This is how we do it: ‘I love the idea of only knowing one person intimately for the rest of my life’ | Life and style

Veronika, 18 double quotation markThere have been days when we’ve been on the phone for 10 hours at a stretch Part of me always hoped I’d have a love story like my parents, who were college sweethearts and are still crazy about each other 30 years later. Maybe that’s why it felt so natural to me that Fabio and I were serious about our future together from the moment he asked me out two years ago. We were just 16 and 17 at that point, and still dealing with the madness of A-levels (not to mention applying to universities on different sides of the Atlantic), but while most of our friends split up after sixth form, we never even considered it, though admittedly long-distance has been way harder than I expected. Before Fabio and I started dating, I’d only ever been kissed once – badly – so he’s the first person I’ve shared my body with in any real way. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with hook-up culture, but I’ve always been clear that …

‘We are not like the rest of Andalucía’: the rugged charms of Almería, Spain’s desert city | Andalucia holidays

‘We are not like the rest of Andalucía’: the rugged charms of Almería, Spain’s desert city | Andalucia holidays

Perched high on the battlements of Almería’s 10th-century Alcazaba, looking over the mosaic of flat roofs tumbling down to the sea, I’m reminded of author Gerald Brenan’s travel classic South from Granada, and his impression upon arriving in Almería in 1920: “Certainly, it seemed that the sea was doubly Mediterranean here, and the city … contained within it echoes of distant civilisations.” A British adventurer, Hispanist and fringe member of the Bloomsbury group, Brenan had walked to Almería from where he was living near Granada, apparently to buy extra furniture in preparation for a visit from Virginia Woolf and friends. A century later, my journey here in a 30-year-old van from London is somewhat less notable, but as I marvel at the almost surreal incandescence of the Med, and the maze of ancient streets below me, I too am aware of a sensation of time travel. Illustration: Graphics/Guardian Graphics Brenan would have been a novelty visitor back then. And even today, unlike Málaga, just a couple of hours down the coast, Almería is little visited …

Israel destroys another bridge linking south Lebanon to rest of country

Israel destroys another bridge linking south Lebanon to rest of country

As it engages in heated battles with pro-Iran militant group Hezbollah in a number of Lebanese border villages, Israel has bombed another bridge across a river dividing the country’s north and south. It adds to widespread fears in Lebanon that Israel intends to depopulate the southern region in the long-term as a million people have been displaced by the fighting. The sky is a perfect blue. It’s a powerful and cuddly photo – and it’s the favoured pose: the back or side of Lilibet’s head. We’ve seen it so many times before. There’s the back of Lilibet’s head wearing a reversed baseball cap while helping out in a charity kitchen for Thanksgiving in November, a “Happy Holidays” post in December with her hair covering her face, and there she is enjoying pumpkin picking in October, pulled along in a cart by Meghan, while Prince …

The kindness of strangers: On the plane I was overwhelmed with grief, then a passenger let me rest my head on his shoulder | Australian lifestyle

The kindness of strangers: On the plane I was overwhelmed with grief, then a passenger let me rest my head on his shoulder | Australian lifestyle

A long-haul flight in economy is never an appealing prospect but this one felt especially tough. I was leaving California after the death of my father to return to Australia, where I live. I was exhausted, emotional and prone to bursting into tears. It was always hard leaving my birthplace, friends and family behind, and this time I was also contending with the loss of my beloved dad. I was desperately hoping I might have a spare seat next to me on the plane so I could get some sleep, or at least a little privacy. There would be no such luck. When I checked in, the desk staff told me the flight was completely full; worse still, I was in the very last row. Mine was the aisle seat, right beside the toilet and the galley – the busiest, most public place on the plane, when what I really needed was peace. When I boarded and saw my seat, I really fell apart. Next to me was a very large, bodybuilder-type guy, who was …
