Scottish Labour’s result in the 2026 election was its worst in devolution history, but it also sits forlornly in a pattern of serial decline for a party that I dedicated much of my adult life to and once led. The backdrop of the UK political context has been unhelpful to Scottish Labour in each of the devolved elections for at least two decades. Academic analyses of both the 2007 and 2011 elections foregrounded valence issues and perceptions of the relative competence and performance as explanations for Labour’s defeats to the SNP. But a strong part of that explanation concerns voter judgements on the party that best represents Scottish interests. In 2007, anger towards the UK Labour government for its involvement in the Iraq war was palpable. In 2011, Scots who had voted Labour in the preceding year’s general election, and for a Scottish Labour prime minister in the form of Gordon Brown, got David Cameron instead. In the event, the SNP did not win the overall majority First Minister John Swinney sought in the 2026 Scottish election. However, between them the SNP and the Greens won 73 seats, 57% of all MSPs. It is the largest ever contingent of pro-independence MSPs at Holyrood. Yet between them the two parties won just 41% of the regional list vote. The avowed aim of the parliament’s mixed-member proportional electoral system is to produce a distribution of seats proportional to each party’s share of the list vote. However, as the table below shows, this is not the first time disproportionality has benefited the party of government and its potential allies. But it is the biggest discrepancy yet – even greater than that which favoured the Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition at the first two Holyrood elections. It’s a beautiful, balmy afternoon at Dolores Park in San Francisco, and I’m singing a birthday song to a prehistoric dinosaur. A cupcake with a pink candle magically appears in my empty hand as I finish my serenade. When I blow out the flame, a calm look of contentment washes over the CGI-esque creature. While the man in this AI video looks and sounds just like me, the clip was actually generated using one of the new features available in Google’s Gemini app: avatars. These digital recreations are similar to the core features of OpenAI’s now-defunct Sora app. It’s a digital clone of you that can be inserted into AI videos. Avatars are powered by the company’s new Omni video model, and the feature is only available to subscribers. I pay $20 a month for Google’s AI Pro plan and quickly maxed out Gemini’s usage limits, which reset every 5 hours. Android and ChromeOS are merging into a single operating system, and the result could become one of the most powerful platforms Google has ever produced. Dubbed Aluminum OS, the operating system takes the full Chrome browser experience and integrates it directly into Android, giving it a new home outside of phones and tablets.  Google seems to think now is the time to make a big move into the laptop space, and it could be right. Android has primarily been used on phones and tablets, but combining it with ChromeOS into a single, more powerful platform makes sense. Bringing native Android app support to the full Chrome browser could create a far more robust operating system experience. It would also give Google an opportunity to offer a more seamless and integrated experience across Android phones and laptops through its new Aluminum OS platform.
