Iranian officials have indicated the release of funds would build ‘trust’ needed to reach lasting deal ending war. United States President Donald Trump has said he will not unfreeze billions of dollars in Iranian assets prior to a lasting ceasefire agreement being reached to formally end the US-Israel war with Iran. Trump made the statement in an interview on the NBC News programme Meet the Press that aired on Sunday, indicating little room in the entrenched standoff over the frozen funds. The photograph is almost too on-the-nose to qualify as satire. Drone footage of Washington, DC this weekend showed the results of the last few months of Trumpism, an architectural mishmash of pure, unfettered absurdity. In the foreground is a half-built UFC octagon known as ‘The Claw’, constructed for a fight that supposedly celebrates 250 years of America and will also conveniently fall on Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. In the middle ground are the half-demolished remains of the East Wing of the White House, alongside a large building site surrounding the “whoops, actually it’s taxpayer-funded!” ballroom Trump decided he just had to have. A federal judge recently stalled its construction but, since the president predicted “death and destruction” if it didn’t continue, we can presume that the ballroom build will resume very soon. And of course, in the background, barely visible through the debris, is America’s seat of democracy: the White House itself. Needless to say, it’s an unsubtle metaphor. China’s commerce ministry said on Saturday that Beijing and Washington had struck a preliminary agreement to reduce some tariffs, and also confirmed agricultural and aircraft deals reached during U.S. President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing. The ministry’s statement came the day after Trump concluded a state visit to China for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump had indicated on Friday that tariffs were not discussed in his meetings with Xi. In a statement posted on its website Saturday, the commerce ministry in Beijing said the two ⁠sides had agreed to establish a trade council and an investment council. The company that operates online learning system Canvas said it struck a deal with hackers to delete the data they pilfered in a cyberattack that created chaos for students, many of them in the middle of finals. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, said in an online post that it “reached an agreement with the unauthorized actor involved in this incident.” The company didn’t provide any details on the agreement, including whether it involved a payment, and didn’t elaborate who was behind the hack. Instructure temporarily took the system offline while it investigated, locking out students and faculty. A hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for last week’s breach, threatening to leak data involving nearly 9,000 schools worldwide and 275 million individuals if schools did not pay a ransom by May 6.
