Frédéric Vasseur, the Ferrari team principal, will miss qualifying in Monaco on Saturday after being taken unwell. Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are both expected to challenge for pole position, but Vasseur, 58, is being kept “under observation” at a local medical facility in Monaco.  It is unclear whether the Frenchman will be back in time for Sunday’s grand prix. No further medical information was provided by the team, who merely said in a statement on Saturday morning that they wished their boss a “speedy recovery” and looked forward to seeing him back at the track “soon”. Vasseur will miss the most important qualifying session of the season, given how difficult it is to overtake around Monaco’s tight, twisty streets during the actual race.  Moreover, it is a qualifying session for which his team are highly fancied. A competitor “has died following an incident at Station corner on the NW200 course during this morning’s Superbike qualifying session,” said a statement from the race organisers, Coleraine and District Motor Club. The victim’s family requested that the rider is not named, but gave their approval for the event – which finishes on Saturday – to continue, the statement added. The on-course incident is the 20th fatality associated with the event, and the first since 2016, when Malachi Mitchell-Thomas died in a Supertwins race. The 48-team field for FIFA ’s biggest ever World Cup is complete after a qualifying process that spanned more than two and a half years. Iraq edged Bolivia 2-1 in an intercontinental playoff at Monterrey in northern Mexico on Tuesday to secure the 48th spot, hours after Bosnia and Herzegovina upset four-time champion Italy on penalties in European playoffs. In front of a crowd of about 30,000, both sides struggled to keep sustained possession early on, with clear-cut chances proving difficult to come by. The Lions looked to rely on the flanks to provide service for striker Ikhsan Fandi and Ryhan Stewart did just that with 20 minutes played, but his cross was pushed clear by Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma. And just as it looked as if the Lions were starting to look ponderous, they got their goal. A raking cross-field switch from Irfan Fandi found Glenn Kweh and while his shot was pushed clear, the onrushing Harhys slammed home for his first international goal. But the physical away side was not without threat as loose play from Singapore saw possession lost in a dangerous area. A superb block from Safuwan Baharudin saw the first attempt saved, but there were strong calls for a penalty after he appeared to have caught a Bangladesh attacker charging onto the rebound.  Referee Benjamin Abraham however, was unmoved. MELBOURNE, March 7 : George Russell took pole position and teammate Kimi Antonelli locked up the front row as Mercedes confirmed their off-season promise by dominating qualifying at Formula One’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Saturday. Briton Russell lapped Albert Park’s street circuit in one minute, 18.518 seconds, a mark that was 0.293 seconds ahead of Italian Antonelli, who came back from a huge crash in the final free practice earlier in the day.
