Passengers ‘thrown out of their seats’ on speeding train heading to Nottingham
Passengers on a train to Nottingham were ‘thrown out of their seats’, resulting in injuries, during an over-speeding rail incident. The train, operated by Northern, reached speeds as high as 70mph in a 30mph zone, also causing some passengers to fall to the floor. The incident happened at 1.47pm on May 4, as the 12.09pm service from Leeds to Nottingham was passing through the Trowell North and South junctions in Nottinghamshire. At the junctions, the train was routed over five sets of points for a diverging route which had a permitted speed of 30mph (48km/h). The train traversed the first set of points at 70mph (112km/h) and was still travelling at 45mph (72km/h) when it reached the last set of points. Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the signals on approach to the junctions were displaying the correct indications for the diverging route.
