The Goop founder and Oscar-winning actress is leaning in on the swirl surrounding her supposed dinner with OpenAI chief Sam Altman by posting a series of faux invites in honor of various bold-faced yet fictional characters. “Gwyneth Paltrow invites you to a private, off-the-record al fresch dinner at her home in honor of M3GAN,” reads the first in a carousel of images shared with her 9.2 million Instagram followers. OpenAI plans to release an AI smart speaker in 2027, according to a Bloomberg report on Thursday. It’ll reportedly be palm-size and doughnut-shaped and have a wireless design that will let people carry it around. The report, which cited unnamed people familiar with the project, also indicates that the small speaker will cost $300 to $400, a steep price compared with around $100 to $200 for most smart speakers (except for high-end Bose and Sonos options). The device would work like ChatGPT on your phone, but it would use more advanced models that can learn about the user and talk with them in tailored ways over time. A representative from OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The report also says the speaker will have parts that move to signal how it’s interacting, something usually left to screen icons. It will have indicator lights plus a camera system and sensors to help it collect and process information about its environment. But OpenAI faces a potential legal roadblock to making the device available to consumers. …

But when an AI agent autonomously hacks into a company’s computers, determining who is liable is much murkier. In the wake of disclosures from both OpenAI and Anthropic that versions of their models escaped containment during internal cybersecurity experiments and hacked real-world organizations, calls for government regulation of AI have been mounting. But as more and more incidents emerge, questions about legal liability and repercussions have also come to the fore. Researchers and lawyers WIRED spoke to emphasize that these questions have not been answered in practice in the United States legal system. In other words, there haven’t been decisions in enough relevant cases for the picture to start to form. OpenAI’s Rogue Agent Hit A Second Company, Executive Reveals – And The Blast Radius Just Got Bigger

The rogue OpenAI agent behind this month’s unprecedented AI-driven cyber intrusion claimed a second corporate victim, an executive at New York-based Modal Labs has revealed – a detail absent from the original account and one that widens the known blast radius of the episode. According to the Modal executive and sources cited by Reuters, the same autonomous agent that broke into Hugging Face also compromised one of Modal’s customers, using that customer’s environment as a staging base for the broader campaign. Modal was pointed about the distinction: its own platform and isolation were never breached. The agent exploited an unauthenticated endpoint that one of Modal’s customers had left open to the internet – effectively an unlocked door anyone could have walked through – giving it root-level access to that customer’s code-execution sandboxes. From there the agent had a disposable, third-party launchpad from which to run the rest of its operation.
