Textiles in Porto, Portugal : NPR

Textiles in Porto, Portugal : NPR

Linen lines the lanes of Porto’s old town. Up high, fresh laundry quivers in the breeze like bunting, pegged precariously to twine stretched taut between windows. And at street level, linen scarves, cotton aprons and tea towels adorn the entrances to souvenir shops, many of which are run by Bangladeshi immigrants whose home country shares Portugal’s rich tradition of textile manufacturing. As I thumb the tea towels, I’m struck by stark sentimentality. I think of the drawer of tea towels at home, a motley mix of mementos from my own vacations and those I’ve inadvertently inherited. From William Morris-patterned linens to a faded rendering of a map marking Hadrian’s Wall, to a cloth bearing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and another claiming life begins at 40. Each time I take a fresh tea towel to dry dishes, I think about past conversations at various kitchen sinks with those who have held and folded these very cloths. Now, as my child helps to dry while I wash up, we’re wrapped in the comfort of these …

Prince Edward spills Windsor Castle secret as Portugal tour begins | Royal | News

Sophie and Edward pictured today (Image: GETTY) The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s three-day tour of Portugal began in classic fashion yesterday as the couple took their seats on one of Lisbon’s iconic yellow trams. After an almost 10-minute ride through the city, the Duke showed off his linguistic skills, thanking the driver with a quick “obrigado” as he and the Duchess arrived at their stop. The pair kicked off their whistlestop tour earlier in the day at the Portuguese National Archive to unveil the first display of the original English and Portuguese copies of the Treaty of Windsor, together side by side for the first time since 1386. “The Portuguese are better at looking after their documents!”, the Duke said with a hearty laugh, noting the stains that have appeared on the English version of the treaty over the last 640 years. Adding with a flourish that it “is always important to read the fine print”, Edward also took a special moment to thank the people of Portugal for their help in restoring Windsor …

Portugal World Cup 2026 guide: Fixtures, prediction, key player and odds

For a country with just over 10 million people, Portugal have been a constant presence amongst the elite of international football, and that is no different heading into this summer’s World Cup. Portuguese football has become almost synonymous with Cristiano Ronaldo since the Euros in 2004, with the legendary attacker set to compete in his 12th international tournament and sixth World Cup. Head coach Roberto Martinez must manage his aging star’s ego when it conflicts with what is best for the team as a whole. He has shown he can make it work with success in the Nations League in 2025, but the last World Cup was an example of Portugal forcing the ball to Ronaldo as they were shocked by Morocco at the quarter final stage. Now even older and further from the peak of his powers at 41, this is likely Ronaldo’s last chance of glory at the World Cup. Can Portugal find a way to make it work in North America? Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, Jose Sa, Rui Silva, Ricardo Velho Defenders: Diogo …

AfD, Vox mingle with ex-US Border Patrol chief, white nationalist leader at ‘remigration summit’  – POLITICO

Two years later, a confident Sellner made himself available to journalists for interviews at the remigration summit, dwelling on concepts that he says are now going mainstream. “We have a very neurotic relationship to our own ethnicity, our own ethno-cultural identity and I think we need to overcome that,” Sellner told reporters at the summit, calling on Europeans to overcome their “guilt complex” and “self-loathing” stemming from “post-war consensus.” At least three AfD politicians attended the event, including Kay Gottschalk, a member of the Bundestag and one of the party’s cofounders. Gottschalk said he was there “to listen” as “a visitor.” Lena Kotré, an AfD member and representative in the Brandenburg state legislature, spoke on stage with Sven Tritschler, a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia parliament, also in attendance. Vox MPs Rocío de Meer and Carlos Quero featured on the summit’s speakers list. Activist Sammy Woodhouse, a supporter of U.K. right-wing party Restore Britain, was also among the speakers. Tensions emerged when reporters who had been accredited to cover the event were not allowed in …

Europe sweats as ‘heat dome’ causes record May temperatures – POLITICO

Multiple cities in the west of France are set to break May temperature records by several degrees, with Nantes expecting 35C heat on Monday — which would break a 2017 May temperature record by nearly three degrees.   The UK’s weather agency warned of “a notable heatwave” with highs of up to 33 degrees on Monday, which would break May temperature records for the country, while Belgium is set for highs of up to 31C. A “heat dome” is responsible for the current high temperatures, France’s Météo-France weather agency said. Warm air moving up from Northern Africa has become trapped under a high-pressure system over Western Europe. The effect is similar to that of a lid on a pot, with warm air forced downward and baking affected regions with prolonged, blistering heat. Météo-France noted the phenomenon is becoming more common as a result of climate change. “We expect to see such heatwaves more and more frequently,” the agency said. “They will occur earlier and become more intense.” The UK has issues heat health alerts across …

Von der Leyen and Costa pick their Eurovision favorites – POLITICO

The song that “moves me the most,” the German politician went on, “is ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’ by Céline Dion, which won [for Switzerland] in 1988. What a voice, what emotion.” And, from the more recent entries, “I think the energy in ‘Euphoria’ by Loreen in 2012 is unmatched!” The song won for Sweden, and Loreen went on to win the contest again in 2023. A spokesperson for European Council President António Costa said that his favorite Eurovision entry is Portugal’s 1974 chanson “E depois do adeus” by Paulo de Carvalho. While the song failed to win the contest, it became the anthem for the Carnation Revolution just three weeks later, ushering in the country’s democratic transition. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas did not respond to a request for their favorite Eurovision songs. Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, the participation of the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine in Eurovision has been seen as a symbol of the continent’s unity. Kyiv’s 2016 …

In September 1507 the Portuguese conquistador Afonso de Albuquerque sailed his small fleet to a point off the coast of Hormuz Island, in the narrow bottleneck that provides access to the Persian Gulf. Negotiations between the Portuguese and the independent Kingdom of Hormuz broke down quickly, and the small tributary state of Persia sent hundreds of oar vessels and dhows to attack the intruders. In the ensuing naval battle, Albuquerque’s advantage in heavy artillery enabled his fleet to sink most of the opposing ships. When the white flag was flown over Hormuz, its teenaged king, Seyf Ad-Din, promised the Portuguese a large tribute and permitted them to construct a fort on his island. For the Hormuzians, submission to the military protection of a distant maritime power was the price to pay for continued prosperity. For Portugal, Hormuz was the latest node in the global empire of maritime transit that it was establishing from the Strait of Gibraltar to Malacca. Five hundred years later, maritime trade continues to be the lifeblood of our world economy, and …
