It’s back-to-school season, and Google is getting in on the academic action. The company announced on Wednesday that a dedicated student hub, featuring a suite of AI study tools, will now be available on its Gemini AI assistant and through Google Search. The dedicated study hub can be found within Gemini and contains a suite of tools, including a study notebook, customized flash cards and practice quizzes to help with research and assignments. A Google spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Students will be able to ask Gemini to dig into a topic they’re researching and then switch tasks while the tool compiles the information in the background. When the report is finished, Gemini will send a notification and be available to discuss the report’s details and participate in a question-and-answer session to help the student better understand the findings. Off the coast of Dakar, Goree Island is home to the Senegal’s first elite boarding school for girls. The Mariama Ba School of Excellence encourages its students to challenge what has traditionally been expected of girls across the predominantly Muslim West African nation. Back-to-school is nearly upon us, and as Prince George prepares to enroll at Eton College, (the alma mater of both his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry), take a look back at the test results for the British royal family. (Although, of course, there are no grade requirements to be royal). So, how did they perform when it came to their schooling? From Princess Anne to Princess Beatrice, here are the highs and lows of the royal report card… Editor’s note: The UK’s grading system works a bit differently than the SAT or letter-grading systems in the US. For A-levels, a passing grade ranges from an A (Outstanding) to an E (minimum), and a U is a failing grade. Firefighters battling a blaze at a Bedford County, Virginia, middle school encountered more than just smoke. Hiding underneath a desk in a classroom was an 8-foot python, which fire officials say started the inferno. Australia, Canada, France, Israel, Spain, Sweden, Japan, Chile, Denmark, and England. These are the nations, among others, the US has joined in issuing cell phone bans in schools. A review of the research on smartphone and other mobile device bans in schools shows mixed results regarding benefits to academic progress, school engagement, bullying, and student wellbeing. There are also plenty of scholars, as well as students and parents, who have raised concerns about negative outcomes. Some report decreased wellbeing in the first year bans were implemented, feeling less safe, and increased disciplinary measures, which in the case of suspensions, restrict access to learning, thus inadvertently offsetting potential benefits. Regardless of the opinions expressed or what the numbers show, there are more and more school systems in the US adopting cell phone ban policies, or, as our local school system in Montgomery County, MD calls it, PMD (Personal Mobile Device) Regulation. From September 2026 a new law comes into force, which will mean parents and carers in England should not have to buy more than three items of branded school uniform. Secondary and middle schools may ask for four items if a tie is one of them. The government says it hopes the new law will “ensure the cost of school uniforms is reasonable and provides the best value for money”. And it’s not just about uniforms and kits – items that students need for some school subjects can also be expensive. So are notebooks, scissors, glue sticks — just about every back-to-school item that families will load into their literal or virtual carts this summer has gone up in price at a time when American families already feel crushed by rising costs. According to one analysis of the 21 most common school supply items by the Groundwork Collaborative and The Century Foundation, two progressive think tanks, prices are up about 7.7 percent with parents paying an average of $173.45 for their school supply haul. That’s an even bigger jump than last year. Add to that an 11 percent hike in prices for school lunch essentials — from the literal tons of blueberries needed to feed young children to apple juice — and costs balloon to nearly $4,000 a year to cover supplies and meals.  That data was first shared exclusively with The 19th. Parents who spoke to CNA then expressed shock at the incident. “I never imagined such an incident happening in Singapore schools,” said Mr Cheng, whose child studies at Xinmin Secondary.  Mr Albert Hooi, another parent, said he heard police sirens after 8am. He was alerted about the incident at about 10am through Parents Gateway, an app used by schools to communicate with parents. “I was feeling very confident that I think the school has followed the safety protocol. Of course, this is all very new to us, very scared as well, but I think the school has done the right thing,” he said.
