How to turn off the annoying recommended hearing level pop-up on Android

Smartphones come with their own set of minor irritations, whether you use an Android or an iPhone. What counts as annoying is entirely personal. Some people are happy using their device exactly as it arrives, while others start customizing it the moment it is powered on, digging through settings and switching off anything that does not match their preferences. One thing that has consistently bothered me is the pop-up that recommends a hearing level. It is designed as a safety reminder, but when it shows up repeatedly, it stops helping and starts feeling disruptive. After encountering it often enough, I decided to figure out how to disable it. If you share the same frustration, there is a way to turn it off and avoid the interruption altogether, and it’s quite easy. A fan-favorite Armenian pop-up with one of the city’s viral sandwiches launches its first restaurant

A fan-favorite Armenian pop-up with one of the city’s viral sandwiches launches its first restaurant

Juicy, dripping with cheese sauce and so formidable it’s impossible to eat gracefully, one of L.A.’s best pastrami sandwiches has returned. Arthur Grigoryan’s pastrami basturma pita went viral through the many phases of Yerord Mas Bakery & Deli, which started as a pop-up seven years ago. His ode to Armenian cuisine is now open as a counter-service restaurant in Glendale. Grigoryan’s Yerord Mas (also written as III Mas) traces his family’s roots through Armenia, Syria, Egypt and Los Angeles, and pulls its name from the“Third District” neighborhood of Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, where his father grew up. (Stephanie Breijo / Los Angeles Times) Grigoryan and his wife, Takouhi, are serving L.A. spins on the beef tartare-like chi kyuftah, here topped with an Aleppo-pepper and Sichuan chili crisp. There’s more traditional Armenian cuisine too, such as the yogurt kyuftah native to his great-grandparents’ region of Gaziantep — historically called Aintab, now in Turkey. “Our …

Pokémon Pop-Up at London’s Natural History Museum Sells Out Ahead of Opening

The Natural History Museum in London is set to host a Pokémon pop-up shop later this month, an event that has already proved popular enough to sell out timed entry slots well ahead of its opening. According to Time Out London, the pop-up will run from January 26 through April 19 inside the museum’s Cranborne Boutique, following an extension prompted by demand.  The collaboration, themed “Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology,” includes exclusive merchandise designed around the overlap between the Pokémon universe and the museum’s scientific collections, including apparel, stationery, enamel pin sets, art prints, and an oversized “Pikachu at the Museum” collector card distributed with purchases. Related Articles Interest has been intense. Time Out reported that tickets for the pop-up sold out almost immediately, despite the extended run, with only limited opportunities for returns and a small selection of items slated to be made available online through the museum’s shop later in January.  The collaboration reflects a broader trend among major museums seeking to attract younger and more international audiences through brand partnerships tied to global entertainment, fashion, …

I fixed the frustrating “Open with” pop-up on my phone with a free app

I fixed the frustrating “Open with” pop-up on my phone with a free app

The power of Android is choice. Unlike the iPhone, using Android means you can pick from a wide variety of hardware form factors and software experiences. On a more granular level, you can even customize how Android handles certain links within the system, letting you dial in which apps you want to use with specific links. LinkSheet is an open source Android app that gives you back control over how links are handled on your device. Starting with Android 12, Google made it much more difficult to specify link behavior in most cases, forcing only verified apps (like YouTube and Gmail for their respective links) to open. Previously, Android was good at presenting the Open with dialog box that let you specify link behavior. In newer Android versions, that’s mostly gone. But what if you want to customize the behavior yourself so that you can use third-party apps that offer a better experience? With LinkSheet, you can have full control over which apps launch when you open a variety of links. Setting up LinkSheet Set …

Best pop-up chefs and restaurants to try in Los Angeles

There are endless ways to sample the rising talent in L.A.’s food scene. You could make reservations for a flashy new restaurant opening or scope out a taco stand before it goes viral. Pop-ups, often helmed by unknown chefs hoping to break into our city’s competitive dining arena, also serve as a fruitful way to discover new culinary concepts and switch up one’s restaurant routine. The nature of pop-ups is unpredictable, with many chefs cycling through different locations on a weekly basis and concepts changing shape over time. The venues that play host to pop-ups — wine shops, breweries, neighborhood markets and cocktail bars — often use these mobile food concepts to support regular event schedules, including tastings and live DJ performances. With the increased cost of labor and ingredients, pop-ups can also take some financial pressure off of hosts. “We excel as a wine bar and hosting,” says Nicole Dougherty, beverage director and co-owner of Thai Town wine bar Tabula Rasa. “Whether it’s a chef who eventually wants a brick and mortar, or whether …
