How to Spot Greenwashing Claims When You Travel

How to Spot Greenwashing Claims When You Travel

Finding legitimately eco-friendly travel options is difficult, not to mention time-consuming. The gap between sustainability claims and practices can be quite large, and greenwashing isn’t always easy to identify. But there are signs to look for. Researchers in Turkey recently identified five key categories to describe the most common forms of tourism-related greenwashing: eco-certifications, inadequate waste management, misleading carbon offsetting claims, destination-based overconsumption, and the use of the “green development” label to mask social injustice and environmental harm. “Businesses facing demands for environmental and social responsibility frequently engage in gestures that are largely for show,” the authors wrote in a paper published in May in the journal Frontiers in Sustainability. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned, the paper makes clear, but there are also ways to cut through the noise. Independent and robust certification systems play a huge role; local businesses are also important, since corporate chains are often associated with problematic greenwashing, particularly at the luxury level. “Sustainability must not be viewed as a communication strategy but as a structural commitment that …

'Sad Irony' To Trump's Current Tough Spot Amid Iran Negotiations, Ex-US Ambassador Warns

'Sad Irony' To Trump's Current Tough Spot Amid Iran Negotiations, Ex-US Ambassador Warns

President Donald Trump is desperate to end the Iran war. There is a “sad irony” to Donald Trump’s current predicament with Iran, according to a former US ambassador. Iran effectively closed the major oil shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, earlier this year in response to the US and Israeli strikes on Tehran in February. That blockade has caused a global economic shock as oil tankers are bottlenecked around the waterway. The White House is subsequently under immense pressure find a solution to the war it started so business as usual can resume. A former US vice-president JD Vance claimed overnight that Washington and Tehran are “very close” to agreeing an extension of their ceasefire, though a deal is “not there yet”. American officials have suggested the two countries have agreed to a framework for a deal, but they are yet to get the stamp of approval from Trump and Iran’s leaders. David Satterfield served as the US special envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues under the Biden administration and as an ambassador to Turkey …

Chickenpox, Impetigo Or Hand, Foot And Mouth: How To Spot Difference

Chickenpox, Impetigo Or Hand, Foot And Mouth: How To Spot Difference

This article features expert advice from Dr Bisola Laguda, a paediatric dermatologist and spokesperson for the Skin Health Alliance. With kids now getting extra protection against chickenpox as part of their routine childhood immunisations, it’s hoped fewer kids will end up struggling with the worst effects of the illness. That said, kids might still catch it – albeit a milder version – and those who aren’t vaccinated against it (either because they’re too young or their parents opted out) will also be at risk. But spotting chickenpox can be tricky, especially as the telltale sign is a rash – and other childhood illnesses like impetigo and hand, foot and mouth can look pretty similar. To try and get some clarity on how to tell it apart from other illnesses, which is important so you know how to treat it (and how long they’ll need off school or childcare), we spoke to Dr Bisola Laguda, a paediatric dermatologist and spokesperson for the Skin Health Alliance. What are the signs of chickenpox parents need to know? Chickenpox …

Stephen Colbert’s public access spot sparks CBS copyright fray

Stephen Colbert’s public access spot sparks CBS copyright fray

Stephen Colbert’s viral public access spot had former bosses CBS and its parent company Paramount in a brief tizzy over the weekend, mere hours after his buzzy late-night sign-off. The longtime TV personality, 62, returned to the air on Friday evening on “Only in Monroe,” a public access program in Monroe, Mich., with an hour-long late-night parody episode that featured several guests and took shots at Paramount’s monopolistic aspirations in media. Colbert, previously a one-time host of “Only in Monroe,” began his episode: “It’s been an excruciating 23 hours without being on TV, so I am grateful to be able to be here on Monroe Community before they also get acquired by Paramount.” The “Only in Monroe” episode was broadcast in southeast Michigan, the Associated Press reported, and also published to Colbert’s official YouTube page. News of Colbert’s surprise late-night spot spread online, with social media users reposting the episode in its entirety or sharing clips. Journalist and the Desk founder Matthew Keys shared the episode to his X (formerly Twitter) page, tweeting on Sunday …

The French far right’s weak spot: Economic incoherence – POLITICO

The French far right’s weak spot: Economic incoherence – POLITICO

While Bardella has enjoyed success courting the titans of industry — especially those executives belonging to CAC40, the index of France’s largest listed companies — Le Pen’s more recent attempts at engagement with business have been rockier. Politicians from rival parties are wasting no time in seeking to score points from the ideological schism at the heart of the nationalist, anti-immigration National Rally. “There’s the new generation National Rally that’s courting CAC40 executives, companies and business leaders … and the old guard that is pro-spending, pro-nanny state,” Édouard Philippe, the conservative main challenger to the far right, said this month. “You can count on me to condemn their posturing and U-turns.” Éric Zemmour, leader of the far-right Reconquest party, accused Bardella of going to “great lengths” to make it look as if the National Rally were right-wing while the party hierarchy — most notably Le Pen — had leftist economic instincts and wanted to hike taxes. Noting the divisions between Bardella and Le Pen, members of the far-left France Unbowed party said their presidential candidate …

Huge blaze breaks out at Edinburgh beauty spot as smoke seen for miles | UK | News

A massive blaze has broken out at one of Edinburgh’s most beloved beauty spots. Smoke was visible from as far afield as Fife on Monday evening after the fire ignited on Arthur’s Seat. Photographs of the inferno show fierce orange flames engulfing the gorse on the hillside of the Scottish capital’s iconic landmark, as walkers pause their hike to witness the devastation. A firefighter can be seen ascending the hill towards the blaze. One Edinburgh resident happened to be across in Fife when they caught sight of thick black smoke billowing from the area. They said: “My friend and I were climbing in Fife when we noticed a plume of smoke coming from Holyrood park. “We’re miles away but you can see it clear as day. There’s a lot of smoke rising from the area. “I hope it’s not as bad as the fire from last year and that everyone is safe.” A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at an incident on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. “Operations Control has …

Americans can’t spot a deepfake, and that’s a business crisis, not just a consumer problem

Americans can’t spot a deepfake, and that’s a business crisis, not just a consumer problem

Presented by Veriff Americans can’t reliably distinguish real from AI-generated content, and that’s not just a media literacy problem; it’s a direct threat to how businesses verify identity online. New research finds that while many people are aware of deepfakes, their ability to distinguish them from reality is barely better than a coin flip. A 2026 survey conducted by Veriff and Kantar among 3,000 respondents in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Brazil shows Americans scoring just 0.07 on a scale where 0 represents random guessing. If people can’t distinguish authentic visual content, they can’t reliably distinguish authentic identities. In practice, that means the same users interacting with digital services are often unable to tell whether the person on the other side of a screen is real. That ineffectiveness has direct consequences for every digital business that relies on image- and video-based identity verification to confirm who is on the other side of a screen. That includes everything from customer bank onboarding and account recovery to marketplace seller verification, high-value ecommerce transactions, social platform …
