The Story of Jacqueline de Ribes, France’s Most Elegant Woman, Whom Valentino Called “the Last Queen of Paris”

The Story of Jacqueline de Ribes, France’s Most Elegant Woman, Whom Valentino Called “the Last Queen of Paris”

She developed a unique habit of cutting up her haute couture dresses and reworking them into entirely new creations, experimenting with altered waistlines, unexpected proportions, and novel silhouettes. In the 1950s, she met Oleg Cassini in New York. The designer described her as “elegant to the point of distraction.” Sensing she was a frustrated designer, he hired her to create dresses in muslin for him, which she did in the attic of her home with the help of a young, and then unknown, Italian assistant who created sketches for her: Valentino. It was Valentino who later bestowed the title of “the last queen of Paris” on de Ribes, struck by her “extraordinary Persian-inspired chic” and her diva-like movements. When the designer later founded his own fashion house, de Ribes became one of his first and most important clients and a constant muse. Jacqueline de Ribes in 1980. Photo: Getty. At the palace, the team is trained, and everyone has the right tools and time to do their job… They learned how to lift things safely and how to be confident when they were around the Royal Collection. When you’re cleaning historic areas such as palaces and castles, you have to make sure you don’t overdo it. We had a daily routine that ensured we didn’t over-clean everything. What is the royal protocol for dealing with ironing and maintaining perfectly crisp sheets without using harsh, eco-unfriendly chemicals? Saleem, London Much of what would be classed as royal protocol are things we would do in our own homes. For linen, you need to treat it well and look after it by not washing it at too high a temperature or using too much detergent. Make sure the products you’re using are …

The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon

The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon

A girl of eleven stands in a boat in Clew Bay on a clear afternoon and tells her father a storm is coming. He can see nothing on the horizon. She cannot explain it either, only that the water is too cold and too dark, the air smells like a freshly turned garden row, and somewhere past the edge of hearing there are horses running. The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon is a novel about Grace O’Malley, the sixteenth-century Irish chieftain whom English officials called, among worse things, the nurse of all rebellions, and it opens by handing her a gift that will make the next sixty years of her life dangerous. Three Strands: How The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon Is Built The structure is the first thing you notice and the last thing you stop turning over. Instead of running from birth to death, the novel is cut into three interleaved strands, each headed MAIDEN, MOTHER or MATRIARCH, each carrying a year, a title and a flat line stating Grace’s age. So the …
