Study reveals hidden role of permafrost in ancient climate change

Study reveals hidden role of permafrost in ancient climate change

For decades, scientists have looked to the oceans for answers about one of Earth’s biggest climate mysteries: Why did atmospheric carbon dioxide rise so dramatically as the planet emerged from the last Ice Age? A new study from the University of Gothenburg suggests the answer may lie much closer to home, buried beneath frozen ground that stretched across vast areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The research indicates that thawing permafrost released enormous amounts of stored carbon as temperatures climbed after the last Ice Age. According to the study, those emissions may have accounted for nearly half of the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide during the transition from a frozen world to the warmer climate humans know today. The findings offer a fresh perspective on how natural climate systems worked in the past. They also raise concerns about what could happen as modern warming accelerates the thawing of today’s permafrost regions. Reconstructed biome distributions at 0, 6, and 21 ka. Sarah Snook on Why ‘All Her Fault’ Was Perfect Post-‘Succession’ Role

Sarah Snook on Why ‘All Her Fault’ Was Perfect Post-‘Succession’ Role

Sarah Snook was admittedly a little tepid on the idea of doing a TV show in the middle of her award-winning theater blitz. It was 2024, and the actress, famed and acclaimed for her role as the ice-cold Shiv Roy in Jesse Armstrong’s HBO family drama Succession, was winding down on her production of The Picture of Dorian Gray on London’s West End, in which she played 26 separate roles, and for which she would later nab Tony and Laurence Olivier awards. The expectation was that the show would transfer to Broadway. So when she was approached by All Her Fault creator Megan Gallagher and executive producer Nigel Marchant, Snook remembers saying a lot of, “No, there’s no way I can do this show,” she recalls, noting balancing a TV return with Broadway was just too much of an ask. “And to do it away from home, it would mean that it’s too long away from my family,” adds Snook, who had at the time just welcomed a daughter with husband Dave Lawson. But then …

Sriram Krishnan is leaving his role as White House AI advisor

Former tech executive and VC Sriram Krishnan is leaving the Trump administration at the end of June. “It is hard to express how big a privilege it has been to serve the American people and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to do so,” Krishnan said in a post on X. “First and foremost, it has been an honor to serve under President [Donald Trump]. Without his leadership, we would not be leading in the AI race.” Krishnan, who’s been serving as a senior policy advisor on artificial intelligence at the White House, was one of a number of tech industry figures to take roles in the second Trump administration. Krishnan has led product teams at Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, Facebook, and Snap, and he was most recently a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a firm whose founders threw their support behind Trump during the 2024 election.  In his post, Krishnan highlighted some “key public accomplishments,” starting with the administration’s AI Action Plan, which prioritized data center construction over regulation and safety. Since then, …

The series, following a mystery-solving priest, is based on the short stories by GK Chesterton, and Alec Guinness appeared in a film adaptation back in 1954. But Williams, also known for playing Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, is not a fan of Star Wars actor Guinness’ interpretation. He shared his brutal assessment in a new interview, stating: “Much as I love Alec Guinness, I think he’s terrible at Father Brown. Mark Williams as Father Brown in hit BBC series of same name (BBC) Williams told The Guardian: “He does the same voice as he does for the bishop in Kind Hearts and Coronets. He sort of acts clerical – and that’s not the point of …
