Cinema with 94 branches closes flagship venue for last time after 21 years | UK | News

One of Britain’s largest cinema chains, boasting 94 locations nationwide, has shut the doors on a flagship venue for good. Vue has been a fixture in Cardiff city centre for more than two decades, having first opened in 2005 in the heart of the Welsh capital, adjacent to the iconic Principality Stadium and moments from the city’s main railway station.

The company revealed earlier in June that closure was imminent and confirmed it was in discussions with employees regarding potential redundancies. No specific date was given at the time, but a statement read: “We can confirm that our site at Stadium Plaza will be closing later this month. We are consulting with our Cardiff colleagues, who are our priority, and until this point, we will continue to provide cinemagoers in Cardiff the very best big screen experience.”

The cinema screened its final film on June 25, with listings subsequently removed from the website, where a notice now states: “The credits may be rolling in Cardiff but Vue is still open in Cwmbran, Merthyr and Swansea.”

The closure comes as this summer’s biggest blockbusters hit screens, including Toy Story 5, Disclosure Day, Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe, Obsession and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

With 94 sites, Vue ranks as the UK’s third-largest cinema operator, trailing Odeon and Cineworld. Across its estate, the chain operates a total of 916 screens, reports The Mirror.

The Cardiff venue, positioned along the River Taff, was renowned for its panoramic city vistas and featured seven screens.
