Autumn Durald Arkapaw of ‘Sinners’ becomes first woman with Oscars win for best cinematography

Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history Sunday night when she took home the Academy Award for best cinematography in Ryan Coogler’s Southern gothic, genre-bending film “Sinners.” Arkapaw asked all the women in the room to stand up during her acceptance speech because “I don’t get here without you.” “I have felt so much love from all the women on this whole campaign and gotten to meet so many people, and I just feel like moments like this happen because of you guys,” she said. Arkapaw is also the first Black cinematographer to win this award. Director Ryan Coogler and director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw during the filming of “Sinners.”Eli Adé / Warner Bros. Director Coogler and Arkapaw took on an immense task when they decided to make “Sinners” the first film shot entirely in two different large formats: Ultra Panavision 70 and Imax. Their approach was historic not only because it was the first time these two formats had ever been combined on a feature. It was also the first time a woman cinematographer had …

‘I Lied to You’ Sinners Oscars 2026 Performance

Miles Caton, Raphael Saadiq and the Sinners family hit the Dolby Theatre at the 2026 Oscars to perform a smashing rendition of the nominated song “I Lied to You.” The first of two performances from the best original song nominees, Saadiq, co-writer of the song, kicked off the performance as Caton followed him to perform the genre-blending track. Mirroring the scene from the film where his character Sammie Moore performs the song, the act featured a number of performers and musical sounds from across time periods and cultures. Caton, who sings the vocals for the song, was joined by a few of his co-stars onstage, including Li Jun Li, Jayme Lawson and Jack O’Connell. A myriad of artists were also included in the performance, including Grammy-winner Shaboozey, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy (who plays an older Sammie Moore in Sinners), Alice Smith, Brittany Howard, Bobby Rush and retired American Ballet Theatre dancer Misty Copeland. After the performance was over, the cameras panned over to director Ryan Coogler and best actor nominee Michael B. …

Oscars 2026 Live Updates: ‘Sinners’ and ‘One Battle After Another’ Start Their Final Showdown

The time has come: The Oscars 2026 are upon us, bringing together Hollywood’s biggest names for a ceremony where it feels like anything might be possible. Often, going into the Academy Awards, it seems that most of the major categories are already set in stone due to the outcomes of various precursors like the Golden Globes and the Actor Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards). But this year, several of them feel up in the air—including best actor (seemingly a two-man race between Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet) and best picture—following a round of nominations marked by unexpected snubs and pleasant surprises (like the late surge of the Brazilian film The Secret Agent). Before the red carpet kicks off and returning host Conan O’Brien takes the stage at the Dolby Theatre, get ready for the show by filling out your final ballot, reminding yourself what happened at the 2025 Oscars, and checking out our best-dressed leaderboard, where you can choose which star deserves to be named queen (or king) of awards season. The case for Sinners to win best picture at 2026 Oscars

The case for Sinners to win best picture at 2026 Oscars

From the moment Sinners hit cinema screens back in April of last year, it was clear that it would be a contender in the Hollywood awards race. There was immediate critical acclaim for everything from storytelling and soundtrack to casting and cinematography, which culminated in 16 Oscar nominations – the most received by a single film in history. But now, as 98th Academy Awards draws near, Sinners has increasingly felt like a worthy winner of the best picture Oscar. Yet another impressive outing from writer/director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station) and star Michael B Jordan (Creed, Without Remorse), Sinners is set in Jim Crow-era Mississippi and follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Jordan) as they return to their hometown and open a juke joint, which reunites them with friends and loved ones like their cousin, Sammie ‘Preacher Boy’ Moore (Miles Caton). But what starts as a night of celebration for the Blues soon descends into destruction as the vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell) arrives with a trail of blood in his wake. The acclaim for …

2026 ICG Publicists Awards Winners Announced

Kate Hudson and Jimmy Kimmel expressed their gratitude for the publicity side of the entertainment business as they accepted special honors at the 2026 ICG Publicists Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills Friday afternoon. “Making movies is an extraordinary process; it doesn’t end when we wrap,” said Song Sung Blue Oscar nominee Hudson as she accepted the award for Motion Picture Showperson of the Year. “We are also tasked with bringing that magic to audiences, and publicity is a huge part of that. I’m the showperson and you’re the ship.” Kimmel, who was presented with the President’s Award, a rare honor only handed out in the case of extraordinary circumstances, thanked the guild for the recognition in light of his suspension last September following remarks about Donald Trump and the murder of Charlie Kirk. “The reason I’m here is to thank you for 23 years of partnership and support,” Kimmel stated. “I would like to dedicate this to those of you who work so hard to shine a light on everyone …

“Sinners” should win, but always bet on the Oscars to disappoint

“Sinners” should win, but always bet on the Oscars to disappoint

Time is a tricky concept. We have horological tools to measure it and chronological methods to give it order, yet in other respects, time is entirely subject to human whim. Equity and justice are guaranteed to some people over others, who hear over decades and centuries that, eventually, time’s passage will magically set the world right. Meanwhile, other people’s golden hours arrive because of some arbitrary determination that they are due. Those tracking expert predictions leading up to the 98th Academy Awards know the competition to watch is between “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another,” going toe-to-toe in 11 categories. Some races have been deemed toss-ups, others are foregone conclusions. Less often spoken of is the role that Hollywood’s cultural politics play in determining the winners. In the vague clockwork of industry deservedness, the odds have always favored Paul Thomas Anderson. The Academy has been jonesing so hard to hand the man an Oscar that it nominated the dreadful “Licorice Pizza” a couple of years ago. “One Battle After Another,” an action-heavy tale about revolutionaries …

Kerry Washington, Chase Infiniti Honored at Black Women in Hollywood

LaTanya Richardson Jackson delivered a brief but powerful message at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon Thursday, where she was honored alongside Kerry Washington, Chase Infiniti and the women of Sinners at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. “Work hard, I can’t reiterate that enough,” said Richardson Jackson. “You have to work hard. Work to know your business and then learn who and what. Then be bold enough to make space for the unimaginable, and then be brave enough to embrace it. This is really going to sound deep, but think about it. Learn the language of the invisible so that your presence always speaks,” she added before acknowledging her fellow honorees and delivering final remarks: “Wake up, stay woke, because we who believe in freedom will not rest until it comes.” Infiniti was recognized as a rising star in a presentation by her One Battle After Another co-star Teyana Taylor, whom she thanked for being one of the Black women who has helped guide her in the early days of her acting career. …
