MoMA PS1’s Newest Restaurant Will Be Symone by DeVonn Francis

The restaurant space at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens, will soon have a new tenant: Symone, by chef DeVonn Francis, will open in early October. The space’s menu will also be previewed during Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair, running September 24–27. With daytime dining offered during the museum’s operating hours, Symone will be Francis’s first restaurant, serving French African–inspired cuisine that uses seasonal ingredients and draws on Francis’s Jamaican and Caribbean roots. In 2017, Francis founded Yardy World, which specializes in immersive dining experiences via a Caribbean cuisine. Some developers would rip the soul out of a 1930s banking hall, but Kinz, a new all-day Lebanese brasserie housed in a former Lloyds Bank in Notting Hill, instead makes a feature of its chunky vault door. Where W11 residents once kept their cash, diners can now take a seat and sip Lebanese wine from the Bekaa valley. After all, what visit to the bank wouldn’t be improved by a cold glass of Chateau Musar Jeune? This triple-height room with mezzanine seating is a very different proposition from all those tiny, homespun Lebanese restaurants typically anchored around Edgware Road since the 1970s. Kinz may offer kibbeh nayyeh (finely minced raw lamb and beef with bulgur, spices and pine nuts), shish barak (tiny lamb and herb dumplings in yoghurt sauce) and warak enab (lamb-stuffed vine leaves and baby courgettes), as do many places in pockets across west London, but there is something altogether more cinematic about this elegant setting. I feel like—so not cool,” George McNally says. We’re at a Chase Bank in Tribeca. Not the part with cobblestone streets, $20 million lofts, and boutiques that sell $500 Japanese denim jeans. The part east of West Broadway that bleeds into the grit of the Financial District, the skyscrapers so tall and the streets so narrow that sunlight doesn’t reach much at all. Nöam, the kosher restaurant that anchors it, was burning. He threw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and hopped into his daughter’s Ford Bronco. The drive was only five minutes, but each one felt like an eternity. Police and fire crews had cordoned off several blocks around Montreal’s Décarie Boulevard, forcing him to abandon the car and run the rest of the way on foot. An explosion Saturday at a Moscow restaurant that killed three people and wounded 21 others was a bombing, Russia’s national anti-terrorism committee said, the Tass state news agency reported. “A homemade explosive device blew up at a restaurant in Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow, killing three people,” said the committee, quoted by the Tass state news agency. An unidentified woman who attempted to carry the explosive device into the restaurant died in the blast as did a security guard and a patron, the news agency said. Ria Novosti reported the woman attempted to smuggle the bomb into the establishment but the security guard refused to let her in before the bomb exploded. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the bomb attack a “brutal terrorist act” on Sunday. “Yesterday, a brutal terrorist act was committed in Moscow that claimed human lives.
