The Clarkson’s Farm host underwent a heart procedure in October 2024 after experiencing tightness in his chest and pins and needles in his arms – and after going to hospital, doctors told him he was maybe days away from a heart attack due to blocked arteries. Clarkson opened up about the experience on the first episode of Clarkson’s Farm season five, airing 3 June. He attributed his deterioration to the “stressful” pressure of opening his pub, The Farmer’s Dog, just weeks earlier. “I’m back and not dead,” he told farm sidekick Kaleb Cooper, adding: “The grim reaper will have to wait. It was f***ing close, though.” ‘The grim reaper will have to wait,’ Jeremy Clarkson tells Kaleb Cooper in ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ (Prime Video) However, he …

I Tried 'Ranger Rolling' My Luggage And Saved So Much Space

I Tried 'Ranger Rolling' My Luggage And Saved So Much Space

I have something to confess: I’m a ridiculously heavy over-packer, even though I know there are better ways. I once brought a car-hoggingly huge suitcase to a two-day wedding. When my partner and I lived apart, I’d regularly bring two big sports bags over for a weekend. But for a recent trip, I figured: no more. Now, I think, is the time to save some suitcase space (not least because some airlines could soon become stricter about carry-on measurements).  My biggest problem is clothes. So, I gave “ranger rolling” a try, and was seriously impressed by the results.  What is ranger rolling?  It’s basically rolling up your clothes, but with an added “lip” made from the bottom of the garment that secures it to prevent unrolling.  Yes, “regular” rolling works too. But, Travel + Leisure pointed out, they risk far more wrinkling and a much greater chance of becoming loose than the military-approved method. How do you “ranger roll” clothes?  I have to be honest with you: this is a lot easier with thin, “square”-ish …

These backyard solar panels saved me /mo on my power bill – here’s my setup

These backyard solar panels saved me $20/mo on my power bill – here’s my setup

Anker Solix F3800 Plus + 410W Solar Panels pros and cons Pros Works well as an expandable, small-scale solar setup. Helps you save between $12-$25 a month, depending on local rates. Flexible scalability means a smaller initial investment. Cons Savings depend on your location, panel angle, and rates. The F3800 Plus isn’t as portable as other batteries. While cheaper than whole-home backup systems, it’s still expensive. Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. With the increase of daily temperatures, power bills tend to follow. I’ve been experimenting with offsetting my own power bill with solar, and found a sustainable solution. The Anker Solix F3800 Plus is an expandable battery with a 3.84kWh capacity, working like a cross between a traditional gas generator, a permanent home battery backup system, and a portable battery.  Also: Switch to plug-in solar? My advice after testing the DIY energy tech at home Don’t let its wheels fool you, though. The F3800 Plus isn’t designed for tent camping (though you technically could if you can easily lug around all 136 …

Trapped woman left to drown by paramedic who thought she could not be saved

Trapped woman left to drown by paramedic who thought she could not be saved

A young mother died while stuck head-first and upside down between rocks on a seafront after a paramedic wrongly decided she could not be saved, an inquest heard. Saffron Cole-Nottage, 32, a mother of six, was walking with her daughter and her dog when she fell head-first into sea-defence rocks in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on Feb 2, 2025. Colleen Gibson was the first paramedic on the scene at about 8.10pm, but told the hearing she felt “unable to make a rescue” because Ms Cole-Nottage had already been “20 minutes submerged”. Body-camera footage showed police officers arriving and asking Ms Gibson whether anything could be done to save the trapped woman, to which she replied: “No.” Bridget Dolan KC, counsel for the two-week inquest, asked the paramedic why she did not tell emergency services that she potentially had had another 10 minutes to save the trapped woman’s life. Ms Gibson, who cried on the witness stand, replied: “I don’t know.” The seafront at Lowestoft where Ms Cole-Nottage lost her life – East Anglia News Service/East Anglia News …

Ah, ah, ah, ah – I saved my dad’s life with a little help from The Office and the Bee Gees | Culture

Ah, ah, ah, ah – I saved my dad’s life with a little help from The Office and the Bee Gees | Culture

It was a boiling hot day last summer, four days after my dad’s 73rd birthday. Mum was plating up dinner and Dad was on the sofa complaining about how stifling it was. I was meant to head to work, for my job as a personal trainer, but decided to take the evening off. It was just as well: as I turned back to Mum, Dad collapsed backwards and suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Mum was hysterical. She called the ambulance as I tried to stay calm but inside I felt mad with fear as she relayed what the 999 handler was saying. “Check if he’s breathing,” she told me. I put my hand on his chest but felt nothing. “Move him to the floor.” I laid him on the wood flooring. The call handler told Mum to begin CPR. Dad was motionless as she pushed on his chest. I’d attended first-aid training years ago, while working at a bowling alley, but remembered nothing. Something seemed off, though – the timing wasn’t right. Then I remembered The Office. double quotation mark I took …

How paywall plus philanthropy saved The Philadelphia Inquirer

How paywall plus philanthropy saved The Philadelphia Inquirer

Newspaper boxes outside the Philadelphia Inquirer Building in February 2009. Picture: William Thomas Cain/Getty Images The CEO of the Philadelphia Inquirer has revealed how one of the oldest daily newspapers in the US came back from bankruptcy in 2015 to turn its first profit last year in more than a decade. The title was bought by its creditors in 2010 after it filed for bankruptcy and was then acquired by businessman Jerry Lenfest in 2015 who placed it into the hands of the non-profit Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Earlier this year The Inquirer revealed that 2025 saw it achieve revenue growth for the first time since 2004 an operating profit of “several millions”. CEO Lisa Hughes told Press Gazette: “This is not just a charitable entity. This is a business that has to succeed as a long-term sustainable business.” Lenfest “figured out a novel tax structure” to establish the Lenfest Institute as a nonprofit owner of a for-profit newsroom – a set-up Hughes believes was the first of its kind in the country. “I don’t …

Man destined to get Alzheimer’s saved by accidental heat therapy

Man destined to get Alzheimer’s saved by accidental heat therapy

Doug Whitney (left, pictured with his son Brian in November 2022) is genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer’s, but has so far dodged the condition Shelby Lum/Associated Press/Alamy A man in the US who was virtually guaranteed to get early-onset Alzheimer’s disease because of his genetics has somehow dodged it, possibly thanks to his inadvertent heat exposure while working as a mechanic in ship engine rooms. The case fits with growing evidence from studies in humans and other animals that suggest that heat therapy may protect against the condition. Doug Whitney’s family carries a variant of a gene called Presenilin 2, inherited from ancestors who have been traced back to a small, 18th-century Volga German village. Carriers of this mutation, which causes aberrant folding of proteins in the brain, almost always develop Alzheimer’s disease in their late 40s or early 50s. “My family has been devastated by this disease,” Whitney said in a press statement. “My mom had 13 brothers and sisters, and 10 died before they were 60 years old. It’s been a plague.” Despite …

.4B saved: Massachusetts locks in cheaper offshore wind power

$1.4B saved: Massachusetts locks in cheaper offshore wind power

Massachusetts has activated long-term contracts for Vineyard Wind, the state’s first utility-scale offshore wind project. Officials say the move will stabilize prices for 20 years and cut a projected $1.4 billion from customer electricity bills over that period. The contracts, signed by utilities on behalf of customers, are expected to deliver average direct savings of about 1.4 cents per kilowatt-hour. That’s less than half the peak power prices New England saw during a cold snap this past winter. The timing matters. During that winter, Vineyard Wind was already feeding electricity into the grid and competing in wholesale markets, and, according to the state, it consistently undercut other sources on price. Now that the contracts are in effect, those lower prices are locked in. Advertisement – scroll for more content Vineyard Wind is an 806-megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm that’s about 14 miles off the Massachusetts coast. It started producing electricity in January 2024, after construction began in late 2022. The project reached mechanical completion in Q1 2026. In 2025 alone, Vineyard Wind installed 624 MW …

MasterChef dads, compost and food banks: how I saved my recipe box leftovers from the bin | Food

Can I interest you in 23 sachets of soy sauce and half a kilo of golden linseed? If not, they’ll probably live quite happily in the back of my cupboard until a clear-out in 2032. The glut of organic potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot and aubergines I was left holding after my test to find the best recipe boxes and meal kits had a more limited shelf life. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Reduced waste is one of the top benefits of recipe box services, especially those that deliver only the exact measures of ingredients you need for the recipes you choose. But I tested nine of these services at once – including some that attempted to curry favour by sending me multiple boxes containing multiple recipes. I tried to minimise waste by distributing recipes to my extended family. When I gently nudged my 86-year-old dad, Don, to ease off the Sainsbury’s ready meals and do a little light cooking, he responded by …
