Virginia judge blocks redistricting referendum result

U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) speaks with reporters as he walks to his office following a press conference at the U.S. Capitol building on March 27, 2026 in Washington, DC. Samuel Corum | Getty Images A Virginia circuit court judge on Wednesday issued an order blocking the results of a congressional redistricting referendum that could net Democrats four extra seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026. Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, in a statement, vowed to fight the order issued by Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley, a Republican appointee, a day after Tuesday’s referendum approved the newly drawn districts. “My office will immediately file an appeal in the Court of Appeals,” Jones said. “As I said last night, Virginia voters have spoken, and an activist judge should not have veto power over the People’s vote,” the attorney general said. “We look forward to defending the outcome of last night’s election in court.” The Virginia redistricting referendum – which is the latest battleground in the partisan gerrymandering war leading up …

Eight days of vote counting and still no result in Peru – Press Review

PRESS REVIEW – Monday, April 20: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s troubles continue after it emerged last week that he sent Peter Mandelson to Washington as ambassador despite him failing to meet Foreign Office security standards. Also, anger mounts in Peru after the first round of the presidential elections saw widespread irregularities, including polling stations that didn’t open and ballot papers found in bins. Finally, Etsy are finally looking to tap the potential of the break-up economy. It’s the day Keir Starmer must stand up and take the blame, says the Daily Mail, as he prepares to tell parliament once again that the Foreign Office concealed Peter Mandelson’s failed security clearance from Downing Street. The “I didn’t know defence” is one he often lambasted Boris Johnson over during Partygate and other scandals, an irony not lost on Ella Baron at the Guardian. The Telegraph, meanwhile, argues that this security clearance is really a technicality, as the prime minister was aware of the red flags about Mandelson regardless. The senior civil servant who took the fall may be considering legal action against the government, …

I let a smart planter maintain itself while I was away for 2 months – here’s the result

As a stereotypical plant-hoarding, book-loving, socially anxious millennial who writes about smart home tech for a living, I live for inventions like the LeafyPod. This smart planter lets you repot your own plant (as long as it fits) with your own potting soil, and then it basically takes care of it for you. Also: 10 useful smart home gadgets that make life so much easier (and most are discounted) I’ve had a Dieffenbachia in my LeafyPod for almost two months and am just now getting around to refilling its water reservoir for the first time. This, combined with app support and several months of battery on one charge make for a complete package for your plants. If this all makes you think, why would my planters need Wi-Fi? Let me prove why the LeafyPod is such a useful invention. Why …

Are humans degenerating genetically and getting dumber as a result?

Are humans degenerating genetically and getting dumber as a result?

Are harmful genetic mutations piling up and making us less smart? H. Armstrong Roberts/ClassicStock/Getty Images You are a mutant. You were born with around 100 mutations that your parents don’t have. You’ll pass about half of these on to your children, if you have any, who will have 100 new mutations of their own. And their children too, and so on. So, are we humans accumulating harmful mutations generation after generation, resulting in a decline in our physical and mental fitness? Some think so. “A substantial reduction in human fitness can be expected over the next few centuries in industrialized societies,” geneticist Michael Lynch wrote in 2010. Around this time, several studies reported declining IQ in a number of countries, including the UK, Australia, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. It seemed like this might be direct evidence of us becoming more stupid. The idea of human degeneration was, of course, the basis for wildly unethical eugenic policies in the 20th century. There’s some very nasty history here. But while the early eugenicists were largely making stuff …

Scotland vs France LIVE: Six Nations result, latest updates and reaction after 90-point classic

France soon bit back with two quickfire tries, one from the lethal Louis Bielle-Biarrey – scoring in his ninth straight Six Nations appearance – and another set up by the 22-year-old for fellow wing Theo Attissogbe, but the hosts weren’t behind for long as Kyle Steyn and Pierre Schoeman charged over. Then, a blistering start to the second period saw Scotland lead by 47-14 not long after the hour mark thanks to seconds from Steyn and Graham plus scores from Ben White and substitute Tom Jordan. Labour wants closer ties with the EU. The result would be disastrous

Labour wants closer ties with the EU. The result would be disastrous

Labour’s 2024 election manifesto promised that Britain would not rejoin the EU Customs Union or Single Market. People voted Labour on that belief. Yet, it is already clear that these words were never to be relied upon. The Prime Minister and his colleagues are becoming increasingly open about that fact. In his speech at the Munich security conference last month – that is, in carefully considered words, not casual remarks – he said “we must look at where we can move closer to the Single Market”. Rachel Reeves said in the same week that “deeper economic integration is in all of our interests”. Peter Kyle, the Business Secretary, said last week that “having two sides that are aligned, that’s where the magic happens”. David Lammy and Wes Streeting have both told us we should look again at the customs union. They really aren’t hiding it. The words in the manifesto are in fact not a promise but a distraction. They are intended to get us to look the other way while the Government gets on …
