Pope Leo plays tennis religiously as part of an Augustinian devotion to sports and spirituality

PARIS (AP) — When Pope Leo XIV was elected last year and it emerged that he was a tennis player, his love of the sport was quickly celebrated during an audience with top-ranked Jannik Sinner. In the ensuing months, Leo has tried to set aside time in his busy schedule to play the sport every week as part of his Augustinian devotion to physical activity and spirituality. The Rule of St. Augustine, an ancient guide for religious life, highlights the value of good habits. “He’s trying to keep some regularity to his routine that comes from the Rule,” said the Rev. Rob Hagan, Prior of the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova and team chaplain for the men’s basketball and football teams at Villanova University — the pope’s alma mater in Pennsylvania. Leo’s devotion to St. Augustine was evident when he made a pilgrimage during his Africa trip in April to the archaeological ruins in Algeria where the influential 5th century theologian and philosopher lived and died and wrote some of the most important …

‘Masters of the Universe’ Review: Nicholas Galitzine Plays He-Man

‘Masters of the Universe’ Review: Nicholas Galitzine Plays He-Man

The creators of the new Masters of the Universe movie really, really, want to let you know that they’re in on the joke. They know deep down, or at least they should know, that their juvenile material is only suitable for children or overgrown adolescents with a terminal case of childhood nostalgia. So director Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) and his quartet of screenwriters have loaded the proceedings with so much campy, self-referential humor that you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. The film winds up feeling so much like one of those fringe festival musical theater parodies that you find yourself waiting for the characters to burst into song. All of this might go over well with the fanbase who grew up playing with the Mattel toys and subsequently immersed themselves in the myriad product spin-offs, including comic books and an animated television series, that followed in their wake. The packed house at the preview screening, greeted with swag including free tote bags and action figures, certainly roared with approval, …

Inventor plays homemade electromagnetic bagpipes in rock band

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Bagpipes: You either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. But even among the instrument’s diehard defenders, most wouldn’t spend years designing, building, and perfecting an electromagnetic variant. But that’s exactly what one intrepid hobbyist in the United Kingdom has accomplished—although he first began toying with the idea 30 years ago. “This project started back in 1996 when I hacked an Irish Uilleann bagpipe chanter by replacing the cane reed with a homemade reed made from carbon steel,” he explained on his Hackaday project page. Although most famously associated with Scotland, various iterations of bagpipe instruments are documented in regions around the world like North Africa, East Asia, and the Persian Gulf. The Uilleann or Irish pipes date back to the 18th century and operate similarly to their Scottish relatives. To play them, a wearer operates small bellows strapped around the waist to blow relatively dry air through pipe reeds while using them like flutes. Uilleann pipes typically encompass two …

The Man Who Plays Monsters

The Man Who Plays Monsters

The world is about to see a lot more of Lars Eidinger. The German actor is a towering leading man in his own country, whether onstage, were he is a member of the ensemble of Berlin’s Schaubühne theatre, or screen, from playing an introverted husband in a toxic relationship in Maren Ade’s Everyone Else (2009) to, in Matthias Glasner’s Dying (2024), the most turbulent conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic since Cate Blanchett’s Lydia Tár. And he has skirted around the outskirts of international scene. He was the boyfriend of Kristen Stewart’s celebrity employer in Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper (2016), played the main Nazi baddie in Netflix limited series All The Light We Cannot See (2023) and, last year, was the crazed purse thief chased down by George Clooney in Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly.  But soon the 50-year-old character actor will be joining the DCU and plotting to conquer and collect the world as Brainiac, the villain of James Gunn’s Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.  Before that, Cannes is getting a double dose of Lars. He has two films in the festival this year. He plays Klaus Barbie …

Institutional investors boosted holdings of AI infrastructure plays during first quarter

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, May 15 : Institutional investors were eager buyers of stocks in companies whose fate hinges on the rollout and adoption of artificial intelligence during the first quarter of 2026, according to a Reuters overview of filings by nearly 6,000 hedge funds, pension funds, college endowments and other asset managers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. These quarterly 13-F filings, which provide insight into how some major investors reacted to emerging opportunities and new sources of risk or anxiety during the three-month period, show that more than 4,000 of them added to their existing holdings or initiated new positions in a group of nine companies that are big players in the AI infrastructure arena, including Oracle, Arista Networks and Vertiv. Only 146 of those entities sold holdings in the space, or only 2.5 per cent of the investors that have reported their positions to date. Major institutional investors must report any changes made to their portfolio and its composition to the SEC within 45 days of the end of each calendar quarter. …

Gerard Butler plays ‘Slash or Pass’ for ‘Greenland 2: Migration’

Gerard Butler plays ‘Slash or Pass’ for ‘Greenland 2: Migration’

“I did not come here to poke at your trauma,” is not a thing I, Mashable Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko, expected to say to anyone, much less Scottish action star Gerard Butler. When we sat down to celebrate the release of Greenland 2: Migration with a game of “Slash or Pass,” I’d prepped to talk about disaster movies, having no idea how many actual disaster scenarios Butler has faced off-screen. “My life is a disaster,” he laughed while playing the game. But you should watch for yourself to see Butler coolly explain all the stressful scenarios he’s survived. Then you too will know that, when in danger, we should look for Gerard Butler. In our round-up of disaster movies, we touched on Titanic, Airplane!, Geostorm, Twister, The Happening, and of course, Greenland and Greenland 2: Migration. The sequel sees Butler reprise the role of engineer/family man John Garrity, who successfully got his wife and son to safety as the world-threatening comet Clarke barreled to Earth. This time, he’ll face natural disasters and man-made menace to …
