Canadian Museum of Human Rights Facing Legal Threat Over Nakba Show

Canadian Museum of Human Rights Facing Legal Threat Over Nakba Show

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg has been threatened with legal action by an Israeli organization over an exhibition about the Nakba, with the group arguing that the presentation “politicizes” history, according to local media reports.   Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center announced this week that it had sent a formal legal demand to the museum’s board of trustees and senior leadership protesting “Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present,” an exhibition scheduled to open at the museum on June 27. A statement included with the filing from Shurat HaDin president Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, first reported by the Winnipeg Sun, warns the federally funded museum of “contributing to division and misunderstanding” by “erasing Jewish history” and “delegitimizing Jewish self-determination,” adding that the exhibition could fuel “hostility against the Jewish community.”  Related Articles The exhibition focuses on the expulsion of approximately 750,000 Palestinians in 1948 following the creation of the State of Israel—an event known in Arabic as “the catastrophe,” or al-Nakba. According to Amnesty International, the roughly 7 million Palestinian refugees living today comprise one of the world’s largest displaced populations. The exhibition’s website describes the show as exploring “the …

Israeli interfaith peace march offers alternative to ultranationalist Jerusalem Day events

JERUSALEM (RNS) — Hundreds of religious leaders and peace activists walked together through the streets of Jerusalem on Monday (May 18) for an interfaith peace march — a 4-year-old event that took on added urgency this year against the backdrop of ongoing war and mounting intolerance in a city venerated by Jews, Muslims and Christians.  The Interfaith March for Human Rights and Peace is one of many initiatives spearheaded by the Interfaith Forum for Human Rights that brings together Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Druze and other activists and a coalition of 30-plus organizations. Singing “We Shall Overcome” and carrying placards with the word “Trust” in Hebrew and Arabic, participants traveled to the march from across Israel, aiming to bridge religious and ethnic gaps at an especially volatile time in the Middle East.    Druze Sheikh Younis Amasha, director of the Forum for Religious Leaders in Israel, urged the marchers to speak “with one voice” to proclaim that “human life is a sacred value and there is no place for hatred, extremism and violence.” He also called …

Gaza aid flotilla organisers say 41 boats intercepted, 10 still sailing | Gaza News

Foreign ministers of 10 countries say Israel’s storming of the aid flotilla is a blatant violation of international law. Published On 19 May 202619 May 2026 The organisers of an aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip say Israeli forces raided 41 of their boats in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, while 10 vessels continue to sail towards the besieged Palestinian enclave. The vessels still sailing were about 121 nautical miles (224km) from Gaza, the Global Sumud Flotilla said on Tuesday morning. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list More than 50 vessels sailed from the Turkish port city of Marmaris last week, in what organisers described as the final stage of a journey aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Israeli forces began storming the boats in international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Monday, organisers said, and abducted activists. Ireland’s president ‘proud’ of sister detained by Israel en route to Gaza – POLITICO

Earlier, the Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the flotilla as “a provocation for the sake of provocation” that had set sail “to serve Hamas, to divert attention from Hamas’ refusal to disarm, and to obstruct progress on President Trump’s peace plan.” Israel’s foreign press department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. In Dublin, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement it was “actively monitoring” what was happening to the flotilla, which activists were live-streaming Monday as Israeli vessels intercepted and boarded their ships at sea. Most of the flotilla had departed Sunday from the Turkish port of Marmaris, some after sailing from Italy. Flotilla activists issued a pre-recorded message from Margaret Connolly in conjunction with their announcement of her detention by Israel. “If you are watching this video, it means I have been kidnapped from my boat in the flotilla by the Israeli occupying forces and am now being held illegally in an Israeli prison,” she said, holding her Irish passport in her right hand and wearing a T-shirt bearing an outline …

Growing bread queues in Gaza as Israel restricts fuel, flour imports | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Growing bread queues in Gaza as Israel restricts fuel, flour imports | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Gaza City, Gaza – Standing in a long queue under the beating sun, 14-year-old Muhammed al-Roubi was waiting to buy bread. But there was a strong chance that, despite his patience, he would not get any. A flour and fuel shortage in recent weeks, brought on by Israeli restrictions on imports into Gaza, means that bakeries cannot produce as much bread as Palestinians in Gaza need. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Palestinians, the vast majority of them living displaced as a result of Israel’s genocidal war on the territory, are instead forced to wait for hours in queues outside of the few remaining bakeries to get subsidised bread packages. “My uncle’s family and ours live in the same house, and we share food, so we need a large amount of bread every day,” said al-Roubi, who had come to the bakery with his cousin before separating and joining different queues. “That is why my cousin and I each stand in a separate line,” he explained. “Some days, we return empty-handed because the …

Three community kitchen workers among eight killed by Israel in Gaza | Gaza News

Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 871 Palestinians since the so-called ceasefire began last year. Published On 17 May 202617 May 2026 Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip have killed at least eight Palestinians, including three in Deir el-Balah, and others in Khan Younis and Beit Lahiya. Sunday’s attack on the central city of Deir el-Balah targeted a community kitchen and all three victims were community kitchen workers, according to Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from Gaza City. “This shows that Israel is not only targeting people, but also organisations serving the community across Gaza,” Khoudary added. Reacting to the same attack, Hamas said it was “a deliberate war crime and a renewed scene of the ongoing genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip”. “This occurs amid an unjustified international silence and inaction that emboldens the occupation to continue its massacres, in blatant disregard for all international values, norms, and laws,” said the armed group’s statement. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry’s statistics published on Sunday, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed …

How will Izz al-Din al-Haddad assassination impact Hamas’s Gaza operations? | Drone Strikes News

The killing of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the recently appointed head of Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, has dealt a symbolic blow to the Palestinian group in Gaza, but the impact on its military operations is far from certain. Al-Haddad was killed on Friday in a sophisticated dual-strike on a residential apartment in Gaza City’s Remal neighbourhood and a vehicle attempting to flee the scene. The delivery of heavy munitions into a densely populated area, packed with displaced civilians, killed seven other Palestinians, including women and children, and wounded 50 people. Yet, despite Israeli claims that the killing will cripple the group’s operational capacity, analysts argue that its decentralised nature is built to absorb such shocks. As the region watches to see how the resistance faction will respond, al-Haddad’s death raises critical questions about the future of the fragile “ceasefire” and who remains to lead the Qassam Brigades. Operational impact: Will the Qassam Brigades collapse? The killings of Qassam Brigades commanders, including Mohammed Deif, Marwan Issa, and Yahya Sinwar’s brother Mohammed, left al-Haddad as …
