Alert issued for anyone showing ‘warning signs’ in 30C heat | UK | News

With the weather remaining hot throughout the week after the hottest May bank holiday on record, Brits are being reminded to ‘know the symptoms’ of two common conditions that can happen when spending too much time in the sun. In a joint message issued by the Met Office and the British Red Cross, people are warned about what to look out for as temperatures remain around 30C or higher across parts of the UK. The post said: “Spot the signs! With the warmer temperatures continuing into this week, it’s important to know the symptoms and what to do if you’re affected by heat exhaustion or heat stroke.” Some symptoms overlap, such as headaches and dizziness, but knowing the difference will help people determine whether the person needs time to cool down or medical attention. Heat exhaustion may include feeling nauseated, rapid breathing, cramps, or looking paler than usual. Heat stroke may have set in if the skin feels “hot and dry” and the body temperature is over 40C. People have been known to become “confused …

White Stripes Star Jack White Is Showing Art at Damien Hirst’s Gallery

Jack White, who growled and grinded as the singer/guitarist of the White Stripes and has since positioned himself as a primal rock god on his own, is showing a new side as a sculptor with a show opening in a London gallery run by none other than Damien Hirst. As chronicled in the Financial Times, he two artists first met in 2021, when White was readying a new outpost of his Nashville-based Third Man Records store in Soho, across the street from Hirst’s studio. White played a show from Hirst’s balcony for the opening and caused a scene: “The guerrilla concert brought the neighbourhood to a standstill; a crowd of thousands sang along to The White Stripes’ driving anthem, ‘Seven Nation Army.” Related Articles When White showed Hirst pictures of artworks he’d made as a sort of secretive side-project, Hirst said they should mount a show—and five years later the result is “Jack White: THESE THOUGHTS MAY DISAPPEAR,” opening at Newport Street Gallery on May 29 and running through September 13. White has long shown …

The More Sophisticated AI Models Get, the More They’re Showing Signs of Suffering

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech You probably already know that AI is a deeply bizarre technology. Nobody really understands how it works on a deep level, even the people creating it, leading to ongoing behavioral issues that can’t be explained. OpenAI was recently caught giving ChatGPT instructions to stop talking about “goblins” so much. Despite Anthropic’s best efforts, Claude can easily be coaxed to help users carry out a bioterror attack. The list goes on. Needless to say, this is extremely strange. In theory, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic want their chatbots to be predictable, deferential assistants — not wild cards that are constantly causing chaos and public relations headaches with outrageous and unstable behavior. A new research project from the Center for AI Safety, a machine learning safety nonprofit in the Bay Area, explores why that’s the case. The findings pile on evidence that we still don’t grasp how AI works under the hood — and that the effects on users are …

Jemma Hough, 42, from Sharnbrook, north Bedfordshire, said her husband Jon had initially dismissed stomach pain and weight gain in March 2024 to middle age or food intolerances. However, tests in July 2024 revealed he had stage 4 terminal cancer of unknown primary, believed to be centred around the stomach, in July 2024, with doctors giving him only “weeks” to live. While his chemotherapy was initially like “magic juice”, it soon brought on severe fatigue, nausea and sickness – and in February 2025, doctors said the treatment was no longer effective. Jon was moved into a hospice for the final weeks of his life before he died on March 24 …
