Federal Reserve says keep Jerome Powell subpoenas quashed

Kevin Dietsch | Getty Images The Federal Reserve Board of Governors urged a judge to reject prosecutors’ request that he reconsider his recent decision to block subpoenas issued in a criminal investigation of Chair Jerome Powell over pricey renovations of the Fed’s headquarters and his congressional testimony about that. The Fed’s lawyers, in a court filing unsealed Thursday, told Judge James Boasberg that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia failed to come even remotely close to meeting the legal threshold for its motion for reconsideration. “The Motion for Reconsideration … does not even mention — let alone meet — the demanding legal standard that applies to the extraordinary relief it seeks,” the Fed’s lawyers wrote in the motion in U.S. District Court in Washington. The attorneys said “reconsideration is warranted only” when there has been a change in the law related to the issues in the case, when there is new …

Charlie Neibergall/AP hide caption toggle caption Charlie Neibergall/AP WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor was just days away from returning home to her husband and two children when a drone strike at a command center in Kuwait killed her and five other U.S. service members. “She was almost home,” her husband, Joey Amor, said from their home in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on Tuesday. “You don’t go to Kuwait thinking something’s going to happen, and for her to be one of the first — it hurts.” Amor was one of four U.S. soldiers killed in the Iran war on Sunday and identified Tuesday by the Pentagon; two soldiers haven’t yet been publicly identified. The members of the Army Reserve worked in logistics and kept troops supplied with food and equipment. They died just one day after the U.S. and Israel launched its military campaign against Iran. Brazil Proposes National Bitcoin Reserve, Targets 1 Million BTC Over Five Years

Brazil Proposes National Bitcoin Reserve, Targets 1 Million BTC Over Five Years

Authored by Micah Zimmerman via BitcoinMagazine.com, Brazilian lawmakers have reintroduced a bill to create a national Strategic Sovereign Bitcoin Reserve, known as RESBit, proposing the gradual acquisition of one million bitcoins over five years.  The bill, presented by Federal Deputy Luiz Gastão (PSD/CE), outlines a comprehensive framework to integrate Bitcoin into the country’s financial strategy and diversify national reserves. The proposed legislation establishes several guidelines for RESBit. First, the plan calls for a gradual accumulation of at least 1,000,000 BTC over five years. It prohibits the sale of bitcoins seized by Brazilian judicial authorities, ensuring that these assets remain within public control.  The bill also allows for the collection of Brazil’s federal taxes in Bitcoin and offers incentives for public companies to engage in Bitcoin mining and storage. Transparency is a central feature of the proposal. The bill mandates public disclosure of RESBit’s bitcoin holdings through internet-based platforms, enabling auditing by the public. It emphasizes secure storage of digital assets using technologies such as cold wallets, multisignature wallets, and other internationally recognized mechanisms. In addition, the legislation permits temporary holdings …

Prince William’s first tour of Saudi Arabia ends with nature reserve visit | UK News

The Prince of Wales has visited a nature reserve on the final day of his first tour of Saudi Arabia to learn about a programme reintroducing endangered species. The future king toured the Sharaan Nature Reserve in the east of the country to hear about ongoing conservation initiatives aimed at protecting and reintroducing native species such as gazelles and the Arabian oryx. He was also told about a flagship programme to bring back the critically endangered Arabian leopard. The prince planted an acacia tree at the reserve as he was given details about ongoing efforts to protect its natural wildlife and landscape. Image: William plants an acacia tree at the reserve. Trump’s critical mineral reserve is an admission that the future is electric

Trump’s critical mineral reserve is an admission that the future is electric

The Trump administration announced this week the U.S. government would work to build a $11.7 billion stockpile of critical minerals. That’s the headline; the subtext is more intriguing. The stockpile initiative, branded as Project Vault, is the latest attempt by the administration to secure supplies of critical minerals for U.S. manufacturers and what President Donald Trump says will ensure “American businesses and workers are never harmed by any shortage.” It follows recent investments from the administration into rare earth producers, including equity stakes in miners USA Rare Earth and MP Materials. Individually, they can be interpreted as an administration taking steps to calm a part of the market that has been roiled by its own trade wars. Collectively, they’re an admission, however tacit or subconscious, that the future relies on electric technologies, including electric vehicles and wind turbines. In his announcement, Trump alluded to the world’s dependence on China for a slew of critical minerals. Over the last year-plus, China has wielded its dominance to counter tariff threats from the Trump administration, restricting exports of …

Trump taps Kevin Warsh to chair Federal Reserve

Trump taps Kevin Warsh to chair Federal Reserve

President Donald Trump plans to nominate Kevin Warsh to the board of the Federal Reserve as a governor and the next chair of the central bank. If confirmed by the Senate, Warsh would succeed Jerome Powell, whose tenure as chair ends in May. Trump announced the nomination in a post on social media Friday morning. “I have known Kevin for a long period of time, and have no doubt that he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best,” Trump wrote. “On top of everything else, he is ‘central casting,’ and he will never let you down,” the president said. Trump did not mention Powell in the announcement. But Warsh’s Senate confirmation process will likely be made much more difficult as a result of the pressure campaign Trump has waged against Powell and the bank to drastically lower interest rates. That campaign has alienated key senators whose support Warsh will need in order to be confirmed by the closely divided Senate. On Friday, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., a member of …
