Sex Pistols announce Anarchy in the UK tour to celebrate 50 years of punk

Dubbed ‘The Anarchy In The UK’ tour, the legendary group will be joined by musician Frank Carter. The celebratory series of concerts marks 50 years since their seminal track’s release, with stops planned for London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dublin. The band will feature guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and bassist Glen Matlock for the December run. Kicking off at Dublin’s 3 Arena on 7 December, the tour then heads to Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange on 9 December, followed by Glasgow’s O2 Academy on 10 December. In the early 1980s, I was a college student, visiting my parents for the weekend, staying up late and taking advantage of their large color television, flipping through channels and looking for something worthwhile to watch. flip flip flip “Wait, is that . . .” — no, it couldn’t be! — but it was. I picked up the cordless phone and dialed a friend. “Are you watching TV? I just saw Paul Simonon. And half of the Sex Pistols! Turn on Night Flight!” Once I got over my excitement at the presence of punk rock musicians on my television, the rest of the film pulled me in like a tractor beam because there were GIRLS PLAYING PUNK ROCK on the screen in front of me. The 69-year-old former Sex Pistols frontman was unmasked during Saturday night’s episode of the ITV singing competition, after losing a sing-off against fellow contestant Monkey Business. The show sees celebrities perform while wearing elaborate costumes, with their identities kept secret. The sports day-themed instalment saw cricket legend Freddie Flintoff join the regular panel of Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall. Flintoff made an immediate impact, correctly identifying Lydon as the glittery purple Yak following his rendition of Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical”. Lydon described the experience as “unbelievable” and that he was “amazed” that Flintoff was able to guess his identity so quickly.
