Inside NYC’s overlooked primary – Salon.com

At a Bayside Queens town hall, Chuck Park, a former member of the foreign service and a Democratic challenger to Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., was met with a packed room of supporters who had come to hear out the progressive candidate. As the June 23 primary approaches, Park, whose bid has operated in the shadow of high-profile progressive campaigns in other parts of New York City, is betting that a grassroots, volunteer-driven campaign will be able to win the day. The town hall in Bayside was standing room only ahead of Park’s appearance, with about 140 voters packed into the Hana Adult Day Care center in northeast Queens. The crowd was a mix of older and younger supporters, who were excited to see a challenger to Meng, the 13-year incumbent in the district. At the town hall, Park told a story he often tells at campaign events and in media interviews that sparked his decision to run: In August 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Dayra, a six-year-old girl from Queens, and two of …

Mamdani skipped NYC’s Israel Day Parade. Supporters say he missed the point.

Mamdani skipped NYC’s Israel Day Parade. Supporters say he missed the point.

NEW YORK (RNS) — An estimated 60,000 marchers and more than 100,000 spectators gathered on Fifth Avenue on Sunday (May 31) for New York City’s Israel Day Parade, an annual event that has drawn criticism from those who oppose Israel’s military actions and government. By not attending the event, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a pro-Palestinian activist and staunch critic of Israel, became the first sitting New York City mayor since the parade’s founding in 1964 to skip it.  The parade’s supporters say participation is foremost about supporting the New York Jewish community — which has faced escalating antisemitic incidents since the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, and the ensuing war in Gaza — rather than the actions of the Israeli government. The city is home to the largest population of Jews outside of Israel. Several other state and city leaders joined in the festivities and gave speeches, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and former NYC mayors Michael R. Bloomberg and Eric Adams. Jessica Tisch, the city’s Jewish police commissioner, was a marshal. “What an incredible display of unity, …

The $400-a-month search for connection: Inside NYC’s luxury wellness club boom

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more There is no concept of time here. I’m only vaguely aware of the 64 people around me, eyes squeezed shut as sweat beads on my skin. We are — all of us — inside the massive, 185-degree sauna at Othership — one of a growing number of New York “wellness clubs.” These members-only spaces are designed to improve physical and mental well-being and drive connections, or so they say. The group’s loud exhales get faster and deeper by the minute. I squint open an eye to see an impossibly muscular instructor wafting a towel aggressively, heaving avalanches of hot air over us. The instructor asks us to dig deep and share something we’re grateful for. A poreless woman raises her hand to say she’s …

An interfaith vigil kicks off NYC’s ‘No Kings’ march

An interfaith vigil kicks off NYC’s ‘No Kings’ march

NEW YORK (RNS) — Hundreds gathered at Central Park’s Columbus Circle entrance on Saturday morning (March 28) for an interfaith vigil ahead of New York City’s “No Kings” march to protest the Trump administration.  The Rev. Paul Raushenbush, president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance, kicked off the event by noting the importance of faith communities taking a place within the “No Kings” movement. “Faithful people from all different backgrounds have to show up for ‘No Kings’ because authoritarians and would-be kings … their main pillar is often religious folks who want to prop up autocracy so they have proximity to power and impose their idea on what faith is on all the rest of us,” he told the crowd gathered in front of the USS Maine National Monument. In his hands, Raushenbush held a sign that read “Yes to religious freedom for all” and “Christian Nationalism” crossed out. Saturday was the third edition of the No Kings rally and drew millions across the country, and in Europe, for protests in more than 3,500 cities, including …

Mamdani Is Shutting Down NYC’s Disastrous AI Chatbot

Santiago / Getty Images Just one month into his new job, New York City mayor Mamdani is cracking down on more than just predatory landlords. Apparently, useless AI chatbots are also on his administration’s agenda. In a press conference held last week, Mamdani made it a point to single out New York City’s large language model as a target for destruction. According to local publication The City, the mayor was addressing the Big Apple’s $12 billion budget gap, at least some of which he said can be attributed to the city’s unstable AI system. “The previous administration had an AI chatbot that was functionally unusable,” Mamdani said, referring to disgraced former mayor Eric Adams. “It was costing the administration around half a million dollars. That, in and of itself, is not something that can bridge this kind of a gap, but it’s an indication of the ways in which money has been spent while refusing to account for the actual costs of what these programs are.” …

NYC’s Zohran Mamdani sworn in as mayor

Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor of New York City on Thursday, ushering in a historic administration marked by progressive policy priorities and an emphasis on inclusive governance. Mamdani, 34, began his term just after midnight in a private ceremony at the decommissioned Old City Hall subway station, a symbolic nod to the city’s transit history and working-class communities. The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran, highlighting his status as the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first mayor of South Asian descent. The ceremonial setting reflected his focus on transit and the diverse communities that make up the city. Later Thursday afternoon, Mamdani participated in a public inauguration outside City Hall, where Brooklyn-born Sen. Bernie Sanders administered a ceremonial oath as thousands gathered. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered remarks celebrating the election as a milestone for the city’s political evolution. The event included interfaith invocations, musical performances and block party-style celebrations along Broadway’s “Canyon of Heroes,” drawing attention to …
