Trump says will not unfreeze Iranian assets before ceasefire deal reached | US-Israel war on Iran News

Iranian officials have indicated the release of funds would build ‘trust’ needed to reach lasting deal ending war. United States President Donald Trump has said he will not unfreeze billions of dollars in Iranian assets prior to a lasting ceasefire agreement being reached to formally end the US-Israel war with Iran. Trump made the statement in an interview on the NBC News programme Meet the Press that aired on Sunday, indicating little room in the entrenched standoff over the frozen funds. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list The US president said any unfreezing of Iranian assets “comes after” a deal is reached. “If they behave, if they do a good job, we start talking,” he said. Iranian officials have repeatedly indicated that any deal could be contingent on the at least partial unfreezing of Tehran’s frozen assets, citing widespread mistrust of US negotiations. The US twice launched military operations against Iran amid ongoing talks on its nuclear programme, a fact many analysts say has made Iranian officials wary in the ongoing ceasefire talks. …

The photo that proves America has finally reached peak absurdity under Trump

The photo that proves America has finally reached peak absurdity under Trump

The photograph is almost too on-the-nose to qualify as satire. Drone footage of Washington, DC this weekend showed the results of the last few months of Trumpism, an architectural mishmash of pure, unfettered absurdity. In the foreground is a half-built UFC octagon known as ‘The Claw’, constructed for a fight that supposedly celebrates 250 years of America and will also conveniently fall on Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. In the middle ground are the half-demolished remains of the East Wing of the White House, alongside a large building site surrounding the “whoops, actually it’s taxpayer-funded!” ballroom Trump decided he just had to have. A federal judge recently stalled its construction but, since the president predicted “death and destruction” if it didn’t continue, we can presume that the ballroom build will resume very soon. And of course, in the background, barely visible through the debris, is America’s seat of democracy: the White House itself. Needless to say, it’s an unsubtle metaphor. The stadium known as ‘The Claw’ will be funded entirely by the UFC. Not so the …

The names of the latest drink launch from Sazerac sound like flavours of slush puppy or fizzy pop – the kind of thing you’d treat the kids to at the cafe of your local municipal pool after getting their 25-metre swimming badge. The appearance bolsters that impression further: radioactive shades of blue, yellow and green liquid in cute bottles, topped with caps in contrasting colours; jazzy labels in lurid hues; graphics of fruit and nostalgic fonts alongside technicolour bubble writing. The terrifying day the U.S.-Iran war reached a sleepy Sri Lankan town : NPR

A deadly strike during the first days of the Iran war hit far away in the Indian Ocean, jolting a quiet seaside town and showing how far the conflict’s reach extends. ADRIAN FLORIDO, HOST: Much of the latest war in the Middle East has happened in the Middle East, as you would expect. But one of the war’s deadliest attacks took place thousands of miles away in the Indian Ocean, shaking a sleepy seaside town. And a warning – this piece contains descriptions of the retrieval of victims after a military strike. NPR’s Diaa Hadid has the story. China says preliminary agreement reached with US to lower some tariffs

China’s commerce ministry said on Saturday that Beijing and Washington had struck a preliminary agreement to reduce some tariffs, and also confirmed agricultural and aircraft deals reached during U.S. President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing. The ministry’s statement came the day after Trump concluded a state visit to China for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump had indicated on Friday that tariffs were not discussed in his meetings with Xi. In a statement posted on its website Saturday, the commerce ministry in Beijing said the two sides had agreed to establish a trade council and an investment council. The trade council will seek to negotiate reciprocal tariff reductions on specific products, as well as broader cuts on unspecified goods including agricultural products, it said. “Through the trade council, the two sides will discuss issues such as tariff reductions on specific products, and they have agreed in principle to lower tariffs on products of respective concern on an equivalent scale,” the ministry said without providing further specifics. In addition, the two sides “agreed to promote two-way trade, including in …

Deal Reached With Hackers to Delete Data Stolen From the Canvas Educational Platform

The company that operates online learning system Canvas said it struck a deal with hackers to delete the data they pilfered in a cyberattack that created chaos for students, many of them in the middle of finals. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, said in an online post that it “reached an agreement with the unauthorized actor involved in this incident.” The company didn’t provide any details on the agreement, including whether it involved a payment, and didn’t elaborate who was behind the hack. Instructure temporarily took the system offline while it investigated, locking out students and faculty. A hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for last week’s breach, threatening to leak data involving nearly 9,000 schools worldwide and 275 million individuals if schools did not pay a ransom by May 6. The group then extended the deadline, indicating some schools had engaged with them to negotiate. ShinyHunters also was behind a smaller breach of Infrastructure last year. A lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Utah alleged Instructure did not do enough to …

Trump says Lebanon and Israel have reached 10-day ceasefire

“BUFFER ZONE” Lebanon was dragged into the war in the Middle East on Mar 2, when Hezbollah opened fire in support of Tehran, prompting an Israeli offensive in Lebanon just 15 months after the last major conflict between the group and Israel. Israeli attacks have killed more than 2,100 people in Lebanon since Mar 2 and forced more than 1.2 million to flee, Lebanese authorities say. Hezbollah attacks have killed two Israeli civilians, while 13 Israeli soldiers have died in Lebanon since Mar 2, Israel says. Israeli forces have invaded areas of southern Lebanon, and vowed to maintain control over territory extending all the way to the Litani River, which meets the Mediterranean some 30 km (20 miles) north of Israel‘s border. Israel ordered residents out of the area south of the Litani during the war. Israeli troops have since destroyed Lebanese villages in the area, saying their aim is to create a “buffer zone” to protect northern Israeli towns from Hezbollah attacks. In Beirut, Lebanese doctor Fadi Sharara told Reuters he wasn’t optimistic about …
