Battlefield Movie in the Works from Michael B. Jordan, Chris McQuarrie

Battlefield Movie in the Works from Michael B. Jordan, Chris McQuarrie

As the week comes to a close, the groundwork is being laid for what could be the biggest bidding war of the year. And it’s, appropriately enough, for Battlefield, the military video game which last year topped the sales charts. And if the title wasn’t enticing enough, it comes with some of the biggest names in Hollywood: Chrsitopher McQuarrie, who has spent the last dozen years guiding field operations for Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible movies, and Michael B. Jordan, who last month won an Oscar for his performance in Sinners. McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce a feature adaptation of Battlefield, the military video game from Electronic Arts, while Jordan is attached to produce and possibly star, depending on several factors. This hot package, which also includes EA as a producer, is currently before studios, who are already marshaling their interest. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that McQuarrie and several others pitched studios and streamers such as Apple and Sony Thursday with other meetings occurring Friday. Those involved are prioritizing a …

Sinners director Ryan Coogler developing new adaptation of best-selling book series that previously inspired cult TV show

Sinners director Ryan Coogler developing new adaptation of best-selling book series that previously inspired cult TV show

Ryan Coogler is lining up his next major TV project, with a new adaptation of the hugely popular Animorphs novels in early development at Disney+. The acclaimed filmmaker – fresh from Oscar success for Sinners – will executive produce the series, with writer Bayan Wolcott attached to pen the project, Variety reports. Based on the best-selling book series by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant, Animorphs follows a group of teenagers who discover a secret alien invasion and gain the ability to morph into animals in order to fight back. The series blends sci-fi action with coming-of-age drama, as the characters balance high school life with a covert war for Earth’s survival. First published in 1996, the franchise became a global phenomenon, spanning 54 main books and selling more than 35 million copies worldwide. This won’t be the first time the series has been adapted for the screen. A live-action Animorphs show aired on Nickelodeon between 1998 and 2000, running for two seasons and later gaining a cult following among fans of the books. Want to …

Why ‘Sinners’ resonates with Jews

Why ‘Sinners’ resonates with Jews

(RNS) — When the envelopes were opened at the 98th Academy Awards, one film dominated the evening: “One Battle After Another,” the political epic by Paul Thomas Anderson that took home six Oscars, including Best Picture. But the second most celebrated film of the night was “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, which won four Academy Awards: Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman ever to win in the category. When I watched “Sinners,” it first felt like a Spike Lee drama about the experiences of Black Americans. The movie takes place in the Mississippi Delta in the early 1930s. The protagonists are two gangster brothers, Smoke and Stack, identical twins, played by Michael B. Jordan, who dream of opening a juke joint. Before long, the Spike Lee sensibility gave way to something closer to Jordan Peele — a supernatural horror film in the tradition of “Get Out” and “Us.” But beneath the genre shifts, the movie …

Sinners racked up four Oscar wins last night, for original screenplay, lead actor, cinematography, and score. To celebrate, we’re sharing this list again, so read on for six books to read if you loved Sinners! By the time I saw Ryan Coogler’s Sinners last week, it felt like I was already behind. The movie seemed to take hold of moviegoers’ attention as soon as it was released—though this didn’t come without a bit of oddly disparaging framing by certain outlets. Still, the movie has been on everyone’s minds, with many people reporting seeing it two or three times in theaters. Unsurprisingly, this also means there have been a number of think pieces and, yes, book lists. I tried my best to avoid these before seeing the movie myself so that I could form my own opinion. I have to say that, even with its more extravagant and fantastical elements, I was able to slip into a familiarity that …

How ‘One Battle’ Beat ‘Sinners,’ Jordan Overcame Chalamet

How ‘One Battle’ Beat ‘Sinners,’ Jordan Overcame Chalamet

An awards season that often felt like an endurance test — talk about one battle after another — came to an end on Sunday evening with the 98th Academy Awards. The results at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood confirmed that even though the Academy has changed significantly over the decade since it was rocked by #OscarsSoWhite — its membership today includes way more non-males, non-whites, non-Americans and non-AARP-members than ever before — the statistics that have long offered clues about Oscars outcomes remain dependable. Indeed, despite all the talk of a late Sinners surge, One Battle After Another still won the top prize, best picture, just as it did at every other notable awards ceremony this season — from the Gothams to the Golden Globes to the guilds, not to mention all the major critics groups, plus the BAFTA Awards — save for the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) two weeks ago. It was easy to get swept up in the excitement of Sinners’ best cast win at the Actor Awards — the reaction in the room was …

Michael B. Jordan’s Oscars Advice Mirrors Timothee Chalamet Slogan

Michael B. Jordan’s Oscars Advice Mirrors Timothee Chalamet Slogan

After winning best actor at the 2026 Oscars, Sinners star Michael B. Jordan offered encouraging words for other artists looking to sink their teeth into pursuing a passion. While speaking at the press room after accepting the Academy Award, the star was asked what this victory should signify to rising creatives. Jordan starred with a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler‘s Warner Bros. drama that landed a leading 16 Oscar nominations before winning in four categories. “My father always told me, ‘Don’t expect anything to be handed to you,’” Jordan said backstage. “You do the work, and everything else will figure itself out.” The Creed star acknowledged that the Oscar represents “a pinnacle” of his industry and that it can be easy to feel competitive about winning one. He also added, “At the same time, what’s for you is for you, and you can’t listen to anybody else. I’m just walking my path. I would encourage other actors and other artists, no matter what their medium is, to try to keep …

Oscars 2026 Recap: Highlights, Winners

Oscars 2026 Recap: Highlights, Winners

One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson’s wry look at activism and radicalism in a time drenched in both, won best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay among a host of other prizes at a celebratory if at times pointed Oscars Sunday night. “There is no best among them; there is just what the mood is that day,” Anderson said, citing the 1976 Oscars and its deep bench to make a point about the good company in this one. The auteur was accepting the best picture prize, his third Oscar of the night after a 30-year career in which he had previously won zero. Indeed, a slew of first-time winners dominated the telecast of the 2026 Oscars, with strong supporting appearances from politics and late Hollywood legends. An acclaimed veteran filmmaker (Ryan Coogler), an acclaimed even more veteran filmmaker (Anderson), an acclaimed veteran actor (Michael B. Jordan) and an acclaimed even more veteran actress (Amy Madigan) all won statuettes for the first time. Ditto for a KPop song (“Golden”), an Irish woman competing for …

One Battle After Another Beats Sinners for Best Picture at Oscars 2026

One Battle After Another Beats Sinners for Best Picture at Oscars 2026

It was a battle no more at the 2026 Oscars: One Battle After Another won best picture over Sinners, the most nominated movie in Academy history. Paul Thomas Anderson became a first-time Oscar winner tonight three times over, with his additional victories in best director and adapted screenplay. Producer Sara Murphy began their speech by calling One Battle “the greatest filmmaking experience I can fathom,” adding, “My heart is exploding with gratitude.” The 13-time-nominated film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, claimed victories in best picture, best director, adapted screenplay, supporting actor for Sean Penn, editing, and casting, bringing its total to six Oscar wins. Heading into the 2026 Oscars, One Battle After Another dominated awards season and was favored to win best picture, even by this very publication. The political odyssey won top honors at the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards—the latter the most accurate best-picture predictor among the precursor awards leading up to the Oscars. It appeared that OBAA had best picture in the bag, although Ryan …
