Police have been called to a festival in London on Saturday evening as several people have been left injured. The cultural festival was ‘temporarily paused’ late on August 1 as Metropolitan Police were called to the scene to deal with an ‘overcrowding issue’. The Ghana Party in the Park has been taking place in Barnet – the force say that none of the injuries are life-threatening in nature. They have asked the public not to speculate about the incident and said rumours of a stabbing are untrue, The Mirror reports. The former shadow home secretary and mother of the House of Commons was suspended for the second time from the party last summer. The MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington lost the whip after saying she did not regret the remarks about racism which triggered the initial loss of the whip in 2023. She argued in a letter to The Observer in April 2023 that Jewish, Irish and Traveller communities experience prejudice rather than racism. She apologised and withdrew the remarks, and was reinstated into the party just before the 2024 general election after a long election. She also finished an antisemitism awareness course and received a formal warning. (The Conversation) — I joined members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement at Chatter Park in Hong Kong on May 13, 2000, as they celebrated World Falun Dafa Day. The annual event commemorates the anniversary of the day the group claims its leader, Li Hongzhi, first made Falun Gong practices public. Under the hot midday sun, surrounded by police and camera-clicking journalists, we performed the five main Falun Gong body exercises. Falun Gong, which translates as “Practice of the Law Wheel,” is also known as Falun Dafa, which means “The Great Law of the Law Wheel.” It is a spiritual movement that combines bodily exercises with lessons to help practitioners endure hardship and act ethically in what its teachings consider a spiritually polluted world. In my conversations with the Hong Kong group’s organizers, they explained that their choice of a well-known, centrally located park for the exercises – and their invitation to journalists to cover the event – was intended to signal to Hong Kong residents and the wider world that the movement remained active …

A third poll has recorded Reform UK’s declining popularity in yet more bad news more for Nigel Farage. Just a week after Andy Burnham officially became prime minister, Labour is now leading in Survation’s poll of voting intentions by two percentage points. The researchers put Labour on 26% – up one point from last week – while Reform lags slightly behind on 24%, having lost two points. That is the first time the governing party has taken the lead in a Survation poll since May 2025, with their highest vote share in over a year. More than a third (34%) of Survation’s respondents also said they believed Burnham would make the best prime minister, compared to 22% for Farage and 19% for Kemi Badenoch. The findings come a day after More in Common also reported that Reform had lost its 16-month lead in the polls. The prime minister kept her on in his top team with the equalities brief while handing the education department to deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell in a major blow to Phillipson.
