Project Hail Mary snatched the best of show prize at the 2026 Golden Trailer Awards for its trailer entitled “Chance” from Amazon MGM Studios and Wild Card Creative. The Golden Trailer Awards celebrate the best in motion picture and digital marketing previews, which includes trailers, commercials and posters. The 2026 awards ceremony was held Thursday night at the Saban Theatre in Beverly, where Morgan Jay served as the night’s host. “Project Hail Mary’s “Chance” is a master class in everything that can make a trailer effective, from spectacular visuals to arresting sound design to emotional music choices to disarming humor,” said Evelyn Brady, Golden Trailer Awards executive director. “This trailer and the others for Project Hail Mary clearly connected with audiences, helping to make the film a global box office hit. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is bringing a much-needed spring bloom to the box office, where the family pic is now on course to collect a record $370.7 million in its global debut from 80 markets, the biggest showing since James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opened over Christmas 2025. And it is by far the top opening of 2026 among Hollyood titles. Universal’s Saturday estimates shows the sequel on course to open to a mammoth $188.6 domestically, including a three-day weekend gross of $129.4 million, one of the best showings of all time for the Easter corridor, not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, it is headed for estimated foreign opening of $182 million, including previews, for a mammoth global launch not that far behind the first film. Opening over the same Easter corridor in 2023, the first Mario Bros. Amazon’s bet on “Project Hail Mary” has paid off handsomely, with the film recently surpassing “Creed III” to become the company’s highest grossing movie ever. And it was a big bet, with a reported budget of around $200 million. That’s a big price tag for any film, but especially one that’s not a sequel or part of an existing franchise. Instead, it’s based on a bestselling science fiction novel by Andy Weir, whose book “The Martian” was adapted into a successful film a decade ago.  And that’s not the only thing that makes “Project Hail Mary” feel unconventional. Bestselling writer Andy Weir criticized modern Trek shows while on the Critical Drinker podcast last week, and even revealed he pitched a Trek show that was shot down by Paramount. Project Hail Mary continues its out-of-this-world box office performance. After earning $14.6 million on Friday, the Ryan Gosling-led movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi epic is on course to decline a scant 34 percent to $53.1 million to boast the best hold in recent memory for movies that opened in the same range, including Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (54 percent) and 2024’s Dune: Part 2 (44 percent). That would put Project Hail Mary‘s worldwide cume well north of $200 million through Sunday, including an anticipated $137 million domestically and more than $100 million at the international box office. Opening well ahead of expectations last weekend, the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed Project Hail Mary blasted off with a domestic launch of $80.6 million, the best showing of the year to date and the second-best in a decade for a non-sequel or franchise title behind Oppenheimer ($52.5 million). In the early weeks of the pandemic, Ryan Gosling received the manuscript for Project Hail Mary a full year before The Martian author Andy Weir published the sci-fi space novel. The actor was hooked. Just as the world was going into lockdown and facing an existential crisis, came along the story of a scientist and an alien nicknamed Rocky working together, step by step, to stop stars from dying across the galaxy. The timing couldn’t be more opportune. Gosling snapped up the rights to star in and produce a movie adaptation of Weir’s novel. He brought on former Sony studio chief Amy Pascal to help produce and assemble the key pieces in spring 2020, including hiring Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct, with Drew Goddard later hired to write. Filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s golden touch continues with space epic Hail Project Mary, starring Ryan Gosling. Friday’s opening-day gross of $33.1 million, including $12 million in previews, puts the film on course for a better-than-expected domestic opening of $77 million-plus, according to Amazon MGM Studios. Only three non-sequel, non-franchise films have opened above $50 million in the post-pandemic era: Oppenheimer, F1: The Movie and It Ends With Us. And only two, Oppenheimer and It, crossed $70 million. In terms of the genre itself, Project Hail Mary would share rarefied air with Interstellar’s opening in 2014. Project Hail Mary was looking at a debut of $50 million-plus heading into the weekend. Critics and audiences are embracing the warm-hearted, adventure-action movie in almost equal measure, which is the sweet spot for every studio.
