Timothy A.clary | AFP | Getty Images The Trump administration was sued Tuesday over the abrupt removal of the Pride rainbow flag last week from the Stonewall National Monument in New York City, at the site of the 1969 uprising that ignited the gay rights movement in the United States. The lawsuit, filed by a group of LGBTQ+ advocates and a Greenwich Village community group, said the federal government claimed that Department of the Interior rules bar the flying of anything but the U.S. flags, DOI flags, and the POW/MIA flags in national parks. “In fact, the opposite is true: The policies the government says require removing the Pride flag expressly permit the [National Park Service] to fly other flags that provide historical context to national monuments — which is precisely what the NPS …

Ice hockey-Italy exit with pride rather than disappointment as Clara shines in goal

Ice hockey-Italy exit with pride rather than disappointment as Clara shines in goal

MILAN, Feb 17 : Italy’s Olympic ice hockey adventure is over after defeat to Switzerland in the men’s playoff round on Tuesday, but there was more pride than disappointment for the hosts whose goaltender Damian Clara attracted attention for some superb displays. The Italians were always up against it, a roster without an NHL player competing in a tournament filled with the elite league’s top athletes. They more than held their own despite losing to Sweden and Slovakia and, after getting steamrolled by champions Finland 11-0 in their final group game, they came out fighting against the Swiss before ultimately bowing out. “It’s a disappointment in the sense that we want to win the game because we’re competitive,” Italy captain Thomas Larkin said.  “We’re hockey players, we want to win every game. I wouldn’t say it’s a disappointment on the whole. I think I’m quite the opposite and very proud of our team tournament and what we showed with probably the smallest hockey country here, as far as the number of hockey players. “The disappointment is …

Over the weekend, the Trump administration removed the rainbow Pride flag that flew from New York City’s Stonewall National Monument to gay rights, reports the Washington Post. The divisive move was traced to a January 21 federal order by the Interior Department, which states that National Park Service (NPS) property should only fly the US flag or flags with official government logos. Reactions have been swift as outrage grows. “They cannot erase our history,” said Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal (D) in a social media post. The memorial to the 1969 gay rights demonstrations at the Greenwich Village bar following a police raid became the country’s first national monument to the LGBTQ community when it was erected in 2016 under Obama. Last year, the NPS also removed references to transgender and queer activists on the park’s website. “New Yorkers are right to be outraged,” said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D), who represents New York. “But if there’s one thing I …

Biathlon-Greenland siblings putting pride before protest at Winter Olympics

Jan 31 : After a whirlwind few weeks, the brother-and-sister biathlon team of Sondre and Ukaleq Slettemark have put politics aside to focus on making Greenland proud at the Milano Cortina Olympics. The pair have received an enormous amount of media attention after criticising U.S. President Donald Trump for his desire to take over Greenland, but now they want to focus on showing the best side of their nation at the Olympics.  They will represent the Commonwealth of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands at the Games, which start on February 6. “I think we’re both very proud to show that Greenland and Denmark are standing strong together,” Ukaleq, 24, told Reuters. “I agree – normally, we race just for Greenland with our own side, but now in the Olympics, it’s going to be under the Danish flag,” Sondre, who is three years younger, added. The two spoke to Reuters over Zoom from their training base in Obertilliach, Austria, not far from where the biathlon competitions at the Games will take place in northern Italy. …

Budapest mayor fined for organizing banned Pride march – POLITICO

“The prosecution has filed charges and wants to impose a financial penalty on me without a court hearing, simply because we held the largest freedom march of the past decades,” Karácsony said via email. “They do not even want a trial, because they do not want to face it.” Karácsony, a Green politician and strong opponent of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, opposed the ban and invited people to join the 2025 Budapest Pride rally. The event took place in June, joined by over 100,000 participants, including several European politicians. Two months later, Karácsony was questioned by Hungary’s state police. Last December, he told his followers in a social media post he would face government charges for the case. The event qualified as an assembly outlawed under the new amendment, the prosecutors argue. By proceeding with the event, Budapest’s mayor is accused of committing the “misdemeanor of violating freedom of association and assembly,” the federal prosecutor office’s statement says. Karácsony is one of the ’10 to Watch’ in the POLITICO 28: Class of 2026. The Hungarian Prosecution Service couldn’t …
