In its third week at the box office, the newest installment of the superhero series has become the eighth highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing $2 billion in global ticket sales. The Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel was propelled by an incredible opening weekend, with a record-setting $360 million domestic debut out of its $932 million worldwide box office total. Insiders told The Wrap that the British actor, 30, was paid $20 million upfront for the blockbuster. That means he has the potential to receive another $80 million or more in backend bonuses, which are typically paid out to actors and directors once a movie covers its production and distribution costs. The Marvel blockbuster, which stars Tom Holland as the web-slinging superhero, achieved the feat after being released three weekends ago. In terms of time taken to reach $2 billion, that places the film behind only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which took just 11 days to pull off a similar box office haul. As Variety reported, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s receipts are split between the $785 million the film grossed in North America and a further $1.23 billion overseas. It’s official total now stands at $2.022 billion. The seven other films that have made over $2 billion at the box office are: 2009’s Avatar ($2.9 billion), 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion), 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 …

Spider-Man Is Hollywood’s Most Invincible Superhero

Spider-Man Is Hollywood’s Most Invincible Superhero

This has been a terrific year for movie theaters. Cinemas are on course for their best financial year since before the coronavirus pandemic, powered by large-scale hits such as The Odyssey and surprise small-budget smashes, particularly Obsession and Backrooms. Fears about the decline of the big-screen experience amid the rise of at-home streaming seem to have begun dissipating. But one theatrical stalwart is showing serious signs of weakness: the superhero movie, which helped keep blockbusters afloat for most of the 2010s. Marvel’s most anticipated title last year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps—which reintroduced the fan-favorite comic-book team—failed to meet the studio’s lofty expectations; this June’s DC Comics adaptation of Supergirl was an out-and-out bomb. By those metrics, one might have predicted a similar slump for this summer’s new Spider-Man sequel, subtitled Brand New Day. Instead, it has broken nearly every box-office record imaginable. That the film has been able to defy mounting superhero fatigue may seem unexpected. After all, Brand New Day is the fourth Spider-Man entry set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which owns …

Tramell Tillman Can Finally Talk About ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and His MCU Role

Tramell Tillman Can Finally Talk About ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and His MCU Role

You’ve spoken at length before about how your experiences working in corporate America through your twenties heavily influenced your approach to playing Mr. Milchick on Severance. More specifically you’ve noted that he’s a bit of an amalgamation of a few people you met in offices during those days. Was there a similar real-life frame of reference for this corporate antagonist? I lean more into the politician analogy for Metzger. I had this inkling that Metzger had just a little bit of swag, a little smoothness. So the politician who came to mind immediately was President Barack Obama. There’s a fullness, a calmness, a steadiness there. I borrowed a little bit of that and marinated it in my own flavor, because we have to believe Metzger. We have to trust him. Destin mentioned in a recent Interview story that you had an R&B playlist for Metzger that you listened to on set. What was on that? I won’t say what’s on it because my process, that journey, it’s very personal to me. But I will give …

End of Oak Street Box Office Opening Targets Spider-Man: Brand New Day

It’s dinosaur mayhem at the box office as two newcomers about the prehistoric beasts — The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie — set out to challenge the behemoth that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Warner Bros. releases director David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street in 3,400 North American theaters on Friday, with the studio projecting an opening weekend in the range of $18 million to $23 million. Warner Bros. expects to add between $20 million to $25 million internationally for the sci-fi survival movie that hails from Bad Robot and carries an $80 million production budget. Anne Hathaway continues her busy 2026, leading the cast that also includes Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. Mitchell, known for the 2014 horror hit It Follows, helmed the movie from his own script about a family in the early 1980s as they realize that their suburban neighborhood has been transported to an area with prehistoric predators. The End of Oak Street holds an 82 percent approval rating from critics on …

The Star Wars: Ahsoka actor, 47, was originally expected to appear in the latest Marvel blockbuster as her Daredevil character Claire Temple/Night Nurse. But her scene was ultimately “cut out,” she revealed last month at GalaxyCon Raleigh 2026. “I told my mom, and she was like, ‘That sucks. Now I can’t post the pictures,’ and I was like, ‘Right, mom, me being cut out of the movie that has like the largest viewership of a trailer ever, the issue is you can’t post your BTS photos,’” Dawson joked, according to The Wrap. “When I tell you my post was already ready with my BTS, with like my grandson wearing all his Spider-Man stuff because he loves Spider-Man — then I got …

Spider-Man Stays Top at China Box Office as The Odyssey Storms Previews

Spider-Man Stays Top at China Box Office as The Odyssey Storms Previews

Spider-Man: Brand New Day held its grip atop China‘s box office for a second weekend, pulling in $28.9 million (RMB 196.6 million) over the Aug. 7-9 frame for a local total of $185.4 million (RMB 1.26 billion) in 12 days.  The Sony tentpole launched in China with a massive $121.3 million five-day haul, of which $19 million came from Imax, a record for the format in the market. The film is now days away from surpassing the $199 million earned by 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the last U.S. superhero release to clear $100 million in China. But it was Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which doesn’t officially open in Chinese theaters until Friday, that arguably delivered the weekend’s most surprising number. Playing Saturday and Sunday only, and exclusively on Imax and CINITY screens, Universal’s adaptation of the Greek classic took $6.9 million (RMB 46.8 million) in previews — enough for fifth place and roughly 7 percent of the entire weekend’s business from a tiny sliver of the nation’s screens. Earlier four-city previews on Aug. 1-2 …

Zendaya’s Best Red-Carpet Looks From Her ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Press Tour

Zendaya’s Best Red-Carpet Looks From Her ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Press Tour

After legendary promotional tours for Dune, Challengers, The Drama, and The Odyssey, it was hard to imagine how Zendaya could top herself at her next premiere. The Euphoria star swung from ancient Greece and straight into the Marvel universe for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and that hard work has paid off, as that movie has made a jaw-dropping $1.67 billion globally, as of this writing. Can we credit some of those ticket sales to her spider-themed red carpet looks, expertly assembled by image architect Law Roach? How can we not? The duo’s secret can be summed up in two words: method dressing, that is, the narrative art of tailoring one’s appearances to the project or role at hand. Zendaya and Roach are widely credited with popularizing this approach, leveraging the well-established power of clothing as a tool for communication. When it comes to method dressing, the 29-year-old newlywed—a fashion icon perched on her high heels—makes masterful use of that tool. For the promotional tour for Spider-Man’s latest adventure, Roach juggled archives from major fashion houses, …

‘Spider-Man’ Star Sadie Sink on Playing X-Men’s Jean Grey

‘Spider-Man’ Star Sadie Sink on Playing X-Men’s Jean Grey

Joining Marvel can be a yearslong commitment. Did you have to pause and think about if you wanted to be committed for that long? Of course, with anything you do have to stop and consider. For me, it felt like a character that would have a lot to offer over however many times we see her. And also the idea of returning to something or having a consistent character that you’re playing is something I’m also familiar with. I like that structure. So it felt like a no-brainer to me. It’s a great character to spend some time with. You’ve been on a show that had a lot of passionate fans with strong opinions. Does this feel different? With Stranger Things, Max didn’t exist before me. So what fans are seeing of her, it’s all fresh and you don’t know what’s going to happen to her next. But with a character like Jean Grey, who’s been around for much, much longer, there’s so many stories to pull from, so many iterations of her. She means …

Tom Holland Doesn't Hold Back When It Comes To How Bad His Spider-Man Suit 'Smells'

Tom Holland Doesn't Hold Back When It Comes To How Bad His Spider-Man Suit 'Smells'

Tom Holland on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day Tom Holland is getting candid about the unglamorous truths of playing Spider-Man. In the run-up to the latest film’s release, the stars of the billion-dollar-makingSpider-Man: Brand New Day sat down with IMDb to answer burning questions about the film. Asked about the reality of wearing that Spidey suit for 12 hours a day, Tom happily confessed: “The worst thing is definitely the smell.” “You know, like, I’m not going to shy away from it,” he laughed. “You spend 12 hours in that thing in a deep lunge, jumping up and down all day.” He went on to praise the movie’s costume department, and revealed he had sat down with them and Brand New Day’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, to speak about all the things they loved about previous Spider-Man suits. “We did a really interesting exercise when we were in pre-production, where I tried on Tobey [Maguire]’s suit, I tried on Andrew [Garfield]’s suit, and I tried on my original suits,” Tom explained. Tom added …
