Normal People With Actual Common Sense Refuse To Post 9 Things On Social Media

Social media encourages all of us to share everything that happens in our lives, for good or bad. Every thought and meal is considered worthy of sharing with anyone who follows us or may be interested enough in the same topic for our post to appear in their feed. Apps like Instagram and TikTok reward attention and quick reactions, so many people assume the smartest voices online are the loudest. Usually, though, that isn’t true. People who actually possess common sense are well aware that there are some things you should refuse to ever post on social media for other people’s consumption. We all know by now that the internet remembers everything we post long after the emotions we felt when we posted it are gone. One careless post can shape the way other people view you for years. Common sense dictates that there is literally no reason to turn every opinion, argument, achievement, or emotional reaction into content when you can enjoy the moment for yourself or with people who really matter without the …

Americans Refuse To Be Happy

Americans Refuse To Be Happy

According to Americans, it is bad out there. Real bad. This month, the University of Michigan’s index of consumer sentiment dropped to its lowest point since 1952, when the survey started. A poll of potential Republican voters found that just 43 percent rated the economy as “excellent” or “good” and 55 percent as “fair” or “poor”; for potential Democratic voters, the shares were 5 percent and 94 percent, respectively. Low-income families are nervous, and so are high-income ones. Students and retirees are dour. Rural and urban voters are dissatisfied. People are worried about the present and future. They’re concerned for themselves and their neighbors. Indeed, households are feeling worse about their personal finances and the broader state of the economy than they did during the Great Inflation of the 1970s, when the cost of groceries doubled and the government was forced to ration gasoline; the Volcker shock, from 1979 to 1982, when the average interest rate on 30-year mortgages hit 18.6 percent and the country went into devastating back-to-back recessions; the early months of the …

Jobless Claims Refuse To Show Any Signs Of AI Jobpocalypse

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time fell to 209k last week (below expectations), continuing to show absolutely on signs of any labor market stress… Source: Bloomberg That is basically unchanged since 2021. Continuing jobless claims ticked up modestly but remains below 1.8 million Americans (just off two year lows)… Source: Bloomberg So, despite the tsunami of headlines every day about the AI jobpocalypse, ‘hard’ data shows no signs of any pain yet (wait until the severance packages run dry)… Source link

Why Does Donald Trump Refuse to Defend America?

Why Does Donald Trump Refuse to Defend America?

Some of Donald Trump’s favorite world leaders have been scoundrels, bullies, and dictators. He keeps a picture of himself with the Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin on the wall of the White House. He claims to have fallen “in love” with the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. He publicly supported Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, who has been chased from power, and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, who is now under house arrest for the next two decades. He just returned from China and gushed about how the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, is a “great leader” whom he’s honored to have as “a friend.” The China summit also showed, yet again, that such men can both intimidate and flatter Trump into taking their side, even against the United States. Trump’s own FBI calls China’s recent cyberattacks and influence operations against U.S. government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions “a grave threat to the economic well-being and democratic values of the United States.” But when asked whether he had discussed these attacks with Xi, the president …

I was fined £500 for putting a cigarette butt in a refuse sack | Money

I read your story about a man fined £500 for dropping a cigarette butt on the pavement. I have been issued with a £500 fixed-penalty notice (FPN) by Haringey council for putting a butt in a refuse sack awaiting collection on the street. The council claims that this counts as littering because the sack was not a public bin, even though it was filled with rubbish. It has threatened prosecution if I don’t pay. I haven’t knowingly dropped litter since I was a child, and am outraged at this extortionate fine. TW, London In principle I support penalties for littering that despoils and disfigures our streets, but in your case it was not littering as most of us would understand it. Moreover, the level of fines for first or ambiguous offences is concerning, as is the lack of transparency and accountability. Councils are allowed to issue on-the-spot fines of up to £500 which, unlike penalty charge notices for parking breaches, can’t be appealed against. Recipients have to argue the toss in court when the council …

At the Giardini, Artists Refuse to Make Fascism Cozy

At the Giardini, Artists Refuse to Make Fascism Cozy

The worst thing you could do to the German Pavilion, Henrike Naumann decided, per a wall text, would be to “make it cozy.” Adorning the windows of the space—which was remodeled by the Nazis in 1938 in an overtly fascist style that it still maintains—she added holes to domestic-feeling curtains, fabric in denim and gingham. But cozy they are not. Some have violent rips; others have holes fixed neatly with grommets. None, as far as I can tell, are patched over seamlessly. This year’s Venice Biennale marks the first edition under the organization’s new president, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco—himself associated with neo-fascist politics. The chatter around it focuses on his claim of “neutrality,” allowing any and all countries to participate regardless of whether they are in the midst of committing crimes against humanity. Related Articles All this violence—and art’s complicity in it, as a tool for soft power and reputation laundering—looms over the national pavilions. And even more so after the exhibition jury announced it would not consider pavilions from countries whose leaders are currently charged with …

People Who Refuse To Use AI And ChatGPT Have 10 Very Rare Traits

“Why would I bother to read something someone couldn’t be bothered to write?” communications worker Sabine Zetteler asks, collectively summing up narratives of anti-AI individuals.
