The news comes weeks after the 49-year-old only son of Cher and the late Allman Brothers founder Gregg Allman was arrested twice in the space of three days. Days after his initial arrest for allegedly causing a disturbance at a private school with which he had no affiliation, Allman was arrested again in Windham, New Hampshire, after he allegedly broke into a home. Cher previously filed a conservatorship in December 2023, arguing at the time that Allman could not take care of himself or “manage his own financial resources” because of alleged issues with drug abuse. Allman responded to that filing by insisting he had been “clean and sober from illicit substances for over 90 days” and Cher withdrew legal proceedings. However, following the recent arrests Cher has …

Sánchez seeks to rally global left against rise of far right – POLITICO

The two-day event aims to build a counter to advancing authoritarian and far-right forces, from the nationalist right in Europe — including parties aligned with the Patriots for Europe bloc — to global politics in the age of U.S. President Donald Trump. “This is not an isolated trend,” Löfven said. “It’s a shared challenge that requires a coordinated global response.” The Barcelona program includes a leaders’ dinner on Friday followed by a day of events featuring Socialist group chief Iratxe García and European Commission Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera as well as Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum. The gathering also gives Sánchez — the event’s host — a platform to elevate his international profile as a central figure of a renewed global socialist movement. “He’s not just acting as a Spanish leader,” said a senior European Parliament official, granted anonymity to speak freely. “He’s trying to exercise European leadership.” Sánchez could be eyeing a future role in Brussels, potentially challenging European Council President António Costa when the post …

NCAA seeks faster trial over DraftKings disputed March Madness branding case

NCAA seeks faster trial over DraftKings disputed March Madness branding case

The NCAA is asking a federal judge in Indiana to speed up its trademark fight with DraftKings, saying the normal court calendar could let the sportsbook ride another March Madness wave before the dispute is decided. In a filing reviewed by ReadWrite and dated Wednesday (April 15) in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the association asked to move an initial pretrial conference forward and set a compressed schedule that could send the case to trial in February 2027. The group says timing matters because the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments create a short, valuable burst of attention every spring. In its motion, the NCAA said, “DraftKings’s challenged conduct is closely tied to the annual rhythm of the marquee collegiate sporting events, during which consumer engagement is at its peak and the value of the NCAA Basketball Marks is at its highest.” It then warned the court that “Absent an accelerated timeline, DraftKings is likely to continue to exploit that cycle, causing ongoing harm to the NCAA.” NCAA March Madness court …

6,000 Meters Under the Pacific, Japan Seeks Independence From China on Rare Earths

6,000 Meters Under the Pacific, Japan Seeks Independence From China on Rare Earths

It’s called Minamitorishima, and it’s a small atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most remote islands in Japan’s vast archipelago, so much so that it lies nearly 2,000 kilometers southeast of Tokyo. Yet from the depths of the surrounding seas may come a tremendous gift for the country’s economy. It is there, as deep as 6,000 meters undersea, that a group of Japanese researchers succeeded in a veritable mission impossible: the recovery of sediments containing rare-earth elements from one of the most promising underwater deposits discovered in recent years. The feat is set to strengthen Japan’s role in the increasingly crucial rare earths sector, a central element in the trade war between China and the United States. Indeed, Japan is the only major industrial country that, while remaining partially exposed, has managed to significantly reduce its dependence on Beijing. The “Mission Impossible” in the Pacific Seabed The Minamitorishima operation, conducted with the scientific deep-sea drilling vessel Chikyu, represents the world’s first attempt to sample at such depths. The Japanese government called …

Earlier this month, the rapper’s three-date headline show at Wireless Festival in London was canceled after he was denied a visa over his repeated antisemitic comments. Now, a spokesperson for French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has told Politico that the government is “very determined” to stop the June concert at the Marseille Vélodrome and is exploring “every possibility” to stop it. He has the support of Marseille mayor Benoît Payan, who last month tweeted: “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism. Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome.” French newspaper Le Monde reports that Nuñez has spoken to Payan, as well as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur prefect Jacques Witkowski, but that France’s highest administrative court has ruled that “local …
