Trump faces 60-day Iran war deadline, Hegseth floats ceasefire loophole

U.S. President Donald Trump exits Air Force One as he arrives at Miami International Airport in Florida, U.S., April 11, 2026. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters President Donald Trump is running up against a Friday legal deadline that threatens to halt U.S. military operations against Iran — but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested Thursday that the ongoing ceasefire nullifies that cutoff date. Under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, Trump is required to withdraw U.S. armed forces 60 days after reporting their deployment to Congress — unless the legislative branch authorizes the military action, which it has not done. The U.S. and Israel first struck Iran on Feb. 28, and Trump sent a letter notifying Congress of the action on March 2, starting the 60-day clock and setting up a May 1 deadline. Trump may seek a 30-day extension under the resolution, but he has not done so yet, according to lawmakers. Hegseth, however, said in Senate testimony Thursday that he believes the statutory countdown clock “pauses or stops in a ceasefire.” The U.S. and Iran are …

Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters President Donald Trump said Wednesday he strongly supports the United Arab Emirates’ decision to leave the international oil cartel OPEC, saying he believes the move will bring energy prices down. “I think it’s great,” Trump told reporters at the White House after meeting with Artemis II astronauts. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is “very smart,” said Trump, “and he probably maybe wants to go his own way. That’s a good thing.” “I think ultimately it’s a good thing for getting the price of gas down, getting oil down, getting everything down,” Trump said, adding, “they’re having some problems in OPEC.” Oil prices have spiraled upwards since the U.S. and Israel launched a war with Iran on Feb. 28. The …

Bosnia signs up to Trump-linked pipeline to reduce Russian gas dependence | Energy News

The European Union warns that the deal on the link to Croatia could jeopardise Bosnia’s bid to join the bloc. Published On 28 Apr 202628 Apr 2026 Bosnia and Herzegovina has signed a deal to construct a gas pipeline that is backed by investors connected to United States President Donald Trump and promises to reduce the country’s dependence on Russian supply. The agreement, signed with neighbouring Croatia on Tuesday at a summit in the city of Dubrovnik, aims to relieve Sarajevo of its reliance on Russian gas, which it needs to do in advance of a European Union ban on energy purchases from Moscow set to take effect next year. Bosnian Prime Minister Borjana Kristo, who signed the deal alongside Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, described it as a “major step forward” that strengthens energy security and diversifies supply. However, the European Union, of which Bosnia is seeking membership, warned that the Southern Interconnection Agreement, as it is formally known, could jeopardise the country’s accession bid and put at risk more than $1bn in aid …

U.S. Navy | Getty Images President Donald Trump and his national security team on Monday discussed Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. lifts its blockade and the war ends, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed. The proposal would postpone negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions for a later date, Axios and The Associated Press reported earlier Monday. It remains unclear if Trump, who has vowed not to lift the blockade until a deal with Iran is “100% complete,” will entertain the reported offer to end the two-month-old war. “I will confirm the president has met with his national security team this morning,” Leavitt said at a press briefing Monday afternoon when asked about the reports. “The meeting may be ongoing,” Leavitt said …
