Smart business leaders focus on value creation instead. They help professionals find new avenues to growth.  Defaulting to AI-enabled layoffs is often seen as a shortcut to cost-cutting. Specialist site jobloss.ai, which tracks AI-enabled layoffs, reported that 126,000 US employees lost their jobs between January 2025 and June 2026 due to AI-related factors. Ankur Anand, group CIO at recruiter Harvey Nash, told ZDNET it’s easy to see why many executives regard AI deployment as a pathway to cost-cutting. Also: ‘Specialists aren’t required’ anymore: How to stay valuable in an AI agent workplace today “Early messages from vendors, consultants, and even some boards have focused on productivity, automation, and doing more with less,” he said. “Headlines about AI‑related layoffs reinforce the idea that the fastest route to value is through fewer people.” This default position paints a grim picture for professionals anxious about AI-enabled job cuts. Businesses regret job-cut decisions However, …

AI automation startup Relay shuts down, staff joins Google’s Chrome team

Relay, an AI-powered workflow automation tool that was launched in 2021 with the goal of becoming the new Zapier, is shutting down, and some of its staff — including its top executive — are joining Google’s Chrome team. Jacob Bank, Relay’s founder and CEO, shared a company announcement Monday that reveals the app will be shutting down access for paying customers on September 14. Free customers would have already lost access as of August 15. The app’s closure was initially announced in July. Bank, who previously spent a little over six years at Google, revealed that he would now be rejoining the tech giant as VP of Product for Google Chrome, where he will lead the product and developer relations teams for Chrome, according to his LinkedIn. “I’ve spent my whole career doing one thing: building tools that help people get more done with AI, without sacrificing their personal creativity or insights,” said Bank in a post on X. “And joining the Chrome team is an ideal opportunity to bring those experiences to many, many …

Having Peter Pan on Staff Isn’t All Bad

Having Peter Pan on Staff Isn’t All Bad

In my recent book, The Future Begins With Z, I write about leading Generation Z in the workplace. They’re so different from older generations that they often present a challenge to their managers. I just wonder—what if our greatest challenge could become our greatest solution to future challenges? I describe Gen Z teammates this way. Their population represents the “Peter Pan Paradox.” Do you remember Peter Pan? He soared into London (something no one else could do), sprinkled pixie dust over everything, and made magic happen. In short, he brought unique gifts with him. At the same time, Peter Pan wanted to stay in Neverland, where kids never have to grow up. This simple analogy describes a new reality at work: The age of authority is decreasing. Young people enter their careers with some magic, armed with intuition, a vision of the future, and a sense of where culture is going. The age of maturity is increasing. Young people seem to be taking longer to mature socially and emotionally, and often have no professional experience …

What do cybersecurity leaders want in staff? These 3 skills beat certifications and experience

Talented professionals will question almost everything. Work with agents to make decisions that reduce risks. Working in cybersecurity is a tough gig. While security teams work hard to prevent damage to their organizations, ZDNET reported earlier this year that many cyber professionals aren’t receiving the recognition they deserve Emerging technology brings new challenges. AI-assisted vulnerability discovery is accelerating the pace of bug reports, with a growing mismatch between what machines can surface and what humans can realistically triage. Also: AI failed to patch software flaws 74% of the time, 1Password’s study warns In such a fast-changing and challenging working environment, it’s easy to understand why almost half of cybersecurity pros want to quit. However, staff should pause before sending their resignation letters: in an age of AI, where threats come from multiple angles, your business needs you now more than ever. As Fabrizio Pilotti, CIO at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One, said to ZDNET recently, digital leaders …

Patients refusing to be treated by non-white staff as NHS reports shocking rise in racism | UK News

NHS staff have been called “dirty foreigners” and “monkeys” amid a “noticeable” and “unacceptable” rise in racism from patients, a survey has found. The Society of Radiographers (SoR) said the trend over the past 18 months is a “poor reflection” on society and described the behaviour as “unconscionable”. Some have even been refused to be treated by non-white staff, a poll of its members revealed. A sonographer in the Midlands, of Asian descent, said several patients have said to her: “This country isn’t the same, with all those people coming over here, taking our jobs.” She said such incidents had become “more prevalent”, blaming “the media and certain political parties” where people “are openly expressing” such views. Paul Awah, a Bedfordshire-based diagnostic radiographer originally from Nigeria, added: “It’s definitely got worse – people are more expressive now. “What used to be something people wouldn’t say – now the rhetoric has changed.” Mr Awah also claimed he had experienced patients telling him they cannot understand him, even though English is the only language he speaks. Other …

Inland Empire’s KCAL FM laid off entire on-air radio staff

Over the weekend, Redlands-based radio station KCAL-FM 96.7 started playing music without any on-air staff, after laying off all of its personalities last week and transitioning into an “All Music, All the Time” classic rock format. “96.7 KCAL Rocks is turning the page today. Thank you to every listener who made the last chapter what it was,” the station’s staff wrote on social media. “Classic rock. Nothing but music. All day across the Inland Empire.” The station’s veteran radio hosts, part-timers and weekend fill-ins all were cut loose, including Daryl Norsell, who said he worked at the station for 42 years; Patrick Tish, who said he worked there for 15 years, and Nikki Preston. John DeSantis, the evening host and program director for the last six years, confirmed the layoffs on social media. “They will be moving to an automated, human-less format. To say this is shocking is an understatement. I have a lot to process, and will be saying more shortly,” DeSantis wrote. “But for right now, I just want to thank all of …

Killed in Iranian missile attack, Staff Sgt. Rampersad laid to rest : NPR

The casket of Staff Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, who was killed in the ongoing war between the U.S. and Iran, is carried by NYPD officers during the funeral procession in New York on Friday, July 31. Ryan Murphy/AP hide caption toggle caption Ryan Murphy/AP NEW YORK — When Carolina Flores saw two men in military uniforms approach her friend’s house across the street, she had a feeling something was wrong. Her friend Carol Acevedo’s daughter was serving in the Middle East. “Once they closed the door, we just heard her screaming,” Flores said. The men had come to deliver the news that 28-year-old Angel S. Rampersad, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, was killed July 17 in an attack on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. She was one of four American soldiers killed overseas in the last month. And just like that, a faraway war hit home in Ozone Park, Queens. It’s one of the most diverse places in the country. At a vigil for Rampersad Monday, dozens of neighbors from countries …

Politics Home | MPs’ Staff Report Record Levels Of Psychological Distress From Their Jobs

6 min read15 min A majority of MPs’ staff are experiencing psychological distress as a result of their work, according to a new survey of employees working in Parliament and constituency offices. An annual survey carried out by the MPs’ staff Wellness Working Group, shared with PoliticsHome, has shown a record level of distress experienced by MPs’ staff since the survey began in 2000. From a record 627 staff responses, the survey found that 50.9 per cent of MPs’ staff working across both Parliament and constituency offices are experiencing psychological distress. This is the highest level recorded to date, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sixty-four per cent of respondents also reported difficulty meeting the demands of the job within expected timescales and 34 per cent said their working hours negatively affect their family relationships and friendships. The survey found MPs’ staff reporting a ‘tsunami’ of casework, with offices struggling to cope with constituents’ increasingly complex demands. Constituency caseworkers are also exposed to an increasing level of abuse, threats, traumatic disclosures and suicide-related casework. …
