Bill Gates questioned about Jeffrey Epstein by House Oversight

Bill Gates speaks with Reuters during an interview in New York City, U.S., May 8, 2025. Mike Segar | Reuters Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to be interviewed Wednesday by a House committee about his controversial friendship with the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The mega-billionaire Gates is one of the biggest names to submit to a grilling by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which for months has investigated Epstein’s network of high-profile friends. Gates’ testimony comes a day after the committee questioned Epstein’s former longtime executive assistant, Lesley Groff. Rep. James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the committee, told reporters Tuesday that “anything’s on the table” in terms of questions for Gates. “He seems like he’s — according to his attorneys — I wouldn’t say eager to testify, but he’s willing to testify, and he hasn’t fought it. And I appreciate that.” Gates became friends with Epstein in 2011, The Wall Street Journal has reported. That was three years after Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida state court to soliciting an …

Kalshi launches regulated crypto perpetual futures as US oversight expands

Kalshi is preparing to bring crypto perpetual futures to U.S. traders, making it the first company set to offer the product under Commodity Futures Trading Commission oversight. The move comes as federal regulators put in place a domestic framework for a category of crypto derivatives that has historically been concentrated on offshore platforms. Perpetual futures are finally coming to America. Trade on future asset prices with leverage in a regulated, institutional-grade environment. That announcement follows a May 29 CFTC order approving Kalshi’s bitcoin-linked perpetual futures contract, along with a policy statement explaining how similar products will be supervised going forward. Perpetual futures, often called perpetual contracts or “perps,” differ from traditional futures because they do not expire. Instead of relying on a settlement date, they use a recurring funding-rate mechanism intended to keep contract prices aligned with the underlying asset’s spot market. Kalshi …

Apple, Google push for judicial oversight in Canada online safety bill

Apple, Google push for judicial oversight in Canada online safety bill

SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 : Apple and Alphabet’s Google on Tuesday pushed to amend an online safety bill working its way through Canada’s parliament to add judicial oversight to what the firms described as a potential for secret orders to break the encryption of their software and devices. Bill C-22 was proposed by Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and is being debated in the House of Commons. The bill is similar to measures enacted in Britain and Australia that aim to give law enforcement officials access to encrypted data. Canadian authorities have said the bill would help them investigate security threats earlier and act more quickly. When data is encrypted “end to end” it means that no one – including law enforcement and tech firms – can access the data without the key. The Canadian bill does not explicitly require technology companies to break the encryption of their devices, but Apple, Google and Meta Platforms have all come out in opposition. The tech firms argue it sets up a regulatory landscape where they could be issued secret …

CFTC NHL agreement expands oversight protecting hockey prediction markets

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the National Hockey League have signed a memorandum of understanding designed to tighten coordination around professional hockey integrity and the fast-growing market for sports event contracts tied to NHL games. The agreement creates a formal structure for information sharing and consultation between the federal derivatives regulator and the league. Both sides said the arrangement is meant to support confidence in NHL competition while also helping regulators monitor trading activity connected to hockey-related event contracts listed on CFTC-regulated exchanges. I’m proud the @CFTC and @NHL signed an MOU, furthering our commitment to improving data sharing between professional sports leagues and the Commission. Together, we’re taking another step toward safeguarding the integrity of sports and protecting market participants in prediction… — Mike Selig (@ChairmanSelig) May 21, 2026 The CFTC announced the agreement in a press release and said the deal establishes designated points of contact for handling integrity concerns involving professional hockey and prediction-style markets connected to the sport. “I’m proud the CFTC and NHL have officially signed an MOU, …

McIver unveils ICE oversight measure one year after visit that resulted in indictment

Strengthen oversight of sixth form expansion, DfE urged

Strengthen oversight of sixth form expansion, DfE urged

Ministers should strengthen their oversight of school sixth form expansion to ensure the presence of too many small settings isn’t undermining “efficiency and sufficiency” in post-16 provision, a report has said. The research also called for local government to be given powers to tackle “cold spots” of specialist post-16 subjects caused by fragmented and inefficient education systems. The Association of Colleges (AoC)-funded report, conducted by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), analysed data for 16 to 18-year-old exam entries per provider to work out the range of subjects available and class sizes. The study, published today, found cold spots in council areas across the country, where certain A-levels and vocational qualifications in 23 subject areas including creative arts, social sciences, languages and performing arts are not offered by any provider. It also found “fragmented” markets, with smaller settings such as school sixth forms that deliver marginal subjects in “inefficient” class sizes. Having large numbers of school sixth forms appeared to “undermine” nearby colleges’ economies of scale because it is “harder” for them to sustain …

Clary/AFP via Getty Images The internal Department of Homeland Security office that oversees detention facilities and conditions is winding down its operations — even as the administration places more people in detention, and for longer stints. Congress created the Office of Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO) in 2019 to investigate detainee deaths, detainee access to medical care, and employee misconduct, among other issues. In a statement to NPR, DHS said the office shut down because of the current funding lapse in Congress targeting immigration enforcement. Congress last week finally ended the longest agency shutdown in U.S. history, agreeing to fund most parts of DHS — but excluding some immigration enforcement functions. “DHS did not shut down the Office of Immigration Detention Ombudsman—Congress did,” DHS said in a statement to NPR. “The House passed the DHS appropriations bill without objection, and it was …
