At least 5 die in horror blast at South Korean defence company plant | World | News

Five people have died and two others were injured on Monday after an explosion and fire at a defense company in South Korea, official said. The incident took place on production line at a factory for rocket propellant operated by Hanwha Aerospace 012450.KS, located in the city of Daejeon. The cause of the explosion is not currently known. Emergency official Yoon Seong-su said that the area is a government-designated security facility. At least one of the people injured is in critical conditions, medical official Kim Ju-yeon said. It is understood the victims have not been identified yet. The five dead included two temporary workers in their 20s and all were employed by Hanwha, the company said. The company’s chief executive officer Son Jae-il said “we bow our heads in apology to the victims and their bereaved families”. Seoul immediately stopped operations at the security facility and deployed a massive Level 1 emergency response to the incident. Lebanon’s prime minister accused Israel on Saturday of pursuing a “scorched-earth policy” in his country’s south, urging a halt to the fighting as Israel carried out fresh airstrikes and issued evacuation warnings for more than a dozen locations. A day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces had advanced deeper into Lebanon, his counterpart Nawaf Salam warned the country was facing a “dangerous” escalation, and called for “a swift and real ceasefire”. In a televised address, Salam accused Israel of “pursuing a scorched-earth policy and collective punishment” by “destroying towns and villages, and forcing their inhabitants into exile”. (AP) — President Donald Trump endorsed three Republican gubernatorial candidates Friday, wading into contests in South Carolina, Iowa and Oklahoma that have pitted allies against each other in a fierce competition for their party leader’s blessing. In a trio of social media posts, Trump gave his backing to South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra and former Oklahoma state senator Mike Mazzei as primary elections approach. Iowa’s primary is Tuesday, South Carolina’s is on June 9 and Oklahoma’s is on June 16. All three states are having their first competitive Republican gubernatorial primaries in years. Emergency services rushed to a street in Elephant and Castle, South London, following reports that people had fallen from a height. A child, a woman, and a man died after falling from a tower block. The emergency services raced to Churchyard Row, Elephant and Castle, at about 7.30am on Wednesday, 27 May, but all three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Metropolitan Police said “work is underway to formally identify those who died”. Their next of keen have been informed, the force also said.
