Princess Anne Is Hosting Peter Phillips’s Wedding Reception at Her 19th-Century Mansion

Princess Anne Is Hosting Peter Phillips’s Wedding Reception at Her 19th-Century Mansion

The late queen purchased Gatcombe Park in 1976 as a wedding present for Anne after she married her first husband, Mark Phillips. (According to author Geoffrey Sanders, the estate of more than 500 acres cost about 500,000 British pounds at the time. Its previous owners later said that the royal family was a tough negotiator on the purchase price.) Rebuilt in the 1820s, the Georgian mansion required significant renovations to be inhabitable, but the stonework and floor plan of the main structure and its glass-walled conservatory remained largely intact. Anne used to be a professional equestrian and even competed in the three-day event at the 1976 Olympics. When she moved into Gatcombe Park, she upgraded the stables and turned them into a modern center for such events. From the early 1980s to 2023, Anne used the grounds to host the annual Festival of British Eventing, which attracted riders from around the world. Gatcombe Park in June 1976. Stop the rush to push reception kids into formal learning

Stop the rush to push reception kids into formal learning

The autumn term now begins very differently to how it once did for many reception teachers. They often welcome children who, for many reasons, are not always able to access “school life” in the way their predecessors once could. They increasingly face challenges linked to speech and language delays, emotional regulation difficulties, an over-dependence on adults and an unfamiliarity with collaborative play. Source link

Jumping into water has become a hallmark of the “trash the dress” trend, which sees brides deliberately ruining their gowns after the ceremony in search of a memorable — or viral — photo opportunity. However, Tennessee-based bride Shelby Crawford recently posted a TikTok video showing how the tradition can go wrong. The clip sees her and her husband, Corey Crawford, leaping into a swimming pool together after their nuptials; however, while Corey quickly resurfaces, Shelby is engulfed with the enormous train of her wedding dress. Don’t ‘prolong staggered starts’, schools told

Don’t ‘prolong staggered starts’, schools told

Schools should avoid “prolonged staggered starts” for children who are about to start reception, according to new government guidance. The Department for Education has published advice on “getting children ready for reception” which is aimed to help primary school leaders, reception teachers and staff, and teachers working in early years settings improve the children’s transition to reception. As part of the guidance, it states that schools should “take care to avoid creating a ‘double transition’ through prolonged staggered starts or extended part time arrangements”. It says: “While often well intentioned, these approaches can increase uncertainty, disrupt the formation of secure attachments and delay the establishment of consistent routines. “This is particularly important for children moving from an early years setting into reception, who are often ready for a clear and confident step into full time school. “When attendance is delayed or inconsistent, this consistency can be undermined just as children are ready to settle.” Make home visits before September It adds that evidence from case study schools shows that settling in periods of up to …

Reception teaching must adapt to delayed development

Reception teaching must adapt to delayed development

Reception teachers are consistently noticing patterns within their cohorts that cannot be ignored. Across the country, more children are starting school with delayed communication and language skills, reduced attention, lower self-regulation and less experience of sustained play. These are not isolated cases, and this is not a crisis headline. They are patterns discussed quietly in staff rooms, shaping how early years practitioners understand the start of school and what September looks like for many of our four-year-olds. As the proportion of children working at age-expected levels in foundational areas such as language acquisition declines, our understanding of what day one learning means must adapt. Communication and language are not peripheral skills. They are not bonus experiences offered to children as part of a writing hook or maths activity. They are foundational to a child’s access to learning. A child with weaker oral language will struggle to communicate needs, engage in conversation, ask questions that deepen play or articulate emotions. This narrows their access to the curriculum from the outset. Self-regulation is equally critical. For many, …

Guggenheim Union Rallies Outside Carol Bove Reception for Contract

Guggenheim Union Rallies Outside Carol Bove Reception for Contract

On Wednesday in Manhattan, VIP guests trickled into the Guggenheim Museum to celebrate its buzzy Carol Bove show, while outside, its unionized staff—conservators, archivists, educators, front-facing staff, and others—rallied for a second contract that the group hopes will be more robust.   The Guggenheim staff, who voted to join UAW Local 2110 in 2023 after more than two years of negotiations with management, are back at the bargaining table under renewed urgency. Last year, the museum cut 20 jobs—7 percent of its staff—across multiple departments, marking its third round of layoffs in five years.  Related Articles At the time, museum leadership cited an “overall financial picture” that “is not where it needs to be” as the reason for the job cuts, which were framed as part of a broader “reorganization.” The museum’s union said it had not been given advance notice of the layoffs. In February 2025, a grievance was filed against the museum, and contract negotiations have since positioned job security as a top priority.  Anton Sherin, an archivist at the Guggenheim since 2009, told ARTnews, “I’m a …
