Princess Anne’s ‘un-royal’ home Gatcombe Park has a split personality

Princess Anne’s ‘un-royal’ home Gatcombe Park has a split personality

Taking a look around my living room as I work from home, I wince at the sight of the clutter – dispersed toddler toys and pending piles of things to ‘sort’. But it is totally normal – it’s not like I live in a palace! It turns out that even royal residences have their relatable areas. It was refreshing to see Princess Anne’s “cluttered” living room during the coronavirus lockdown, and her countryside home is quite the tale of two halves.  The Princess Royal’s Grade II-listed Georgian manor, which was gifted to her by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 as a wedding present, has all the special features you’d expect a royal home to possess. The exterior is grand (some would say postcard-worthy, in fact), and the regal elements continue inside. Downstairs, there are four reception rooms, a billiard room and a library, as well as a conservatory, while upstairs boasts five main bedrooms and four secondary bedrooms. © Alamy Stock PhotoThe estate is very impressive The expansive 730-acre estate is also a …

Judge orders restoration of National Park changes at sites that ‘disparaged’ U.S.

Judge orders restoration of National Park changes at sites that ‘disparaged’ U.S.

A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to restore sites changed under an executive order calling for the nation’s museums, parks and landmarks to not display elements that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living.” The preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Massachusetts also orders a pause on any additional changes, writing that the plaintiffs have shown that these efforts are meant “to rewrite the Nation’s history with a white-out pen.” “History cannot be faithfully told while excluding the experiences of communities whose contributions, struggles, and achievements form an important part of our Nation’s story,” the judge wrote. The Trump administration must also provide a weekly status report describing the progress it’s made with these changes, the judge wrote. “Under the guise of promoting American dignity, this Administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the removal of all signs, displays, and interpretive exhibits at National Parks that do not align with its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths,” Kelley wrote. The order comes in response to a February lawsuit …

Farmers in a national park are turning down lights at night to help wildlife – it could be good for crops too

Farmers in a national park are turning down lights at night to help wildlife – it could be good for crops too

Growing evidence suggests that excessive outdoor lighting at night may be harming wildlife. For generations, rural communities worked to the rhythms of daylight and darkness. Today, the amount of harsh light switched on at nightime is having profound consequences for many living things. Agricultural properties are often remote and vulnerable to equipment or livestock theft. In response, many landowners have now installed security floodlights, powerful halogen beams, and unshielded external LEDs to illuminate yards overnight. The North York Moors National Park, an international dark sky reserve in the north of England, has been working with farmers to reduce the impact of artificial light on the natural environment. The initiative is about ensuring that lighting is used in the right place, at the right time, and at the appropriate intensity. This might involve installing downward-facing fixtures, reducing glare through shielding, or switching to warmer-coloured lighting that is less disruptive to wildlife. The best places to start trying to reduce bright nighttime lights are those rich in wildlife, and farms in the park are often in the …

What some mobile home park residents see after investors buy in

What some mobile home park residents see after investors buy in

Jennifer Ludovice, a spokeswoman for Equity LifeStyle Properties — the owner of Colony Cove, where Calabrese lives — said the company works hard to “provide a community that residents are proud to call home.” She added that rent increased an average of 4.2% annually between 2017 and 2026 and that its costs are “attractive compared to other housing options in the area.” No bar on takeovers There are 7.2 million occupied mobile homes across the U.S., accounting for 5.4% of the nation’s housing, according to census data. Many park residents are seniors on fixed incomes, people with disabilities and families with limited means. Most of the communities are in Southern states, such as Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi; in New Mexico, 15% of homes are manufactured housing, the highest percentage in the nation. Although the costs of buying a manufactured home are rising, they remain well below what it costs to buy a new single-family home, data shows. The U.S. census says the cost of a new mobile home averaged $131,200 in 2025, compared with $530,000 …

Netflix’s Korean Crime Drama Paper Man With Cho Jung-seok, Park Hae-soo

Netflix has lined up its next Korean crime drama, Paper Man (working title), starring Cho Jung-seok, Park Hae-soo and Claudia Kim, from director Lee Il-hyung. The series follows Cha Myung-jo (Cho), a downtrodden husband who works at a maker of knockoff character stickers and lives in the shadow of his far more accomplished wife. When he turns out a counterfeit bill so flawless it can’t be told from the real thing, he is pulled into a dangerous world he never imagined. The show is pitched as a crime thriller laced with drama and humor, exploring “the value of money, human desire and the thin line between what is considered ‘real’ and ‘fake’ in society.” The project reunites Lee with Park, who starred in the director’s recent Netflix series Karma. Lee’s other credits include the 2016 hit A Violent Prosecutor. Cho (Hospital Playlist) plays the everyman center of the story, whose surprising gift for counterfeiting sets the story in motion. Park, of Squid Game and Narco-Saints fame, plays Oh Seung-eop, the first deputy director of the …

After more than 20 miles of hiking throughout the week, Crago was nearing the end of his trip with his friend when he encountered a bear cub near the trail. “Something catches my attention off to the left. I look over and it was a smaller cub,” he recalled. Moments later, he spotted a larger grizzly bear nearby. “No more than 15 feet above on the hill and on the same snow patch was a larger grizzly bear,” Crago said. Recognizing the danger, he …

Monstropolis is currently under construction, replacing the former Muppets Courtyard area, and does not yet have an opening date. Its story is set right after where Pixar’s 2001 animated hit left off, when monsters Sully and Mike Wazowski discovered that human laughter generates more power than screams. “The experience is built around H.U.M.A.N. Fighting Ebola in a park that’s home to rare gorillas : NPR

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to several hundred mountain gorillas — about a third of the population. Rangers are setting up checkpoints to screen visitors for Ebola and trying to protect the primates, who are very vulnerable to the virus. Roberto Schmidt/AFP/via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Roberto Schmidt/AFP/via Getty Images When Emmanuel de Merode looks around, it’s a picture of serenity. “Most evenings there are elephants crossing the river and pods of hippos,” says de Merode, director of the Virunga National Park, which encompasses about 2 million acres in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Mitumba Mountains, home to lowland gorillas, rise up before him. Behind him are the Rwenzori Mountains with glaciers and snow-capped tops beside the equator. “It is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” he says. But beyond this picturesque scene, there is a volatile combination of brutal rebel violence and a burgeoning Ebola outbreak. De Merode and his team of over 800 park rangers are on the front lines as …

National Park Service Orders Removal of Quotes at Bunker Hill

National Park Service Orders Removal of Quotes at Bunker Hill

After a visitor to the Bunker Hill Monument in Massachusetts complained that a panel contained a quote expressing “woke” feminist ideology, the National Park Service ordered a review of materials at the site. As a result of the review, the Washington Post reported Thursday, the organization ordered the removal of three quotes at the site. The one that drew the initial complaint, referencing women’s suffrage, was not set for removal. While the panel quotes have not yet been removed, a spokesperson for the Interior Department characterized the removal order to the Post as a “routine exhibit refresh.” Related Articles “Through President Trump, we have encouraged Americans to visit our cultural and historic sites and engage in meaningful conversations about the moments that have shaped our country,” the spokesperson Katie Martin said in a statement. At Bunker HIll, historical displays are accompanied by panels with quotes that reflect on the monument and the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major skirmish of the Revolutionary War. One of the quotes removed came from an 1971 editorial by …
