SINGAPORE: Southeast Asia faces a high risk of severe transboundary haze for the rest of 2026, with conditions expected to peak between August and September due to a strong El Nino bringing about hotter and drier conditions, a Singapore think-tank warned on Wednesday (Jun 24). The Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) said it has issued a rare “red” warning in its 17-page Haze Outlook 2026 report, which signals a high risk of severe transboundary haze affecting Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in the remaining months of this year. This is only the second time SIIA has issued its highest-risk rating since it launched the annual outlook in 2019, following a similar assessment in 2023. Haze returned to Singapore that year as hotspots surged in parts of Sumatra amid El Nino-driven dry conditions. Most of my TV happens on free, ad-supported apps. They run on my Samsung Frame sets in the main rooms, the TCL Roku TV in my basement, and my Hisense Canvas, and once I’d sorted out a setting buried in the TV that mattered more than any HDMI cable, the picture held up across all of them. What I still hadn’t settled was which free app actually had the stuff I wanted to watch. So four got a month of real use: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Plex’s free tier. Anytime I wanted to watch something, I jotted it down and checked which app had it. One service ended up covering about 80% of that list. Tubi won, and it wasn’t close. Apple’s annual WWDC developers conference is in the rearview mirror, but there is still a lot to look forward to over the next year and beyond. In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman listed around 20 products that he expects Apple to release across the remainder of 2026 and 2027. Now that the more intelligent and personal version of Siri has finally arrived in beta, a full two years after Apple first previewed it at WWDC 2024, we should begin to see some new devices that were reportedly postponed until the new Siri was ready. Beyond the usual annual updates to iPhones and Apple Watches in September, Gurman said Apple’s all-new smart home hub could still arrive this year. He is also expecting a foldable iPhone Ultra and long-awaited updates to the Apple TV and HomePod mini. And a redesigned MacBook Ultra with an OLED display is expected by early next year. Anthropic released two new AI models called Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 on Tuesday, which the company says have greater capabilities than the Mythos Preview model it released in April to a limited set of tech industry partners. Anthropic has said the initial, limited release stemmed from concerns that the model’s capabilities could be exploited by bad actors to develop hacking tools that could catch defenders off guard. Anthropic is currently only releasing Claude Mythos 5 to a limited set of industry partners, many of which received access to Mythos Preview, and the company says it is collaborating with the US government on the rollout. Claude Fable 5, which is being publicly released, uses the same underlying model as Mythos 5, but will have “guardrails” in place at launch, the company said Tuesday, that will block the model from answering many user questions related to cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry.
