Democrats press Patel for information after ‘VIP snorkel’ trip

Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), are pressing FBI Director Kash Patel and the Department of Justice’s acting inspector general for answers about whether Patel is using government resources for personal leisure after he took a “VIP snorkel” trip in Hawaii. Contributor: The Navy’s inexcusable accommodation of Kash Patel

The USS Arizona is a tomb. That should have been enough. FBI Director Kash Patel took part in what a Defense Department email obtained by the Associated Press called a “V.I.P. Snorkel” near the sunken battleship at Pearl Harbor last summer. To accommodate that event, U.S. Navy SEALs reportedly transported and escorted Patel and his party by boat to the site, where Patel spent roughly 30 minutes in the water near the wreck. On Dec. 7, 1941, a Japanese bomb pierced the Arizona’s deck and detonated the ship’s forward magazines. The explosion ripped the Arizona apart, sinking the ship in minutes. More than 1,100 members of her crew were killed, and more than 900 of them remain inside the hull at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. Anyone who has stood at the Arizona Memorial understands that it is not simply a historic site. It is a place of solemn reverence. The silence feels different there. Sailors know this. Navy ships entering and leaving Pearl Harbor still render honors as they pass Arizona. For a service …

Patel promised to come after the media. So far, it’s only been women

Patel promised to come after the media. So far, it’s only been women

Before Kash Patel was confirmed as FBI Director, he went on Steve Bannon’s podcast and made a promise that should have ended his nomination on the spot. “We will go out and find the conspirators,” he vowed, “not just in government, but in the media. Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens.” Now, after months of escalating controversies surrounding his leadership, Patel suddenly wants Americans to believe none of this is happening. This week, pressed by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., during an appearance before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee, Patel denied any such targeting campaign. “I can tell you unequivocally, this FBI is targeting and investigating no journalists,” he said. “This FBI is targeting no journalists.” Despite Patel’s theatrical denials under oath, the machinery of the state has already been deployed against the press.  Three journalists have been targeted by Patel’s FBI. Hannah Natanson of the Washington Post had her home raided before dawn, and her phone, laptops and smartwatch seized by federal agents who arrived without …

Kash Patel appeals dismissal of Figliuzzi defamation suit

Kash Patel appeals dismissal of Figliuzzi defamation suit

FBI Director Kash Patel testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 18, 2026. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters FBI Director Kash Patel on Thursday filed an appeal of the recent dismissal of his defamation lawsuit against former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi. Patel had sued Figliuzzi in Houston federal court, alleging that the former FBI counterintelligence assistant director defamed him in a May 2, 2025, interview on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” by saying Patel had “been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of” FBI headquarters. U.S. District Court Judge George Hanks Jr., in his April 21 decision dismissing Patel’s lawsuit, said that Figliuzzi’s statement was “rhetorical hyperbole that cannot constitute defamation.” “Accordingly, Dir. Patel has failed to state a claim against Figliuzzi, and his lawsuit must be dismissed,” Hanks wrote. Hanks dismissed Patel’s suit a day after the FBI director filed an unrelated $250 million defamation lawsuit in D.C. federal court against The Atlantic magazine. The suit relates to an Atlantic article …

The real war is against male loneliness”: Patel, Hegseth walk into a bar on “Saturday Night Live

Matt Damon and Aziz Ansari reprised their roles as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and FBI Director Kash Patel in this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Damon, who last played the conservative justice in 2018, met up spontaneously with Colin Jost‘s Pete Hegseth at a DC bar. The sketch, centered around the idea that several members of the Trump administration are known for their drunken escapades, found Hegseth and Kavanaugh catching up just before last call. “Can you believe I started a war?” Hegseth asked. “Can you believe I ended abortion?” Kavanaugh replied. Jost’s Hegseth maintained that the war in Iran was going exactly to plan. He insisted to Kavanaugh that any negative consequences of the ongoing conflict were already on the way out. He said the war was like “me in a DUI checkpoint, it completely blew over.” Harkening back to Kavanaugh’s infamous confirmation hearing, the Supreme Court justice grew weepy. “The real war is the war against male loneliness,” he said. “I just wish there were more people in this administration who …

FBI Director Kash Patel Says AI Has Stopped Numerous Violent Attacks Against America. We’d Love to See a Single Whiff of Evidence

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech In a recent interview on Sean Hannity’s YouTube podcast, FBI head Kash Patel lauded AI for helping stop multiple violent attacks on innocent people. “AI was never used at the FBI till we got there, literally crazy,” Patel said in his characteristically hopped up affect. “I’m using it everywhere.” Specifically, Patel — who’s been accused of severe issues related to alcohol consumption — alleges that using AI the FBI has been able to foil numerous mass shootings at schools throughout the US. “We stopped a school massacre in North Carolina because we got a tip from our private-sector partners who are building out AI infrastructure,” he bragged. As with everything coming out of the Trump administration, we need to take this statement with a Mar-a-Lago-sized grain of salt. While it remains to be seen whether AI has really helped the FBI thwart mass casualty events, there’s extremely compelling evidence that the exact opposite is also true. For starters, …

Did Kash Patel use AI to rip off the Beastie Boys? : NPR

A still from an FBI promotional video (left) bears a strong resemblance to the opening shot of the original 1994 music video for the Beastie Boy’s “Sabotage” (right). NPR found at least six examples where shots in the FBI video matched those in music video. Experts say the most likely explanation is that AI-was used to re-create the shots. Screenshots by Emily Bogle for NPR/X and YouTube hide caption toggle caption Screenshots by Emily Bogle for NPR/X and YouTube A promotional video for the FBI posted by director Kash Patel appears to have used AI to generate short clips nearly identical to those in the Beastie Boys’ iconic music video for their 1994 classic song “Sabotage.” Patel released the video on Monday on X, in a post about the FBI’s effort to combat “massive fraud.” The roughly-two minute video used the instrumental version of the song “Sabotage,” and footage nearly identical to the original music video, interspersed with what appeared to be authentic footage of FBI agents conducting their work. With President Trump’s leadership, this …
