The city will host the U.S. Olympic marathon trials for both men and women on March 25, 2028, USA Track & Field announced Thursday. It was selected over Phoenix. Three men and three women will qualify for Team USA during the trials, which will be the first selection event for any U.S. sport ahead of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, according to organizers. The full course of the 26.2-mile race, which NBC will broadcast, will be released in the coming months. Members of the local organizing committee said that the race will begin at Washington University’s Francis Olympic Field, the main venue used during the 1904 Olympics, and that it will include several loops of downtown before it finishes in Energizer Park, the home of the city’s MLS team. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rylee White had never even heard of the fast-paced sport of handball until her roommate mentioned a TikTok video about tryouts in Los Angeles for the U.S. Olympic women’s team — no experience necessary. White, a 27-year-old screenwriter, knew she had to go. She wasn’t the only one. More than 150 women — buoyed by the viral video — attended the tryouts in January, a five-fold increase from previous turnouts. Five months later, White is one of a handful of women who have packed their bags and moved to Florida to join USA Handball’s national residency program, hoping to eventually be selected to represent the United States at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Five new mules at Olympic National Park in Washington State are ready for the busy tourist season. Murl, Cutti, Pip, Checkers, and Gopher join the park’s large working mule herd. Mules have helped maintain the trails in national parks since the early 1900s, and they continue to help monitor Olympic’s one million acres, 600 miles of trails, and 64 trailheads. Murl, Cutti, Pip, Checkers, and Gopher were named by the park staff and are a nod to the different native plants and animals found at the national park. The mules help trail crews in more wild areas of the park. Olympic National Park’s mule herd works from April through October and then spends the winter in a large pasture.
