More popular towns like Carmel and Monterey were passed in favor of a stop in Castroville, whose claim to fame was that it was the “Artichoke Center of the World,” replete with the world’s largest sculpture of an artichoke. The image shows a 19-year-old Monroe, her hair brown and in curls, her nose not yet tweaked through rhinoplasty, ascending a rocky cliff edge for the photographer André de Dienes.
