Republican Steve Hilton advances to general election in race for California governor

Getty Images Republican Steve Hilton has advanced to the general election for California governor after making the case that the state desperately needs new leadership following more than 15 years of Democratic dominance. He’ll face Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former state attorney general and Biden administration health secretary, whom The Associated Press previously determined had won enough votes. Hilton faces a challenging electorate in the November election, as California has nearly twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans. If elected he would be the first GOP candidate to win statewide office since 2006. He thinks he can beat the odds. “Change is coming to California,” Hilton said the day after the election. “That is good news for everyone.” The outcome means Democratic candidate Tom Steyer did not qualify for the November election. During the campaign Hilton attacked Democrats over the state’s high cost of living, the homelessness crisis and other issues. He pledged to lower prices for everything from gas to housing; make …

Antonelli wins fifth race on the spin, Hamilton second

Verstappen has cut a very frustrated figure so far this season, with speculation swirling around his future at Red Bull and in the sport. However, he was in fine form yesterday and came so close to pole, only to be pipped by Antonelli by under half a tenth of a second. “If you would have told me yesterday [Friday] to be on the front row, I would have definitely taken it,” Verstappen said. “This morning [Saturday] we had quite some difficulties with the car so heading into qualifying and being up there was extremely positive. So overall, of course, extremely happy with how qualifying went, how all the laps went even though you have to deal with all the traffic and also the walls. But I am happy to be on the front row and then, tomorrow [today], let’s see in the start. These cars are quite complicated to start. I have two cars behind me that start quite well but we will see. This was a good day and definitely enjoyed it in qualifying.” Lewis Hamilton, …

Mario Tama/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Mario Tama/Getty Images SAN FRANCISCO — Democrat Xavier Becerra will advance to the November election for California governor, according to a race call by The Associated Press. After days of counting ballots, it remains unclear who will claim the second spot in the fall. In California’s unusual primary system, all candidates, regardless of party, appear on a single ballot open to any registered voter. The top two candidates then move on to the general election. An estimated 3.5 million uncounted ballots remain. The state also counts mail-in ballots that arrive up to seven days after Election Day, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. The state hasn’t had a wide-open primary like this one since the late 1990s. The winner in November will lead the country’s most populous state, facing a large deficit and other obstacles, …

Former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, and billionaire activist Tom Steyer, a Democrat are the leading candidates for second place in the all-party primary. With two-thirds of the expected vote tallied, Becerra was taking about 27% to Hilton’s 26%, while Steyer was at 21%. See live results here. Becerra, a former California attorney general and 12-term congressman, campaigned on his extensive experience in government in the race to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, portraying himself as a mainstream and moderate Democrat. Becerra was mired low single digits in the polls for much of the campaign. But he rapidly rose to the top of a muddled field of candidates following former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s abrupt exit from the race in April in the wake of sexual assault and …

The AI IPO Race Heats Up, DOGE Whistleblower Sues Elon Musk, and Instagram Gets Hacked

Zoë Schiffer: Deviance and freaks, the new name of our podcast. And this is, I mean, just going back to red teaming, that’s work that a trust and safety team typically does. And those teams— Leah Feiger: We don’t have those anymore. Zoë Schiffer: They’re not as big as they used to be. There’s just not as much work. So yeah, I mean, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Obviously within Meta, we’ve been talking to folks this week who kind of met the news with SI. The company has just laid off a large portion of the workforce. We’ve written about that. We’ve talked about that. And I checked in with people being like, “Well, how’s it going now?” The hack was kind of an excuse to talk to people, see how they’re doing. And they’re like, “I mean, as you’d expect, we’re asked to do two jobs now instead of on.” So you can imagine how that’s playing out. Brian Barrett: I also, we were talking about AI regulation …

South Korea Lee’s Ruling Party Sweeps Local Elections, but Loses Seoul Mayor Race

South Korea Lee’s Ruling Party Sweeps Local Elections, but Loses Seoul Mayor Race

By Kyu-seok Shim and Joyce Lee SEOUL, June 4 (Reuters) – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s ruling Democratic Party swept most major local races in elections held on Wednesday, but suffered a symbolic setback as the opposition conservative incumbent Oh Se-hoon won another term as Seoul mayor. The Democratic Party won 12 of the 16 major mayoral and provincial contests nationwide, while the conservative People Power ‌Party won four, a result that gives ‌Lee’s party broad control of local governments a year into his presidency. The loss of Seoul, South Korea’s largest city and its most politically prized mayoralty, however, tempered the ruling party’s victory and gives conservatives a key foothold as they seek to rebuild after the scandal over former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed 2024 martial law bid and subsequent impeachment. Speaking on the one-year anniversary of his inauguration, President Lee said the government would “humbly accept the will of the people”, and work actively with local governments regardless of their party affiliation. Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae thanked voters for what …

Atom-based quantum computers are catching up in the race to usefulness

Atom-based quantum computers are catching up in the race to usefulness

Some of the optical components used in Atom Computing’s quantum computer Atom Computing The race to build the first truly useful quantum computer just got more exciting. A quantum computer made from extremely cold atoms has now passed some of the most important milestones towards usefulness, joining a small group of equally able and promising machines. Though there is wide agreement that sufficiently powerful quantum computers would transform our ability to discover new materials and drugs, and break the encryption that underpins the internet, there are many competing ideas about how best to build them. Industry mainstays such as Google and IBM have spent a decade building quantum computers from tiny superconducting circuits, and this approach is currently the frontrunner. But an alternate approach that uses electrically neutral ultracold atoms has recently been gaining traction. Ben Bloom at Atom Computing and his colleagues built a so-called neutral-atom quantum computer that can repeatedly catch and correct its own errors, which is a crucial requirement for it to become useful. “This is a big check mark for …
