Iran reopens Strait of Hormuz, but Trump says blockade on Iranian ships and ports will stay in force

BEIRUT (AP) — Iran said Friday it fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels, but U.S. President Donald Trump said the American blockade on Iranian ships and ports “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with the U.S., including on its nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X that the crucial waterway, through which about 20% of the world’s oil is shipped, was now fully open to commercial vessels, as a 10-day truce between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon appeared to hold. Araghchi said ships will use routes designated by the Islamic Republic in coordination with Iranian authorities, suggesting Iran planned to retain some level of control over the channel. It was not clear if vessels would have to pay tolls. A data firm, Kpler, said movement through the strait remained confined to corridors requiring Iran’s approval. Trump initially celebrated the Iranian announcement, posting on social media that the strait was “fully open and ready for full passage.” But minutes later, he issued …

Iran mocks EU calls to reopen Strait of Hormuz – POLITICO

Western leaders have urged the Iranian regime to reopen the waterway, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits. Prolonged closure is driving up global oil prices and damaging economic growth prospects across the EU.   Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, wrote on X that “under international law, transit through waterways like the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free of charge.” But the Iranian regime poured scorn on Kallas’ assertion. “Oh, that ‘international law’?! The one that the EU dusts off to lecture others while quietly green-lighting a U.S.-Israeli war of aggression — and looking the other way on atrocities against Iranians?!” Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson at the Iranian foreign ministry, wrote on X. In a stinging rebuke, Baqaei said that “no rule of international law forbids Iran, the coastal State, from taking necessary measures to stop the Strait of Hormuz being used for waging military aggression against Iran.” He added that “unconditional transit passage” in Hormuz is not possible after “U.S./Israeli aggression brought U.S. military assets into …

Tehran shuts Hormuz again as Iranian gunboats fire on tanker – POLITICO

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the Iranian navy was ready to inflict “new bitter defeats” on the U.S. and Israel, in a message read on Iranian state TV. The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that two IRGC gunboats had opened fire on a tanker 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman without issuing a radio challenge. The vessel’s captain reported the incident to UKMTO; no injuries were reported and the tanker was said to be safe. In a separate incident, an unknown projectile hit a container vessel, damaging some of the containers, the UKMTO said. The renewed closure of the strait came after U.S. President Donald Trump said the American naval blockade of Iranian ports “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with Washington, including on its nuclear program. Iranian foreign ministry earlier rejected any possibility of transferring Iran’s enriched uranium to another country, stressing that such an option has never been considered. Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei on Friday emphasized that Iran’s enriched uranium will under no circumstances be transferred elsewhere, rejecting a suggestion …

Iran closes Strait of Hormuz again over US blockade of its ports | US-Israel war on Iran News

Iran says it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again, calling the decision a response to a continued blockade of its ports by the United States. The Iranian military on Saturday said control of the strategic waterway, through which 20 percent of globally traded oil transits, has “returned to its previous state”, with reports saying Iranian gunboats fired at a merchant vessel as it attempted to ‌cross. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list The closure of the strait came hours after it was reopened, with more than a dozen commercial ships passing through the waterway, after a US-mediated 10-day ceasefire deal was reached between Israel and Lebanon. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday said in a statement, cited by Iranian state media, that the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports represented “acts of piracy and maritime theft”, adding that the control over Hormuz is “under the strict management and control of the armed forces”. “Until the US restores full freedom of navigation for vessels travelling from Iran to their destinations and …

Sahar Al Attar | Afp | Getty Images President Donald Trump on Monday rolled out a “blockade” of access to Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf to great fanfare, announcing his intentions on social media and then proclaiming it in motion at his appointed deadline. But what exactly does choking access to the region’s oil exports via the Strait of Hormuz mean and what does Trump want to accomplish? A former Biden-era Pentagon official said the U.S. is trying to turn the tables on Iran, which has blockaded the strait for weeks during the U.S.-Israeli war with the country, creating a bottleneck that roiled global markets and strained the economy. Experts say the goal of the blockade is to convince Iran’s leaders to back down and acquiesce to U.S. demands to end the war and restore freedom of navigation to the strait. “The administration seems to be …
