Project Hail Mary delays streaming release after record-breaking box office run

After enjoying huge success at the box office and a wave of very positive reviews, Project Hail Mary has had its streaming premiere date pushed back so the film can enjoy an extended theatrical run. The film – which stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – is currently the third-highest grossing release of 2026 globally, behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Chinese film Pegasus 3. Meanwhile, it has also become Amazon MGM Studios highest-grossing release of all time, so there’s perhaps no surprise that the studio is keen to further maximise its success. Sam Altman’s project World looks to scale its human verification empire. First stop: Tinder.

At a trendy venue near the San Francisco pier, Sam Altman’s verification project World celebrated its next evolution and rapid expansion of its ambitions.  And it’s starting with Tinder. Tools for Humanity, the company behind the World project, announced Friday plans to integrate its verification tech into dating apps, event and concert ticketing systems, business organizations, email, and other arenas of public life. “The world is getting close to very powerful AI, and this is doing a lot of wonderful things,” said Altman, speaking before a packed crowd at The Midway. “We are also heading to a world now where there’s going to be more stuff generated by AI than by humans,” he added. “I’m sure many of you where you’re like, ‘Am I interacting with an AI or a person, or how much of each, and how do I know?” World (formerly Worldcoin) distinguishes itself from many of its ID verification peers by offering the ability to verify that a real, living human is using a digital service while still protecting that person’s anonymity. …

The US’s largest clean energy project is generating power [update]

Photo: Vestas Vestas finished installing its wind turbines at Pattern Energy’s SunZia, the largest clean energy project in the US, last month, and the wind farm has now come online. April 17, 2026: SunZia Wind has begun testing its turbines as it nears the start of commercial operations in Q2 2025, E&E reported yesterday. Grid Status first reported the news. Neither the project developer, Pattern Energy, nor the California grid operator has publicized the milestone, and it’s unclear exactly how much power is being transmitted at this time. On April 13, CAISO, California’s grid, sent a transmission control agreement letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission about Sun Zia. Trump rails against court decision that once again stalls his White House ballroom project : NPR

Work continues on the construction of the ballroom at the White House, Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Washington, where the East Wing once stood. Rod Lamkey/AP hide caption toggle caption Rod Lamkey/AP WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump railed against a federal judge’s decision on Thursday that continues to block above-ground construction of a $400 million White House ballroom, allowing only below-ground work on a bunker and other “national security facilities” at the site. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon’s latest ruling comes in response to an appeals court’s instruction to clarify an earlier decision on the 90,000-square-foot (8,400-square-meter) ballroom planned for the site where it demolished the East Wing of the White House. Trump on social media called Leon, who was nominated to the bench by Republican President George W. Bush, a “Trump Hating” judge who “has gone out of his way to undermine National Security, and to make sure that this Great Gift to America gets delayed, or doesn’t get built.” The administration filed a notice that it will ask the U.S. Court of …

Luma launches AI-powered production studio with faith-focused Wonder Project

AI video generation startup Luma has launched Innovative Dreams, a production company built in partnership with Wonder Project, a streaming service that produces religious films and TV on Amazon Prime.  The tie-up’s first show will be called “The Old Stories: Moses,” starring British actor Ben Kingsley and set to launch this spring on Prime Video.  “Innovative Dreams is a production services company where seasoned filmmakers from Director Jon Erwin’s team and Luma’s creative technologists work with great studios and filmmakers to help them realize ambitious ideas,” Luma said Thursday in a social media post.  The company envisages creative teams collaborating in real time with Luma Agents to make changes to sets, props, and lighting, as well as bring in footage of human actors. Luma Agents are the company’s recently launched tools designed to handle end-to-end creative work across text, image, video, and audio. “This is a significant improvement over the current virtual production and performance capture processes where things come together only in post,” Luma’s post said. “This is the leverage of AI — not …

The stunning physics of Project Hail Mary go back to ancient China

The stunning physics of Project Hail Mary go back to ancient China

Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary Jonathan Olley / Amazon Content Services LLC Part-way through watching Project Hail Mary in a full IMAX theatre, I let out a solitary gasp. Wondering why nobody else was shocked about what I had just seen, I realised it was because I am a physicist. Let me explain, with an extremely mild spoiler: there’s a scene in the middle of the film where the Hail Mary spaceship suddenly lurches forward. Ryan Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, is not strapped into his seat and his head smacks sideways into the screens in front of him. If this had been real, he would have certainly died. Of course, I see films all the time where people get thrown around and punched in the face and dropped from heights that would shatter their bodies, but they survive. Usually, I am able to suspend disbelief. What made this viewing experience different was the careful attention to getting the science of motion in outer space right. Instead of asking their science …

X-SEED Project: Supercritical membrane-less electrolysis

X-SEED Project: Supercritical membrane-less electrolysis

A European consortium is advancing electrolysis with a membrane-less electrolyser to improve renewable hydrogen production, supporting Europe’s climate-neutral energy goals X-SEED is a European research initiative developing supercritical, membrane-less electrolysis technology to advance renewable hydrogen production. The consortium brings together industrial and research partners to improve the efficiency, durability, and cost competitiveness of next-generation electrolysers. Why this matters now? Electrolysis currently accounts for only about 0.1% of approximately 100 million tonnes produced each year worldwide. The vast majority of hydrogen still comes from fossil-based sources, in so-called ‘grey’ hydrogen production, mainly using natural gas and coal without CO₂ capture rather than from green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis. By the end of 2024, the European Union had installed around 340 MW, far below the 6 GW target set in the European Union Hydrogen Strategy of 2020. This 6 GW target was intended to produce up to 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, but in practice, the installed capacity only reached around 5-6% of the goal. How will we get there? X-SEED’s membrane-less electrolysis …

Project 2025 Author Paul Dans Drops Primary Challenge to Lindsey Graham in South Carolina

Project 2025 Author Paul Dans Drops Primary Challenge to Lindsey Graham in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Paul Dans, a chief architect of Project 2025, has shuttered his Republican primary challenge to Sen. Lindsey Graham in South Carolina, in a contest set to test the loyalties of President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement in this year’s midterm election. Dans pulled out Friday, the last day to remove his name from ballots before the state’s primary on June 9. Trump — who long ago endorsed Graham, among his top congressional allies — reacted to the announcement with a social media post suggesting that Tucker Carlson’s endorsement of Dans had been the “KISS OF DEATH” for his campaign. Trump and Carlson have been feuding over the Iran war, which the former Fox News star called “absolutely disgusting and evil.” Dans denied his decision to withdraw had anything to do with Carlson. Dans said he was endorsing another Republican in the contest, appliance business owner Mark Lynch. In another social media post, Trump said Lynch “would be a DISASTER for the Republican Party” if elected. Dans rose to prominence as …

‘Project Hail Mary’ explores space science. How plausible is it? : NPR

‘Project Hail Mary’ explores space science. How plausible is it? : NPR

In the film Project Hail Mary, middle school teacher Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) goes on a interstellar journey and conducts lab science in space in a quest to save humanity. Jonathan Olley/Amazon MGM Studios hide caption toggle caption Jonathan Olley/Amazon MGM Studios This story contains major spoilers. The film Project Hail Mary has just blasted past the milestone of $400 million revenue globally and is generating early Oscar buzz. And the film’s depiction of interstellar travel and extraterrestrial life has reinvigorated the genre of science fiction and brought the wonder and “amaze! amaze!” of science into people’s consciousness. So how much of that science is really plausible? In the film, middle school teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is recruited to help save Earth because of his history as a cell biologist with some iconoclastic ideas about life in the universe. During an emergency mission to a distant solar system, he must figure out how to stop a cosmic microbe from devouring Earth’s sun. In the wake of the simultaneous excitement over the ARTEMIS …
