Oura Adds Clinical Care for Members Seeking Solutions to Chronic Sleep Problems

Oura Adds Clinical Care for Members Seeking Solutions to Chronic Sleep Problems

Oura is taking a page from other wearable tech trends and connecting members to clinical care providers. Oura announced on Tuesday that it’s partnering with sleep health tech company Resmed to provide more sleep education and connect its members with virtual or in-person healthcare providers. The Oura Ring is already known for its sleep and health tracking, and this feature aims to help more people sleep better and improve their health.  According to a recent Resmed survey, more adults are relying on wearables for sleep tracking, but many continue to experience poor sleep. With the latest update, Oura will now send notifications advising members to see a Resmed healthcare provider if their sleep data shows high levels of sleep disturbances.  Members will connect to Resmed’s sleep health resources, such as educational content, a sleep assessment and virtual or in-person connections with a healthcare provider.  Dr. Ricky Bloomfield, chief medical officer at Oura, said in a statement, “By pairing Oura’s continuous insights into sleep and nighttime breathing with Resmed’s sleep expertise, we’re giving people clearer tools and education to spot …

How L-Theanine Can Help You Stay Calm and Sleep Better

How L-Theanine Can Help You Stay Calm and Sleep Better

L-theanine lattes are the new mushroom coffee—and, fortunately, a lot better tasting. In LA, you’ll find the amino acid on the menu at influencer hot spot Alfred Coffee in its Bolt Energy drink, paired with biotin and B vitamins. Beyond Juicery+Eatery (which has locations in 48 states) has it in their Iced Functional Lattes. And it’s not just popping up in lattes. L-theanine is a core ingredient in NA drinks like Trip (which has taken over Whole Foods everywhere), Recess’s adaptogenic Mood beverages, and Hiyo social tonics. Why the sudden obsession and, more importantly, is it worth the hype? We talked to functional-medicine doctors to find out. What is l-theanine? L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid that can be found naturally in green, black, and oolong teas, says Yoshua Quinones, MD, an internal medicine doctor with Medical Offices of Manhattan and a contributor to LabFinder. It works as an antioxidant in the body, helping to reduce inflammation. “It’s well-known for its effect of feeling calm yet alert,” Dr. Quinones says. If you’re a matcha drinker, …

Nearly half of teens are losing critical sleep by staying up too late on their phones

Nearly half of teens are losing critical sleep by staying up too late on their phones

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore American teenagers are losing valuable sleep time because they are spending too much late-night time on their phones, new research shows, with consequences for their health and academic performance. Growing teens need at least 8-10 hours each night to help stave off the risk of problems with attention, poor mental health and chronic disease like obesity and diabetes, according to federal guidance. But the majority of 657 adolescents across the country still average about 50 minutes of smartphone use between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on school nights, using social media apps, streaming and playing games. Almost half of them used their phones between midnight and 4 a.m. Jason Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco, says the findings about teens’ phone use need to be addressed. “That’s a really critical …

Waking Up At Night? Sleep Experts Explain How Many Times It's Normal To Be Awake

Waking Up At Night? Sleep Experts Explain How Many Times It's Normal To Be Awake

Johns Hopkins Medicine says we have mini wake-ups about 20 times a night, but don’t remember or observe the experience Did you know that getting up at night to pee has a name (nocturia)?  Not only that, but it turns out there are “normal” amounts of midnight number ones to expect by age, too. Younger people usually get up to urinate once a night, while those in their 90s may still be in the “usual” range if they make four trips in the wee hours.  But not all nocturnal disruptions are to do with the loo. According to a 2010 study, just under a third of us wake up in the middle of the night at least three times a week; while older research found 23% of us get up a minimum of once a night.  And according to experts at the Sleep Foundation, those numbers might be affected by age, as after 60, they say, our circadian rhythm changes.  What’s a normal amount of times to get up at night? As teens, our circadian …

Scientists Explain Whether You Should Drink Coffee Before Or After Breakfast

Scientists Explain Whether You Should Drink Coffee Before Or After Breakfast

Though drinking more than three or four cups of coffee a day might be bad for us, a growing body of research suggests that coffee drinkers might live longer and even age better. This may be especially true if we opt for black coffee with no sugar. And according to a 2020 paper in the British Journal Of Nutrition, when we drink our morning cup of Joe matters too. Is it better to drink coffee before or after breakfast? The scientists recorded participants’ blood responses to different consumption habits after a disrupted night’s sleep and a normal night’s sleep. On one day, participants were given a glucose drink on waking from an uninterrupted sleep; on another, a glucose drink after a bad night’s kip; and on yet another day, a cup of coffee before the glucose drink (also after poor sleep). The glucose drink was meant to mimic the nutritional content of a “normal” breakfast. In this study, the researchers found that one night of bad sleep did not significantly negatively affect healthy participants’ metabolism. …

But – and I’m sure I don’t need to spell it out to you – that’s not exactly a thrifty pursuit. There’s just something about the weather shifting that means my current mattress, pillows, and duvet suddenly feel inadequate. Unfortunately for me, it’s simply not sustainable to own one mattress for the warm weather and one for colder climes. So, when I heard that my favourite bedding company, Simba, has an offer on that just gives you a free duvet, mattress topper, or pillows when you invest in a new mattress, I practically ran to …

Poor sleep and endless video scrolling form a predictable behavioral loop

Poor sleep and endless video scrolling form a predictable behavioral loop

Scrolling through endless feeds of short videos can disrupt a good night of sleep, but poor sleep might also fuel the drive to keep scrolling in a continuous loop. Researchers found that daytime tiredness acts as a gateway symptom, making individuals more vulnerable to losing control over their video consumption. The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. Short-form media platforms have changed how people consume digital content. Applications feature brief clips paired with advanced recommendation codes that learn exactly what users want to watch. This specific design lowers the mental barrier to entry and promotes continuous viewing. Viewers often experience a state of deep absorption and completely lose track of time. Medical manuals do not officially recognize short video consumption as a formal psychiatric disorder. Mental health professionals instead describe excessive, uncontrolled viewing habits as a behavioral problem. People report feelings of mental withdrawal when separated from the applications. They also use the content as a method of escapism, dodging daily responsibilities in favor of an easily accessible digital distraction. A …

Too much and too little sleep linked to faster aging

Too much and too little sleep linked to faster aging

Sleep has long been tied to memory, mood, and heart health. A new analysis suggests its reach may be even broader, touching the pace of aging across much of the body. In a study led by researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, both too little sleep and too much sleep were linked to signs of faster biological aging in several organs, including the brain, lungs, liver, immune system, and pancreas. Importantly, the pattern held across different kinds of biological data, from blood-based proteins and metabolites to MRI scans. “Previous studies have found that sleep is largely linked to aging and the pathological burden of the brain. Our study goes further and shows that too little and too much sleep are associated with faster aging in nearly every organ. This supports the idea that sleep is important in maintaining organ health within a coordinated brain-body network, including metabolic balance and a healthy immune system,” said Junhao Wen, assistant professor of radiology at Columbia and the study’s leader. The findings were published in …

Why Your Body Jerks Awake When You Fall Asleep, According To Research
