Subdued Lebanon Liberation Day celebrations under new Israeli occupation | Israel attacks Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon – On May 25, 2000, the last Israeli troops withdrew from southern Lebanon ending their 18-year occupation. This expulsion of Israeli forces by an armed movement led by Hezbollah has been a cause of national celebration in Lebanon ever since, but this year, a new occupation in the south has dampened the mood. “Liberation Day is a sacred day for us,” Ali Saleh, 55, from Jwaya in southern Lebanon told Al Jazeera. “It is a holiday of victory, pride and dignity.” Saleh said he would spend this Liberation Day at the Camille Chamoun Stadium on the southern periphery of Beirut, where he has lived with his wife and son after being displaced in March, when Israeli forces again invaded the south. He is one of more than 1.2 million people in Lebanon who have been displaced from their homes, predominantly from south Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, since then. In the past two years, Lebanon has been invaded twice by Israel. In early 2025, more than two months after a ceasefire was agreed, …

This Indigenous Language Survived Russian Occupation. Can It Survive YouTube?

This Indigenous Language Survived Russian Occupation. Can It Survive YouTube?

When anthropology researcher Ashley McDermott was doing fieldwork in Kyrgyzstan a few years ago, she says many people voiced the same concern: Children were losing touch with their indigenous language. The Central Asian country of 7 million people was under Russian control for a century until 1991, but Kyrgyz (pronounced kur-giz) survived and remains widely spoken among adults. McDermott, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, says she also heard that some kids in rural villages where Kyrgyz dominated had spontaneously learned to speak Russian. The adults largely blamed a singular force: YouTube. McDermott and a team of five researchers across four universities in the US and Kyrgyzstan have released new research they believe proves the fears about YouTube’s influence are valid. The group simulated user behavior on YouTube and collected nearly 11,000 unique search results and video recommendations. What they found is that Kyrgyz-language searches for popular kid interests such as cartoons, fairy tales, and mermaids often did not yield content in Kyrgyz. Even after watching 10 children’s videos featuring Kyrgyz speech to …

Chernobyl at 40: My life as a meteorologist under Russian occupation

Lyudmila Dyblenko stayed at Chernobyl during the Russian occupation in 2022 Mykhaylo Palinchak As Russian troops rolled across the Belarusian border into Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Lyudmila Dyblenko, head of the Chernobyl Meteorological Station, told her staff to gather their belongings and flee. But by the time she had done that, her own window to escape was closed; Russia had seized the exclusion zone around the plant. “I started gathering monitors and equipment, then it was way too late,” says Dyblenko, speaking to me in the small cottage that houses the weather station. Although she had no choice at that point but to hunker down, she heroically decided to keep taking the vital radiation, temperature, wind, rain and other measurements that allow scientists to monitor conditions across Chernobyl. “I decided to continue my work,” she says. “I really love my job, and I really love my country.” The task of taking and transmitting readings is usually automated, but by 9 March, her electricity supply was cut off. This left her equipment useless and also …

Lebanon condemns Israel’s ‘clear intention’ to impose new occupation of its territory

Lebanon denounced what it called Israel’s plans for “a new occupation of Lebanese territory” on Tuesday, after Israel said it would establish a “security zone” in the country. Defence Minister Major General Michel Menassa said the remarks by his counterpart Israel Katz were “no longer mere threats”, but reflected “a clear intention to impose a new occupation of Lebanese territory, forcibly displace hundreds of thousands of citizens, and systematically destroy villages and towns in the south”. Katz also said Israel would have “security control” up to the Litani river, an idea which Menassa denounced as “a deepening of the aggression against Lebanese land and national sovereignty”. Tehran-backed Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the war by launching attacks on Israel to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel has responded with broad strikes across Lebanon and a ground offensive. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced Israel’s deployment of troops against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as an “illegal invasion” that violates its “integrity and sovereignty”. Fresh Israeli strikes hit the country’s south and near Beirut on Tuesday, the state-run National News …
