Trump DOJ ‘lawfare’ fund temporarily blocked by judge as suit proceeds

A federal judge in Virginia on Friday temporarily blocked the Department of Justice from taking any further action to create or disburse money from its so-called Anti-Weaponization Fund as one of three lawsuits challenging it proceeds. Judge Leonie Brinkema said she would hold a hearing on June 12 in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on whether to maintain the injunction against the DOJ’s $1.8 billion fund. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche earlier this month said he was creating that fund as part of a settlement of a $10 billion lawsuit by President Donald Trump against the Internal Revenue Service for the leak of his tax records by an IRS employee. Blanche is Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer. Hours after Brinkema’s order a judge overseeing a lawsuit challenging the fund in Washington, D.C., federal court scheduled a hearing for Wednesday on the request by the advocacy group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington to issue a temporary restraining order that would block the DOJ’s fund from operating as that suit plays out. The fund is …

Frozen proceeds of Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea FC sale ‘investigated in Jersey’ | UK News

The frozen proceeds of Roman Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea are being investigated in Jersey over whether they “amount to the proceeds of crime”, according to accounts published by the company through which the Russian owned the football club. This relates to investigations into the sanctioned oligarch and is unconnected to the new owners who bought Chelsea in 2022 but further complicates moves to release the cash to help Ukrainians. Mr Abramovich, who has previously denied wrongdoing linked to his finances and close connections to President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the UK and Jersey governments in 2022 at the start of Russia‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in a targeting of oligarchs. That led to the enforced sale of his Premier League asset and he has remained in dispute with UK governments over how much of the cash goes to humanitarian causes and who receives it. Success! Manx bill to end bishop’s vote in legislature proceeds

The National Secular Society has hailed a historic vote in the Isle of Man’s parliament to end its bishop’s ex officio voting powers as “a victory for fairness, equality and democracy”. The Anglican bishop of Sodor of Man sits and votes by right in the upper chamber of Tynwald (the Manx parliament), the Legislative Council (LegCo). Today, LegCo voted 5 to 3 in favour of a bill to strip the bishop of voting rights. Incumbent bishop Patricia Hillas used her voted to oppose the motion. The bill now moves to its final legislative stage on Tuesday November 11. An amendment may be brought to delay the removal of the bishop’s vote until the end of the Hillas’ tenure. Hillas is understood to oppose such an amendment, arguing that any change should take place without postponement. Twenty-six Church of England bishops also sit by right in the Westminster parliament. The National Secular Society, which campaigns to ensure no clergy are given privileged positions in Parliament, engaged with both houses of Tynwald throughout the bill’s journey to …
