosecutor’s Office for 32 offenses, this week that agency has added has added six new charges to the case. [Editor’s Note: In Norway, the crime of rape also includes incomplete sexual acts committed against a victim who is unable to resist.] The most serious of the new charges allegedly occurred in July 2020, when Marius was said to have received and transported at least 3.5 kilos of marijuana from Lørenskog to Tønsberg (locations located an hour and a half away by car), where he delivered it to a person. The 29-year-old, once seen as a symbol of the openness of the monarchy, has acknowledged those allegations as true, with his attorney noting that he was not paid in the incident. Other new charges are related to two alleged violations of a restraining order, and three offenses …

Ornate medieval ring discovered in Norway’s oldest town

Last summer, Linda Åsheim found a ring so beautiful it looks like it could have been made yesterday. But Åsheim is an archaeologist, and she found the rare artifact while excavating in a Norwegian town believed to be the oldest in the country. The gorgeous golden ring is decorated with a gemstone and filigree décor—and is over 800 years old. “When I first saw the ring when I was digging, I couldn’t believe that it was gold, but it immediately had the shine that gold has even if it has been in the ground for hundreds of years,” Åsheim, who works at the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage, tells Popular Science.  She unearthed it while on a dig in Tønsberg, a town in southeastern Norway dating back to about 871 CE.  “I was the only archaeologist out on the dig that day, so there wasn’t anybody to confer with,” she explains “I was a bit uncertain if it was a genuine …
