Shelley Fabares, the wholesome daughter on The Donna Reed Show who went on to star opposite Elvis Presley in three movies and as Craig T. Nelson’s independent wife on Coach, has died. She was 82. Fabares died Saturday in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her family announced. Survivors include her husband, M*A*S*H actor Mike Farrell, whom she married in 1984. “To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter and comfort,” they said in a statement. “She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued and cared for.” On the original One Day at a Time, Fabares played against her prim, good-girl persona as Francine Webster, a nasty business rival of Bonnie Franklin‘s Ann Romano. Clea Newman remembers her first time volunteering with SeriousFun, the globe-spanning, free camp network for ill children. It was just the one camp back then — in Connecticut — set up by celebrated actor, activist and American icon Paul Newman in 1988. “My dad said, ‘Why don’t you go up and volunteer as a counselor?’” she recalls to The Hollywood Reporter. “I never really babysat much. I was a little nervous about it. And he said, ‘Just try it.’” At the time, Newman, the youngest of his six children, had a whole career mapped out in law. Joy Harmon, forever known for her brief turn in the Paul Newman classic Cool Hand Luke as the young woman who provocatively washes a car with lots of soapy water as overheated prisoners in the chain gang look on, has died. She was 87. Harmon died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles, her family announced. Blond, blue-eyed and perpetually tanned, Harmon served as Groucho Marx’s assistant on the 1961 CBS game show Tell It to Groucho, then starred as a girl in Hawaii who gets mixed up in a robbery in the beach party movie One Way Wahine (1965). She also showed up on lots of TV shows, from The Beverly Hillbillies, My Three Sons, Burke’s Law, Gidget and Batman to Bewitched, Occasional Wife, That Girl, The Monkees and The Odd Couple. In an interview with author Tom Lisanti for his 2007 book, Glamour Girls of Sixties Hollywood, Harmon said her agent told her that she should wear a bikini to her Cool Hand Luke audition for Newman and director Stuart Rosenberg, so she …

James Pergola, who worked on Gentle Ben, Caddyshack and Major League before serving as a cinematographer on the first eight seasons of Baywatch, has died. He was 93. Pergola died of natural causes in hospice care on Feb. 23 in Naples, Florida, his wife of 63 years, Virginia Pergola, told The Hollywood Reporter. His feature credits as a director of photography included Dom DeLuise’s Hot Stuff (1979), Jerry Lewis’ Hardly Working (1980), Nobody’s Perfekt (1981), the Amy Madigan-starring Love Child (1982), Smokey and the Bandit 3 (1983), What Comes Around (1985) and Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach (1988). The respected Pergola shot 145 episodes of the David Hasselhoff-starring Baywatch from its start on NBC in 1989 and through its years as a syndication juggernaut until his retirement in 1998. Robert Hinkle, a onetime rodeo performer from Texas who served as a stunt performer and dialogue coach on the acclaimed films Giant and Hud and wrote, directed and produced a Western of his own, has died. He was 95. Hinkle died March 3 in hospice care in Austin after suffering head, back and neck injuries in a fall in his driveway five days earlier, his daughter, Melody Hinkle, told The Hollywood Reporter. Hinkle also showed up in The Far Horizons (1955), starring Fred MacMurray and Charlton Heston as the explorers Lewis & Clark; in The Conqueror (1956), with John Wayne as Genghis Khan; and in The First Texan (1956), starring Joel McCrea as Sam Houston. Away from the camera, he was the personal manager for actor Chill Wills and singer Marty Robbins and a promoter for daredevil Evel Knievel. After Hinkle had briefly interviewed with George Stevens for a part in Giant (1956), the director asked him to return to his Warner Bros. office in Burbank the next day. Jeremy Larner, whose experience as a speechwriter for 1968 presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy informed his Oscar-winning screenplay for the Robert Redford-starring The Candidate, has died. He was 88. Larner had been ill for some time and died Feb. 24 in a nursing facility in Oakland, California, his son Jesse Larner told The Hollywood Reporter. For his only other produced screenplay, Larner adapted his 1964 novel Drive, He Said, for the audacious basketball-centric 1971 film of the same name that marked the feature directorial debut of Jack Nicholson. Larner had joined McCarthy on the campaign trail in March 1968, with the Minnesota senator, running on a platform to end the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, attempting to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. McCarthy appeared on his way to victory, but following the withdrawal of President Lyndon Johnson from the race and the assassination of fellow candidate Robert F. In the finale of Heated Rivalry, titled “The Cottage,” Russian hockey player Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) tells Canadian fellow athlete Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams), “I’m coming to the cottage,” referring to the lakefront home where Shane invites Ilya to spend the offseason with him. On the surprise-hit show about a secret romance between rival hockey pros, Shane’s cottage offers a sanctuary away from prying eyes, allowing Ilya and Shane to test the waters on bringing their decade-long secret relationship out of the shadows.
