New computer simulation reveals exactly how gas giants form

New simulations suggest gas giants can build roughly 10-Earth-mass solid cores in about 200,000 years when icy pebbles drifting inward from the outer disk grow into planetesimals before being swept up by embryos. Instead of relying mainly on inefficient direct pebble capture, the process concentrates solid material between roughly 6 and 9 astronomical units, where relatively small planetesimals can feed planetary cores rapidly. The model offers a possible solution to the long-standing problem of forming Jupiter-like planets before their gas disks disappear or their growing cores migrate too close to their stars. Building something as massive as Jupiter presents planetary scientists with a timing problem. A giant planet must assemble a large solid core while plenty of hydrogen and helium still surrounds its young star, yet conventional planet-building processes can take too long. Computer simulations now suggest a possible shortcut. Icy particles born far from a young star can drift inward, collide and grow into larger bodies that pile up in a relatively narrow region of the protoplanetary disk. I switched to a few more games and found that Red Dead Redemption 2 on an Xbox Series X looked pretty good, if a little too atmospheric. That’s a kind way of saying the contrast is not great. At times, it seemed like the projected image had more in common with an LCD computer monitor than a home cinema projector. The GT2400HDR disappointed in its handling of what should be impressive updated graphics in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Instead of rich, vibrant-looking trees, they looked too bland, with flat, dull greens. In Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, the colors in a level that takes place in Havana should pop when you walk through the town, but the blue tunics, yellow fruit, and green trees lacked vibrancy. If reality is a simulation, isn’t the idea that reality is a simulation itself a simulation? Then reality must be real — correct? If only it were that simple. Every age builds its cosmology from its most advanced machines while keeping the old myths running in the background. The clockmakers gave us a clockwork universe; the industrial age, a body and psyche engine of classical forces; now, in the age of computation, quantum mechanics, and AI, a growing number of thoughtful people suspect reality itself is a very sophisticated program. Do We Really Live in an AI Simulation?

The simulation hypothesis has become one of the most popular philosophical ideas of the last two decades. The modern formulation by AI analyst Nick Bostrom1 is simple: perhaps the universe we experience is not fundamental reality at all. It is a computer simulation running inside another, more fundamental world. Our world is not then fundamental reality, but rather a simulated reality running inside a greater world that serves as its foundation. The idea owes much of its popularity to a seemingly straightforward observation. Every generation of computers produces simulations that are more detailed and more realistic than the last. If technology continues advancing, perhaps one day we will simulate entire worlds populated by intelligent beings. If we could eventually build such simulations, perhaps someone else has already done so. Perhaps we are living inside one of them. Many philosophers and scientists have already examined and questioned the simulation hypothesis, arguing that it is either unlikely, unsupported by evidence, or problematic under certain assumptions about consciousness and computation2–5. As I mention often on this blog, I have a great interest in the universe—astrophysics, quantum mechanics, cosmology, all that stuff. With that, I’m no expert in any of it. I just enjoy reading and watching videos about it. Recently, I’ve found myself being fed the same headlines over and over again—that the universe is actually a simulation—an idea that’s been around a while, but really seems to be getting a push in my algorithm. I’ve even seen a few pieces argue for the increased likelihood that we live in a simulation in light of how many “scientists”/”experts” now believe it themselves. As I also often argue here, if most experts agree on something, then we should probably give them the benefit of the doubt when we’re not experts in that field. However, as critical thinkers, it is still up to us to confirm the credibility of this expertise and determine whether the experts actually do agree and believe it themselves, and so, that’s what I did here. Physicists just debunked the idea that we’re living in a simulation

For years, the idea that reality might be a giant computer simulation has lived comfortably in science fiction, philosophy, and parts of popular physics. Mir Faizal’s latest work pushes hard in the opposite direction. If his argument holds, the universe is not just unsimulated in practice. It could never be fully simulated at all. That matters because modern physics has often moved in the other direction, toward more formal and more unified descriptions of nature. Newton’s mechanics described masses moving through fixed space and time. Einstein then rewrote that picture by joining space and time into spacetime, where geometry depends on the observer. Quantum mechanics delivered another shock, replacing certainty with probabilities and making measurement itself part of the puzzle. Together, relativity and quantum theory explain a huge range of phenomena. They also refuse to fit neatly together under extreme conditions.
