The Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel was propelled by an incredible opening weekend, with a record-setting $360 million domestic debut out of its $932 million worldwide box office total. The Marvel blockbuster, which stars Tom Holland as the web-slinging superhero, achieved the feat after being released three weekends ago. In terms of time taken to reach $2 billion, that places the film behind only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which took just 11 days to pull off a similar box office haul. As Variety reported, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s receipts are split between the $785 million the film grossed in North America and a further $1.23 billion overseas. It’s official total now stands at $2.022 billion. This has been a terrific year for movie theaters. Cinemas are on course for their best financial year since before the coronavirus pandemic, powered by large-scale hits such as The Odyssey and surprise small-budget smashes, particularly Obsession and Backrooms. Fears about the decline of the big-screen experience amid the rise of at-home streaming seem to have begun dissipating. But one theatrical stalwart is showing serious signs of weakness: the superhero movie, which helped keep blockbusters afloat for most of the 2010s. It’s dinosaur mayhem at the box office as two newcomers about the prehistoric beasts — The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie — set out to challenge the behemoth that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Warner Bros. releases director David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street in 3,400 North American theaters on Friday, with the studio projecting an opening weekend in the range of $18 million to $23 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day held its grip atop China‘s box office for a second weekend, pulling in $28.9 million (RMB 196.6 million) over the Aug. 7-9 frame for a local total of $185.4 million (RMB 1.26 billion) in 12 days.  The Sony tentpole launched in China with a massive $121.3 million five-day haul, of which $19 million came from Imax, a record for the format in the market.
