The British royal family turned out in droves Saturday for the intimate nuptials of Harriet Sperling and Peter Phillips. The couple, who met through their teenage daughters two years ago, exchanged vows in front of friends and family including Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh at All Saints Church in Kemble, Gloucester on Saturday, June 6. The late queen purchased Gatcombe Park in 1976 as a wedding present for Anne after she married her first husband, Mark Phillips. (According to author Geoffrey Sanders, the estate of more than 500 acres cost about 500,000 British pounds at the time. Its previous owners later said that the royal family was a tough negotiator on the purchase price.) Rebuilt in the 1820s, the Georgian mansion required significant renovations to be inhabitable, but the stonework and floor plan of the main structure and its glass-walled conservatory remained largely intact. Anne used to be a professional equestrian and even competed in the three-day event at the 1976 Olympics. Last year King Charles III stripped Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of his official titles, meaning that he could no longer consider himself a prince. The move was the most severe consequence the king could impose without the involvement of parliament—but it didn’t end public outcry about Mountbatten-Windsor’s presence in the Epstein files, particularly after he made another appearance in a cache released this past winter. In February, following his appearance in the Epstein files, Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in connection with an investigation into suspicion of misconduct in public office. (Mountbatten-Windsor has previously denied any wrongdoing, and he has not been charged with a crime.) Now the inquiry into Mountbatten-Windsor seems to be widening. Nearly 15 years after Simpson wore the pearl earrings to her husband’s funeral, they fell into the hands of another headline-making couple. Simpson died on April 24, 1986 and some of her possessions were auctioned off by Sotheby’s in Geneva. Enter Calvin Klein, creator of the first designer jeans, who purchased the earrings, necklace, and a pearl pendant for his second wife, photographer Kelly Klein, totaling $1.18 million. Kelly later debuted the pieces to attend the 1989 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. In 2007, twenty years after acquiring the pieces, the now-divorced Klein couple put the pieces up for sale at another Sotheby’s auction. “The first time I wore them, it created a lot of drama. It’s not unusual for letters written by Princess Diana to find its way to auction, for as we well know, interest in the late royal remains high. The most recent correspondence to find itself under the hammer is a letter written shortly after her marriage to then then-prince, now King Charles III in 1981.
